Work Text:
It was a beautiful day, all things considered. The weather was warm and despite the overcast of clouds, the sun peaking through was shining in through the windows casting beams over the open books beside the register. It felt like a nice tease of the day outside on the hand that smoothed out the pages as they turned. Yes, it was a beautiful day.
Except it was too damn quiet!
Two hours, forty three minutes and twelve seconds since another living soul had entered the quiet shop. Izuku didn't understand it. Usually they were busy around this time of day, even on rainy days they still had a handful of regulars walking through the door to browse the shelves or seek out Kaminari for advice. Was everyone in town busy today? Was the good weather somehow keeping them all away?
Izuku closed his book with a sigh. Well at least the slow day meant that Kaminari could get inventory done faster with less distractions. Izuku just really wanted someone to talk to. He was never good at staying quiet for too long and books could only prove company for as long as his focus held out. Especially when it is his fifth time reading through this particular volume.
He huffed as he stretched his arms over his head as he leaned back in his chair. What he wouldn't give to be in his study right now. He as working on a new spell and was dying to try it out but had to wait for his shift to be over otherwise risking Kaminari finding out. Not that he wouldn't want Kaminari to find out but then he'd start to worry if Kami finding out would cause their relationship to change. Would he still want to be friends if he knew Izuku was a witch? Would he still be allowed to work in the shop? Gasp Would he have to move his study?!
“Meow!”
Izuku looked up at the sound of the noise, seeing the tabby cat's green eyes staring down at him from up on the top of the shelf behind him. “Hey... How'd you get all the way up there?” The cat almost seemed to smirk, giving him a mischievous look as it lowered itself into a pouncing stance. Izuku's eyes widened as he knew what was coming. “No no! Don't you dare.. No!” The cat promptly ignored his cries as it dropped down. “WAIT!” Izuku flailed attempting to catch the cat as it fell down, bouncing off his head to land on the counter, almost smirking as the motions caused Izuku to fall into the shelf, causing it to wobble before falling over on the ground. “Ow... Why'd you do that huh?!”
Bonk, woosh, CRASH!
Izuku froze, Kaminari's words filling his ears. 'Remember to be careful not to knock into this bookcase Midoriya. It's not stable. Accidents happen but lets avoid breaking my family heirlooms yeah?' He sat frozen, staring at the mess of broken glass and debris. A cold sweat slid down the back of his neck as in a panic he looked to the inside of the shop expecting to see Kaminari's angry face coming around the corner any second.
Five seconds passed. Fifteen. Sixty two. He let out the breath that he'd been holding. Kaminari didn't hear the noise. Standing up, brushing himself up he glared down at the cat just nonchalantly grooming itself on top of Izuku's closed book. “This is your fault you know! Ugg.... What am I going to do...?” The cat side eyed him, a look that said 'You're an idiot' before jumping off the counter and disappearing inside the shop.
“Okay... It's Okay... You can fix this...” He quickly glanced at the door, counting to ten to calm his nerves. No one was coming in. “Okay, Okay, you got this. Just a simple fix it spell. You've done it plenty of times. Just... Deep breaths... And.. Focus...” He let his voice trail off as his breathing leveled out. His emerald eyes took on a soft green glow as he held out his hand, palm up and mumbled out the short incantation. Slowly, a green mist flowed out of his outstretched palm, skirting down to the floor, slowly enveloping the broken pieces scattered around. Once enveloped, the green mist pulled back bringing the pieces with it as they gathered together in his palm, mending themselves as they came together.
The pieces were nearly complete when a voice came from around the corner.
“Hey Midoriya. Do you know what that noise was a minute ago.... Oh.”
Izuku blinked, the glow receding from his eyes as he lost concentration.“Denki!” He pulled his hand away like he had been burned from the recoil as he watched the object once again fall and crash to the ground. “Umm... I can explain!! You see the cat jumped and I fell and it fell.. And I was fixing it... You saw... You saw... I mean... Fuck...”
Kaminari quirked an eyebrow up at Midoriya's ramblings. Gosh it was cute. Holding back a laugh he walked over to the panicking boy. “Chill man, it's alright. I really don't care if you wanna practice.” He knelt down, waving his hand over the object as it pieced itself back together under his palm. “Just do me a favour and maybe don't do it during shop hours. Don't want any no-mags walking in on yah.” He picked it up handing it to Midoriya, secretly enjoying the look of confusion and shock invading the boy's features.
“I... umm.. You... ahh...” Izuku held the object carefully. What was happening? Kaminari was... Did he just? He wanted to comment but he couldn't form the words. He just stood there, watching Kaminari smirk as he turned around to go back to finishing inventory.
“Oh!” He stopped before rounding the corner, glancing back over his shoulder. “I am going to be placing a new book order soon. Let me know if there is anything you need and I'll add it to the order.” All Izuku could do was nod his head. “Perfect!” Smiling he turned back to his clipboard and rounded the corner disappearing from Izuku's sight.
With shaking legs, Izuku put the item back on the shelf, trying his best to not full out panic. What just happened?!
“Oh Midoriya.” He jumped as he looked over as Kaminari poked his head back around the corner. “I've known the entire time. You're not that good at hiding it ya know.”
Once again Kaminari disappeared around the corner leaving Izuku alone in the front of the store. Feeling his legs wanting to give out he slowly slid down to the floor, leaning against the bookshelf. “Did that just....”
The bell on the store door rang as woman with dark purple hair entered, yawning as she looked around. She quirked a brow as she didn't see anyone right away as she approached the counter. “Hello?”
“Down here..”
She looked down. “Oh hey Midoriya! What are you doing on the floor?”
All he could do was let out a whimper as he felt his soul leave his body. Kaminari saw Izuku do magick. Kaminari knew Izuku could use magick. KAMINARI COULD DO MAGICK.
WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON?!
Side Story End.
