Taylor frowned. It was just an average tavern as far as he could tell.

“Are you sure this is the place, Cage?”

“Unfortunately, yes,” Cage sighed, leaning against Taylor’s chair as she continued. “The Death God is insisting that there’s something or someone here that can grant wishes.”

“Huh, and he did mention anything else?”

“You know he didn’t. That’d be too reliable or ‘ruin the surprise’.” Cage rolled her eyes.

She continued. “You know, there’s no point in overthinking it now. We might as well go in and wait for our ‘fateful encounter’ with a drink or two.”

Taylor partially turned his head to her. “Is that how he said it?”

“Eh, more or less.”

Taylor’s brow quirked at that response. Now he can’t help but wonder just how much Cage leaves out when she relays the god’s Will.

“Whatever, let’s go see what kind of goose hunt we were led on this time. Hup!” Cage kicked the brake off Taylor’s chair and pushed him along to the entrance.

Upon entering the tavern, they were hit with a smoky scent. Despite the fact that they had travelled all over in their quest to heal Taylor, they knew that they wouldn't be able to pinpoint it perfectly.

Cage could swear up and down that it smelled like apples and wheat, but Taylor only shook his head and insisted it was jasmine and morning rain.

"To me," a mysterious third voice interrupted their debate. "It smells like honey and lilacs."

They turned to see the new addition and saw what appeared to be your average bar maiden, a hand on her hip and a sparkle in her eye as she observed them.

"Welcome to my fine establishment," she greeted them and the two ceased their bickering to return it.

"What exactly is it, then?" Cage pushed.

"Hmmm," the owner tapped her temple thoughtfully as she pretended to consider telling her. "That's for me to know and you to wonder."

She laughed at Cage's displeased expression and continued. "Why would I want to spoil the surprise for you? That's what I am all about, finding your own answers."

Taylor and Cage exchanged confused looks at her odd choice of words.

She's a total weirdo, Cage thought to herself.

The other woman hummed again as she watched them do so. Waving a hand in the general direction of the dining area, the woman left them while saying, "find yourselves a spot, and I'll send someone over to you shortly."

Despite being mildly put off by the odd woman, Taylor and Cage did as she said.

There had to be reason why they were here, Cage reasoned with herself again. We wouldn't really be sent on a wild goose chase.

Right?
