Work Text:

ah, sunday evenings.

they might be dazai’s favourite thing in the world- the events of the week blocked out by candles and blankets, sometimes even warmed by homemade, warm meals. a full week ahead sometimes felt suffocating, the anxiety settling in as he knew this warmth would be ripped away from him with work in the morning.

but for now his head fell into the crook of a shoulder on the couch, like a diamond split open becoming whole again. his hand intertwined with soft and dainty fingers under the blanket, eyes glazing over the book the other was resting in his lap.

chuuya smiled softly, his head resting on top of dazai’s maroon mop.

that’s the way things were. no words were needed, just gentle touches and soft kisses were enough to communicate the warmth they felt in their souls.

words may not be needed, but they were comforting when spoken. if a random thought popped into either of their heads, they wouldn’t be scared to blurt it out. which lead to some interesting conversations- from chuuya asking what to have for dinner tomorrow, to dazai asking if they can adopt a panda.

sunday evenings were so precious to dazai. he adored the peace, the soft lighting, having chuuya so close to him.

he wished they lasted forever.

but nothing good lasts forever, does it?

from where he lay on chuuya, he felt something absurd emerge from the smaller boy.

a rumbling. a ripple from his tummy. it sounded like the wild beast of arahabaki being unleashed, swallowing him whole and escaping through his teeth.

dazai pulled away from him, his face scrunched up in horror.

“corruption?!”

chuuya exhaled heavily, the mist of his breath smelling like their dinner. “wow, thanks. that’s really kind of you, mackerel.”

dazai continued to stare.

“i just burped. you know i’m not good with spicy things.”

he clocked it. “ah. i see.”

“get back here.” chuuya chuckled under his breath, vibrating through the entire couch.

dazai swooned, practically diving back into chuuya’s arms.

the peacefulness of the two returned, enveloping dazai fully as chuuya began playing with his loose strands of hair, scratching at his scalp every now and again.

dazai hummed, nuzzling closer. god, he loved chuuya. he loved chuuya with his entire being.

“you like tha- hic!”

dazai froze.

chuuya froze.

yokohama froze.

“da- hic!- zai-

dazai lifted his head once more, coming face to face with chuuya’s strawberry cheeks and wide eyes, looking surprised at his own body.

they didn’t dare move. dazai refused to break eye contact.

after a while, there it was again- a pulse out of chuuya’s chest, squeaky like a dog toy.

dazai’s heart, his stern face, his everything, melted

into the most pathetic puddle of romance and sap.

to think the strongest mafioso in yokohama could make such adorable noises? replicating the noise of elise’s dolls?

chuuya was beyond adorable- and his hiccups just added to the ‘dazai swooning’ factor.

unsure of how to deal with these feelings, he plastered his head on chuuya’s chest.

the poor boy tried his best to wiggle free, “what are you-“

“do it again.” dazai stated.

he could tell chuuya was scowling by his breath.

“i can’t control when i hiccup.”

“then i’ll stay here until you do it again.”

chuuya sucked in a breath but surrendered, relaxing back into the couch cushions.

they waited. and waited. then waited some more, like zookeepers waiting for an animal to pounce.

except the animal was a tiny puppy. chuuya’s tummy lifted again, his lips slightly apart as the smallest hic! escaped, rippling through his entire body for such a tiny peep.

dazai couldn't hold back a grin if he tried.

“chibi!” he rejoiced, wrapping his arms around chuuya’s waist and pressing sloppy kisses onto his cheeks.

chuuya, on the other hand, looked like an angry bubble.

“what’s so funny?” he pouted, making dazai want to kiss his baby cheeks even more.

“it's just i’ve never heard you hiccup before!” he tapped his nose, “they match your personality. small and adorable!”

“if you don’t- hic!- shut up in the next three seconds…”

“okay.”

dazai kept his head on chuuya’s chest, looking up at him with eyes full of stars. his hand began rubbing circles on chuuya’s exposed tummy with fingertips as gentle as a baby animal.

chuuya looked baffled at his lover, but let his eyes and mind soften at dazai’s excitement.

love was always a scary concept to him. but watching dazai explore every part of him, even the parts he hates the most (like his unicorn hiccups) made his heart glow pure gold.

“hic!”

he tried to stifle it, but it was no use.

dazai giggled, tapping his abs.

“that one sounded like a pokémon!”

chuuya burst into giggles at that, before letting out another ‘hic!’ followed by what sounded like a mouse squeak. as embarrassment took over, he stayed quiet.

dazai looked up at him again, giving a look of ‘what’s wrong?’

words were never needed.

“i fucking hate hiccups.”

“hiccups in general, or your hiccups?” dazai asked, finding chuuya’s hand and planting a kiss in his palm.

“both.”

another chaste kiss, followed by a “well, i love your hiccups.”

chuuya didn’t know what to say.

it turns out, he didn’t have to say anything. his body spoke for him, with another ‘hic!’

dazai’s whole face smiled, wriggling closer to him so they could bump noses, chuuya scrunching up and chuckling.

dazai looked like he was soaking every ounce of chuuya’s happiness in, which made him giggle even more.

“see?” he brushed his nose against chuuya’s smaller one, “they’re adorable. you’re adorable, chibi.”

chuuya got lost in dazai’s soft eyes, swimming in hot chocolate pools before he noticed dazai leaning in.

oh no.

why now?!

he squished his palm into dazai’s forehead.

the other backed up, taking a moment to process before humming in confusion.

chuuya gave him a death stare.

“if we kiss, i might hiccup in your mouth.”

dazai snorted so loud, and for so long, he might as well be a pig.

“i don’t want that. i don’t want you to give me your old, wooden door sounding hiccups.”

“so your hiccups must be very manly, then?” chuuya teased.

“obviously.” he chuckled warmly, “now, you’re being far too adorable. please, just one kiss?”

the over-the-top kissy noises were too much for chuuya to handle. he leaned in, granting dazai the dantiest little peck.

hic!”

YOU-“

-

from that day forward, dazai fell in love with chuuya’s hiccups. in fact, he fell in love with chuuya as a whole a little bit more- which he didn’t think was possible.

chuuya was so easy to love.

apart from when they decided to have indian food right before bed, making chuuya gassy and squeaky all night long.

apart from when this caused dazai to sleep on the sofa, which only lasted a few minutes anyway. he couldn’t bare to sleep without his chibi in his arms, so he resorted to earplugs.

which hurt. a lot.

but, alas, the pig and the unicorn lived happily ever after.
