Chapter Text
When Mayumi first woke up, it was slow and painful. Everything was hurting, there was an awfully loud beeping sound and it was so dark. Awareness wasn't there for her first awakening, too. It was confusing and she let out a strangled groan while making out a little bit of sound- voices? She didn't know, and then she was out again, grateful for being unconscious again.
The next time she woke up it was way more painful but she could think a little, and there was light. Way too bright and it hurt her eyes, so she didn't let them open for very long, instead just trying to listen to her surroundings. And then she could hear those sounds again, the voices, the beeping. They were close, and she had a strong feeling telling her to answer them, a pull in her heart that made her try to say something. But she couldn't because her voice wouldn't come out and her throat was hurting and it was difficult to breathe and- there it was, the darkness of sleep coming to her again. The annoying beeping sound was frantic and the voices were calming to her foggy brain, so she told herself she would answer them next time. Now she just wanted to sleep and don't feel pain.
And then she woke up with way less pain. She could feel that where she was was different from the other times. Less could and more comfortable. The beeping sound was still there, sure, but she could feel that her throat wasn't hurting and that she could breathe . She opened only one eye, trying to be sure that the lights wouldn't hurt her, and when she was sure that it wasn't too bright, slowly blinked both of them a few times, tentatively. A sigh escaped her when she felt no pain and she looked around her. There was a bed, that's where she was. Then a window on her right side, and by the little crack in the curtain, she could see the sky was slowly fading into a purplish color. There was a sofa and- was it someone sleeping there? There were two little forms on the sofa, but she couldn't see who those forms were. Debating if she wanted to try and sit and go see who was there or try and say something to get their attention, she heard the door opening on the other side of the room. She looked in that direction and could feel a big smile on her lips. It was mommy!
"Mom?" Her voice was rough, it hurt to speak, but her mom was by her side in an instant.
"Oh, honey! You're awake!" there were tears in her eyes, and the little girl could see that she was relieved to see her awake "There, the nurse will be here any moment now. How are you, baby?"
"I'm fine" she whispered, trying to make it hurt a little bit less to speak "who's there?" the girl asked, pointing to the couch.
"Oh! They wouldn't leave you, can you believe it? These boys drove all of us insane! They would cry and scream and they even got sick when we forced them to sleep at their homes. It was easier to just compromise and let them sleep here so they would go to school." A soft chuckle, and then another person was going through her door.
"How are you feeling?" the nurse asked while a lot of more lights came directly into her face, making her shut her eyes instinctively.
"I'm fine" the girl repeated, trying to shield her eyes from the lights so she could open them "light hurts"
"I know honey, but don't worry. it will be only a few minutes ok? I just need to check your vitals." and then she was on the little girl, poking her with a thermometer and messing with the machine that was making that annoying beeping sound.
"Auntie?" another voice, a tiny voice, asked from the sofa, and the girl smiled when she recognized it.
"Zuku??" the girl said a lot louder than the other times she spoke that night, feeling happiness bubble up in her chest... If Zuku was here, Kacchan would be too!
"Miichan!" his green eyes were wide, almost sparkling with happiness when he saw that she was awake and in an almost sitting position "Kacchan, wake up!" he then was shaking the boy at his side, excitement in his little face.
"What?" he groaned, rubbing his eyes "what happened?"
"Miichan is awake!" the excitement was clear in the voice of the green eyed boy, who was now trying, and failing, to get out of the bundle of blankets.
In the haste of trying to get out of the couch, out of the blankets, both boys ended up on the floor at the same time that the nurse, with a little smile on her face, was leaving the room. The happy sounds that left the little girl while watching both her best friends trying to get to her was a relief for her mother, who was sitting in a nearby chair, texting something on her phone.
When they both got to their feet and scrambled to the bed, getting up and positioning themselves at both the girl's sides, making a protective barrier against everything, she felt something strange on her back.
"Wha-" she began to ask only to stop herself, looking at the wings on her back "I have wings?"
"Your quirk is so cool Miichan!" the green-eyed boy exclaimed, "Your wings are so cool!"
"Sucks that you are in the hospital because of them" the blond boy grunted, putting one arm around her waist and hugging her closer "if you had to go through that again I would prefer you to be quirkless."
"Kacchan!" the other boy chastised while hugging her by the waist too "that's not nice, Kacchan!"
"What do you mean?" she looked at her blond friend, confused "What happened?"
"You don't remember?" his eyes got a little bigger at this "You screamed and cried and fell from the bridge."
"Yeah, it was scary." the green-eyed boy's voice was small "Kacchan jumped after you and I ran down. You were screaming so much, Miichan!" his eyes were glossed by the tears coming down his cheeks.
"I held you while Zuku went get our moms" the blond boy continued, voice getting a little bit darker "You couldn't tell me what was wrong and I thought you were dying."
"I'm sorry" she could feel her eyes getting wet, the tears threatening to escape her eyes.
"What for?" the blond boy asked, eyes narrowing in her direction "You did nothing wrong, Yumi."
"I'm sorry I scared you" she looked down on her hands, tears going down her cheeks "I don't even remember it!"
"It's okay, Miichan! We're happy to be with you!" Zuku said, and then with a really big smile added "Let's make a promise, then!"
"What kind of promise?" the blond boy was looking at him, feeling suspicious, narrowing his too bright red eyes.
"That we will always be together, the three of us! We will be heroes together, and then when we grow up we will marry and live together! That way we can always protect each other and don't have to leave if we get hurt!" his green eyes sparkled with hope, smiling at his two best friends.
"tch," the blond boy looked away "I don't need protection, Zuku."
"I like this promise, Izucchan!" the girl was almost shining with how big her smile was "promise with us, Kacchan! please!" she looked at him with her too bright blue eyes and he couldn't deny her - not that he was planning to deny that promise in the first place.
"Yeah, sure. I promise to be always with you two and protect your nerd asses" he smirked at them, feeling great to promise to protect the two people who meant everything to him.
"Kacchan! that's not nice!" Zuku chastised, but then added with a smile "I promise to always be with you guys and protect you too!"
"I promise to get stronger, then." the girl with blue eyes and white silvery hair said "To protect you two too. I don't want to be a burden... and I will always be with you!"
Happy with their promise, the three kids hugged each other and fell asleep. The new wings of the little girl, a beautiful blue, the same color as her eyes, resting protectively around them. They didn't know what that promise would mean for them after waking up, not knowing what exactly her quirk was yet. But for now, sleep was all they needed. The consequences of that innocent promise could wait.
