Malignancy

Summary:

“Look Midoriya, we weren’t trying to...do any of that. We just trusted Aizawa-sensei judgement, after all he is a pro.”

“Of course and you couldn’t trust me right?” I scoffed.

It stung more than it should.

Chapter Text

I awoke to my alarm blaring loudly in my ears. I was exhausted despite not having any classes for the previous two days. Who knew scheming and plotting would be so energy consuming?

I lay in bed for a few moments, savouring the warmth of sheets before finally pulling myself up and out of it. I blinked the last of the sleep out of my eyes and steeled my nerves.

I swiped to open my phone, and squinted hard against the harsh light of the screen. I wasn’t shocked to see several dozen missed calls from my various classmates. I ignored those and checked my messages.

Uraraka : r u ok? didnt see you after tuesday

Uraraka : deku? i hope ur ok

Todoroki : Are you okay? You didn’t come in yesterday.

Todoroki : Did something happen?

Todoroki : Midoriya?

Tsuyu : sensei tells us youre alright but I know you’re not, please talk to us

Several other texts were sent in a similar format, filled with anxiety and worry. For me. My heart swelled with fondness. Still I couldn’t muster up the energy to explain things to them. I typed up a simple response and sent it.

Honestly I wished I could just forgive and forget what had happened, but I knew the simmering fury and hurt beneath my skin would never let me move on so easily.

I took a deep breath, I didn’t need anger to cloud my thoughts now. I knew what I had to do.

I had a long day ahead of me.

The moment I stepped inside all conversation was brought to a halt. I could feel their guilt radiating off of them. On second thought, maybe I should’ve just stayed in bed.

I scanned the room before finally making eye contact with Uraraka. She gave me a small, sad smile. Tsuyu’s eyes were wide as she scrutinised me. Todoroki’s face was as deadpan as ever, but I could see concern shining bright in his eyes. I resisted the urge to reassure them all with a smile. Iida, on the other hand stared straight ahead, disregarding me entirely. I wasn’t surprised, he’d been acting like that for weeks.

I approached my desk swiftly and sat down, ignoring the stares of my classmates. I clenched my hands into fists, trying to ease their anxious trembling.

Kacchan glanced over his shoulder but for once I saw something other than anger and hatred in his eyes, his expression was hard to decipher. He appraised me for a quick second before turning back to the front.

What was that all about?

Before I could think too much about his odd behaviour, Aizawa-sensei walked in, looking as disheveled as ever. When he reached the front desk, his eyes swept over the room. His gaze on me was intense even without using his quirk, although I could see something akin to regret in his expression.

The class continued as it normally would, despite its tense atmosphere.

I sat through class in a constant daze, thinking and rethinking my decision from the night before. Usually I’d take notes but I could barely pay attention but luckily, Aizawa didn’t seem to mind.

My mind kept drifting back to my notebooks, which still hadn’t been returned to me. I was contemplating whether on not to continue writing in them. Alternatively I could just re-write them in code and burn the originals. As much as it would hurt to dispose of them, it would at least keep my notes out of the wrong hands. I glanced back up at Sensei. Or the wrong people.

Eventually the bell rang to dismiss us, and I snapped out of my thoughts. Shaking my head I reached down for my bag, when I heard someone clear their throat. Looking up I was startled to see...Kaminari?

He stood there with a sheepish smile.

“Look I get it looks really bad, but I swear we weren’t trying to go behind your back with this whole thing! But um, I just wanted to say... I’m sorry for thinking you were the traitor.”

I stared at him nonplussed.

“It’s just that...the evidence against you was really compelling, you’ve got to admit. It all seemed a little too coincidental y’know?”

“...”

Kaminari was starting to look uncomfortable now. He kept scratching the back of his head and glancing around the room.

But before I could say anything, another voice joined in.

“Yeah the weird mumbling didn’t really help your case either.”

“And all those notebooks! It was kinda weird how you obsessed over our quirks.”

“Not to mention how you were always at the centre of like, every villain attack this year! It’s just odd.”

I couldn’t take it anymore, they were trying justify their betrayal against me?

“ENOUGH! Are you seriously standing here trying to make excuses for the way you’ve treated me these past few weeks? You’ve alienated me from everyone else, ignored me at every chance you had, and worst of all, whispered about me behind my back!”

Kirishima shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Look Midoriya, we weren’t trying to...do any of that. We just trusted Aizawa-sensei judgement, after all he is a pro.”

“Of course and you couldn’t trust me right?” I scoffed.

“No of course you couldn’t! Why trust the creep, the weirdo who’s always muttering, the useless Deku.”

Immediately they began protesting, trying to explain themselves, but I didn’t want to hear anything else. I grabbed my bag and stormed out of the room. I sped down the corridor, so caught up in my emotions I didn’t notice a pair of calculating eyes following me.

“I’ve sorted out all the right paper work, though we have a few more weeks before we can tie up all the loose ends.”

“How much longer will you take? I’m already sick of this.” I grumbled into my phone.

“Patience son.” He chuckled.

I heard someone opening the bathroom door.

“I’ll call you back later. Bye.”

Fumbling with my phone I ended the call.

Knock. Knock.

“Midoriya?” said a very familiar voice.

I unlocked the door and swing it open to reveal Todoroki.
