Yashiro in a Hat

Summary:

Hanako carefully reached his hands out and rested the hat upon Yashiro’s head. He jerked his hands back, squeezing his eyes shut in fear of her waking up. He bit his lip, but didn’t hear any noise. So he cracked one eye open. Then the other.

A loud breath escaped his mouth, because wow.

Yashiro in a hat.

~

Or, Hanako finds Nene dozing off in a classroom after school hours. One thing leads to another, and he knows he’s fallen helplessly in love with the high school girl who wore his hat upon her head.

Notes:

Hey again! It’s been some time since I posted, sorry about that. I’ve— surprisingly— managed to write something that isn’t angst, look at that. I’d call this an accomplishment.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hanako was lonely most of the day.

Why, you may ask? Yashiro had forbidden him from visiting her during class. Something about him being too handsome- at least, that’s what he told himself. (Yashiro’s actual words were: “It’s a complete bother, and people will think I’m insane if I’m shooing away nothing.”)

It was hard at first, but Hanako got used to it. He’d play card games with the Mokke, he’d pester Tsuchigomori in between classes, he’d even attempt to sneak Haku-Joudai into Yashiro’s classroom for a bit, only for her to death glare it, and eventually he’d bring Haku-Joudai back to him out of guilt.

The good thing was, he still got to see Yashiro during after school hours when she’d come clean the bathrooms. It was now the highlight of Hanako’s day, and Yashiro didn’t even seem bothered that he was extra clingy when she was there. Today though, there was a problem.

School had let out twenty minutes ago, and Yashiro still hadn’t arrived.

At first, Hanako brushed it off as nothing. Perhaps she’d been given a task by her teacher and had to stay behind. She didn’t want him to go bother her, he wouldn’t bother her.

But now, Hanako could practically hear the seconds ticking by, and still no Yashiro.

He floated around the room, he bit his nails, he fiddled with his hat.

  Nothing.

Hanako decided the best thing to do was just sit and wait. So he sat himself down on the windowsill, legs crossed, chin resting on his hand as he stared at the open door.

...Which only lasted about fifteen seconds. Now, Hanako was up on his feet, and making his way to Yashiro’s classroom.

‘What if she’s been kidnapped?’ Thought the boy. ‘What if she’s hurt? What if she needs my help? What if she’s being held hostage and they’ll only let her go if she pays 10,000,000¥?’ Hanako stopped in his tracks.

  ‘What if she’s on a date ?’

He shook his head and forced himself to keep moving. ‘Yashiro’s class 1A, so her classroom should be right about...’ Hanako turned a corner. Sure enough, a big sign hung above an old wooden door reading “Class 1A.”

No light could be seen in the room except for the light pouring through the windows from the sunset. Hanako stood up on his tiptoes to peak through the window. No kids, no teacher, no book bags, it seemed like everybody had left a while ago. Then, he laid eyes on her.

  Yashiro.

Her arms were crossed on her desk, face resting on them sideways. Hanako quickly floated through the door and right over to Yashiro. As he approached her desk, he saw two stacks of papers. Most stapled, some not, like Yashiro had fallen asleep before she could get to them. Hanako slowly and quietly slid the papers out from under Yashiro’s arms, placing them on another desk off to the side.

He proceeded to grab the closest chair, and pull it up to the opposite side of Yashiro’s desk so he was facing her.

  And wow.

The sunlight shining through the window landed on Yashiro, as if it were a spotlight. It highlighted every one of her features, from her softly closed eyes, to her beautiful nose. Her perfectly shaped head, her gorgeous lips…

Hanako felt a blush growing on his face, as well as a smile. He’d fallen for her hard, and he knew it. How could you not? Everything about her was perfect, even her ankles (not that he’d ever admit that to Yashiro.)

He’d give anything to run his hands through that ombré hair, plant kisses on those perfect lips, and intertwine his hands through Yashiro’s fragile, soft ones.

He sighed, brushing a few strands of hair away from her eyes and causing the girl to stir. A groan escaped her lips, and Hanako held his breath, but Yashiro didn’t wake up. Exhaling a sigh of relief, he went back to admiring her.

In her new position, her chin was rested on top of her arms, and Hanako could see her face perfectly. He lifted his hand, and softly brushed his finger over the swoop of Yashiro’s nose. When she didn’t move, he repeated this action over and over again, wondering how somebody could really be that perfect.

Eventually, he retracted his hand. The sunlight was making the room hot, so Hanako quietly pulled off his hat. Holding it to his chest, he looked at Yashiro, then glanced back at the hat. Yashiro, hat. Yashiro, hat.

‘Don’t do it,’ he thought. ‘She’ll wake up. It’s not smart. It’s not a good idea. Think about this. But also think about Yashiro wearing a hat. Yashiro wearing a hat...Oh my gosh, Yashiro wearing a hat.’

And with that, Hanako carefully reached his hands out and rested the hat upon Yashiro’s head. He jerked his hands back, squeezing his eyes shut in fear of her waking up. He bit his lip, but didn’t hear any noise. So he cracked one eye open. Then the other.

A loud breath escaped his mouth, because wow.

  Yashiro in a hat.

She looked absolutely breathtaking. Her peaceful resting face, paired with his signature hat.

He could get used to that.

Hanako giggled softly, resting his head in his left hand. He reached one finger out and pushed down on the brim of the hat, causing it to fall over Yashiro’s eyes. Now, only her nose and lips could be seen.

Hanako felt his cheeks heat up. ‘She wouldn’t mind if I...’

The boy gulped, looking out the window. ‘No, she’ll wake up, don’t do that. Just admire the sunset. Yeah, the sunset.’

After looking at the sunset for about two seconds, Hanako’s gaze gradually shifted back to Yashiro. The hat looked so cute on her, he contemplated giving it to her.

‘No, that’s suspicious,’ he thought. ‘She’ll ask why, and what would I say, it makes you look cute?’

“This is your fault for being so pretty, you know that?” Hanako mumbled to the sleeping girl, eyes drifting down to her lips. Yashiro’s lips were right there, in all their glory. For so long Hanako had wanted to know what they would feel like on his own, what they’d taste like, and if she’d kiss him back. Now, an opportunity was right there, and he was hesitating to take it.

Casually, he began to lean forward, telling himself he just wanted to look at her closer.

He was a good 5 inches from her face. ‘I’m just..looking,’ he thought, cracking a smile. He closed his eyes and slowly tilted the hat up. Eyes still closed, Hanako leaned forward, assuring himself it would only be a small peck. When he felt he was almost at her lips, he opened his eyes just to check. But it wasn’t Yashiro’s lips he saw.

It was her eyes, beautiful and red, staring back at him.

Hanako’s eyes widened and he quickly jerked his head away as if nothing was happening.

‘Don’t look at her. Pretend like you’re asleep or something. Pretend like you were dreaming, pretend like you were moving in your sleep, anything. Just don’t look at her.’

  Hanako looked at her.

Yashiro’s eyes were wide, her lips parted slightly. Hanako instantly flushed bright red as he hesitantly met her eyes.

Big mistake. Yashiro was still wearing his hat, and she looked absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention the sunlight was hitting her, making her skin and eyes look golden. There was a slight pink blush on her perfect cheeks, and her ombré hair flowed down her shoulders.

Hanako felt his shoulders drop and his face relax.

“Wow...” he breathed, gazing at Yashiro like a deer in the headlights.

The girls lips formed into a line, and she gulped, looking down at her feet. Terror formed quickly on Hanako’s face as he realized what he had said.

“Haha, sorry...” he smiled, scratching the back of his neck. Yashiro just nodded in response.

Hanako stopped smiling as he noticed Yashiro’s uncomfortable expression.

The boy racked his brain for something to say, but was only left with “I’m gonna head to the bathroom. Come...whenever...” And began to get out of his chair.

Hanako had just started walking towards the door when Yashiro called out, “Hanako?”

Hanako froze at the sound of his name, then hesitantly turned around. “Yes?” He responded with a nervous smile.

Yashiro raised one eyebrow and chuckled. “Don’t you want your hat back?”

Hanako’s nervous smile dissolved, and he immediately patted the top of his bare head, then looked back at Yashiro.

Sure enough, Yashiro was clutching his hat at her chest, fingers drumming nervously on the rim.

“Haha, uh, yeah! Guess I’ll be needing that,” he laughed awkwardly, reaching over and grabbing the hat from Yashiro’s small hands.

He rested the hat back on his head, adjusting it a bit. After he was satisfied, he glanced back at Yashiro, who was playing with her thumbs.

Hanako cleared his throat. “Well, I’ll be heading to the bathroom now. Come whenever...”

He began to turn around, only for Yashiro to grab his wrist. Swiveling back around, he met Yashiro’s eyes. Hanako gulped as he waited for the girl to say something.

Yashiro froze, staring at Hanako. A few awkward moments passed, both the boy and the girl remaining silent.

“Y-Yashiro?” Hanako whispered, mentally bashing himself for stuttering.

Yashiro’s breath caught in her throat. Just when she started to believe that she  couldn’t follow through with it, she remembered how motivated she was a second ago. Taking a deep breath, Yashiro leaned in and planted a soft kiss on Hanako’s cheek.

As soon as Hanako felt Yashiro’s lips on his skin, his mind went blank. Yashiro was kissing him, and yeah it wasn’t on the lips and therefore didn’t count as a first kiss, but it was still the best feeling Hanako was sure he’d ever experience.

Yashiro tentatively removed her lips from Hanako’s cheek, and bit her lip.

Hanako’s hand subconsciously made its way up to where Yashiro kissed him, and he swore he’d never wash his cheek again.

The ghost started at Yashiro with wide eyes, before snapping out of his trance and stuttering, “Well, I-I’ll be heading to the bathroom now...Come-“

“Whenever, yeah, I got that,” Yashiro laughed, letting go of Hanako’s wrist to grab her papers and make her way to the door.

“Heh, sorry,” Hanako mumbled, glancing down at the ground.

“Yeah, yeah,” Yashiro laughed. “I’ll be heading to the bathroom now, come....whenever.” And with a wink, the girl walked out the door.

Hanako just stood in the classroom, staring at the door Yashiro had just walked out. ‘Yeah,’ he thought, touching his cheek again. ‘I’m definitely in love with her.’
