Bunnies for Christmas

Summary:

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian's first Christmas together since getting together/married. A-Yuan opens presents, everyone is adorable and loves each other.

Notes:

This fic is technically a sequel/extra for my ongoing Dadji threadfic about single dad LWJ falling for his son's kindergarten teacher! However, considering that fic isn't even finished yet I certainly would not say you need to read that one first to enjoy this one!

For my dadji readers: this fic takes place the following school year, so A-Yuan is in 1st grade now and WWX is no longer his teacher. Also wangxian are married in this fic!!!

This fic is a collab with the amazingly wonderful Rima @sweetlittlevam1 who made GORGEOUS art you can see here.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A-Yuan wakes up on Christmas morning and immediately jumps out of bed. He wastes no time dashing half-way down the staircase and gasps when he sees the changed state of the living room. Wrapped presents are stacked under and around their lit Christmas tree and the stockings hanging above the fireplace are visibly full and overflowing. He quickly turns on his heel and bounds back up the staircase.

The gasp and the pitter-patter of excited footsteps alert Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian to the fact that A-Yuan is, finally, awake.

“Lan Zhan, I know you don’t like lying to him but can we just pretend to be asleep? Please! Think about how happy it will make him! Plus, you’re already lying to him about Santa so this is hardly much worse-”

Lan Wangji cuts Wei Wuxian off with a kiss pressed to the corner of his mouth.

“Mn. Lay back down before he comes in.” Lan Wangji instructs closing his eyes and curling his arms around his husband.

WWX quickly does as he’s told, melting against his husband’s embrace and biting down on his lip to tame the wide grin that attempts to overtake his face and blow his cover.

Their bedroom door opens and the gasp A-Yuan emits from seeing both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji still sleeping is more than worth it.

A-Yuan rushes forward and hops onto the bed so that he can wrap his arms around the ‘sleeping’ adults.

“Papa! Wei-gege! Santa came! Wake up! It’s Christmas!” He excitedly exclaims.

Neither one can keep up the act for much longer at the sound of A-Yuan’s excitement so they both ‘wake up’ and turn towards him.

Wei Wuxian lets out an Oscar-worthy gasp.

“Santa really came!?” Wei Wuxian asks as A-Yuan practically vibrates out of his skin.

“Yes!” A-Yuan yells. “I looked downstairs and Santa left so many presents under the tree!”

“It’s a Christmas miracle!” Wei Wuxian shouts back.

“Yes, it is!” A-Yuan says standing up between Wei Wuxian’s and Lan Wangji’s legs and jumping up and down. “It’s really Christmas!”

“Mn. Merry Christmas, bunny.” Lan Wangji says.

A-Yuan falls back down onto the bed and wraps his arms around Lan Wangji’s neck in a tight hug.

“Merry Christmas, Papa! I love you!” A-Yuan says before pulling away to give Wei Wuxian a hug too. “Merry Christmas, Wei-gege!”

“Merry Christmas, A-Yuan.” Wei Wuxian responds, feeling incredibly warm.

“I love you, Wei-gege.” A-Yuan adds, looking down at the bed.

“I love you too, A-Yuan.” Wei Wuxian says, pulling him back in for another hug. A-Yuan is still a bit shyer about saying those words to him than he is to Lan Wangji but each time Wei Wuxian hears them, his heart soars. The day has barely started but Wei Wuxian already knows he has never had a better Christmas in his life.

“Can we go open presents?” A-Yuan asks, smiling hopefully at Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.

“Mn.” Lan Wangji says, causing A-Yuan to launch himself off the bed. As he runs out of the bedroom the bunny ears on the hood of his pink bunny onesie bounce on his head. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian share a fond smile before they trail after him in their matching onesies.

“Wow!” Wei Wuxian says as he descends the stairs with his husband. “Santa really did come!”

“He did!” A-Yuan says from across the living room. “And look! He even drank our milk and ate our cookies.”

A-Yuan holds up a half-eaten cookie and half-empty glass of milk.

“And the carrots are gone!” He adds. “Santa must have given the carrots to the reindeer!”

“Mn. I hope the reindeer enjoyed the carrots and that Santa enjoyed his oat milk.” Lan Wangji says, throwing a sly look towards his husband. He had forced Wei Wuxian to eat the carrots last night with the promise of letting him have some of the milk and cookies, only for Wei Wuxian to find out Lan Wangji had duped him into drinking oat milk.

“I bet Santa would have preferred whole milk with his cookies.” Wei Wuxian whispers.

“If Santa had whole milk then he would have spent the night in the restroom instead of delivering presents.” Lan Wangji counters.

The two are interrupted when A-Yuan runs into their legs, hooking an arm around each man.

“Papa, you can make coffee for Wei-gege so he’s awake and I’ll go get the bunnies!” A-Yuan instructs before running off to the rabbits’ room.

“Wow, Lan Zhan, your son knows me far too well.” Wei Wuxian says.

“Mn.” Lan Wangji agrees, placing a kiss on Wei Wuxian’s cheek. “Sit, I’ll bring you coffee.”

“Ah, Lan Zhan! You spoil me.” Wei Wuxian says collapsing onto the couch. However, as soon as Lan Wangji disappears into the kitchen, Wei Wuxian bounces back up and rushes off to find A-Yuan with the rabbits. He finds A-Yuan holding Carrot and Whiskers in their room.

“A-Yuan how’s our surprise for Papa doing?” Wei Wuxian asks.

“Good! Should we give Papa his present now?”

“Hm, how about after you open your gifts from Santa?”

“Ok!” A-Yuan agrees, eager to open his presents.

“Let’s hide Papa’s present behind the tree!” Wei Wuxian says.

A-Yuan takes Carrot and Whiskers into the living room and helps Wei Wuxian hide Lan Wangji’s gift. Before Lan Wangji notices his absence, Wei Wuxian drapes himself back onto the couch, as if he’s been there the entire time. Not a second later, Lan Wangji walks in with two steaming mugs in his hands.

“Black coffee.” Lan Wangji says, placing the mug into his husband’s hands as he sits down next to him and takes a sip of his own green tea.

“You’re the best, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian says curling up close next to Lan Wangji.

“Present time?” A-Yuan asks hopefully, standing next to the tree.

“Mn. Let’s see what Santa left for you.” Lan Wangji says.

A-Yuan tears into the wrapping paper of his presents, screaming and jumping up to show Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian every exciting new toy from Santa. As Christmas morning unfolds, Carrot naps on Lan Wangji’s slippers and Whiskers nibbles at A-Yuan’s discarded pile of wrapping paper.

Wei Wuxian is overjoyed from seeing A-Yuan so excited and happy. A-Yuan’s squeals of delight paired with Lan Wangji’s wider-than-usual smile are a direct attack on Wei Wuxian’s heart. He marvels at how he got so lucky to be welcomed into this perfect little family.

Far too quickly, it’s over and A-Yuan has unwrapped all his presents, and Lan Wangji, ever prepared, is helping him put batteries into his new toys.

“A-Yuan, what do you say we give Papa his present?” Wei Wuxian asks as A-Yuan flies a toy butterfly around the living room.

“Yes!” A-Yuan says taking Wei Wuxian’s hand and pulling him off the couch.

As the two walk to where they stashed the present behind the Christmas tree, Wei Wuxian turns around and points a stern finger at his husband. “No peeking!”

“Yeah! Close your eyes, Papa!” A-Yuan chimes in.

“Mn.” Lan Wangji does as he’s told, closing his eyes and sitting still on the couch with his hands folded in his lap.

Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan each grab one half of Lan Wangji’s Christmas gift and share a wide grin before walking over to him.

“Keep your eyes closed.” Wei Wuxian instructs as he reaches out and repositions Lan Wangji’s hands so they are cupped open before him as he and A-Yuan place something warm and fluffy into them.

“Open.” Wei Wuxian says and Lan Wangji gasps as he sees two baby bunnies, one tan and one light brown, held in his hands. He looks up at Wei Wuxian with wide glimmering eyes.

“Are they…?” Lan Wangji asks, his voice soft and hopeful.

“They’re your new bunnies, Papa.” A-Yuan says softly, as to not startle the baby bunnies.

“Mine?” Lan Wangji asks, stroking the small animals.

“Yours.” Wei Wuxian agrees.

“Ours.” Lan Wangji amends, causing Wei Wuxian to laugh.

Wei Wuxian watches as Lan Wangji picks up each tiny rabbit and gives it a kiss on the head.

“Hello.” He whispers against the soft fur.

Wei Wuxian puts a hand to his chest. His husband is the cutest thing in the world. No one else can possibly compare.

Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan huddle in close with Lan Wangji to pet the new additions to their family.

“Thank you.” Lan Wangji says sincerely, looking at his son and husband. “I love them, very much.”

“You’re welcome, Papa! We love them too!” A-Yuan says and Lan Wangji gives him a fond smile.

“Lan Zhan, you’re too cute, I might get you new bunnies every day just to see you like this.” Wei Wuxian says, pecking a kiss onto his husband’s cheek.

“Mn. New bunnies every day is a good idea.” Lan Wangji says, cradling the baby bunnies against his cheek.

“A-Yuan, I think we won Christmas. We got Papa the best present ever.” Wei Wuxian says reaching around Lan Wangji to give A-Yuan a high-five.

“But Wei Ying has yet to open his Christmas present.” Lan Wangji says.

“Ah, Lan Zhan, you don’t need to get me anything! What more could I want than this?” Wei Wuxian says honestly.

Lan Wangji simply shakes his head as A-Yuan gets up and grabs a package hiding off to the side of the Christmas tree.

As A-Yuan approaches him, Wei Wuxian realizes with surprise that he looks nervous. He gives the boy a big smile as he takes the present from him.

“Thank you, A-Yuan.” Wei Wuxian says. He looks down at the present which is labeled ‘To Baba From A-Yuan.’

“Oh, Lan Zhan, this is for you.” Wei Wuxian says, leaving the present on his lap as Lan Wangji’s is still occupied by the bunnies. “Silly boy, you mixed up B and P, which I know you know because I taught it to you last year! Should we do a review lesson? I know they can be tricky letters!”

“No.” A-Yuan says adamantly.

“Ok, ok. No schoolwork over the break.” Wei Wuxian says. “Maybe we’ll practice a bit after winter break.”

“No, I never mix up B and P.” A-Yuan says.

Wei Wuxian realizes that he’s right. Even last year as a kindergartener A-Yuan had no issues with the alphabet, no doubt thanks to Lan Wangji’s stellar parenting.

“It’s ok, A-Yuan.” Wei Wuxian comforts the boy. “Everyone makes mistakes sometimes!”

“But I didn’t make a mistake!” A-Yuan insists, pointing to the label on the present. “It says ‘For Baba’ because it’s for Baba.”

“Who-” Wei Wuxian begins to say before his voice escapes him.

The present is for him. The present says ‘For Baba.’ Wei Wuxian is Baba.

Wei Wuxian looks up between A-Yuan and Lan Wangji before turning his gaze back down to the present. With shaking hands he unwraps the gift meticulously, removing the paper with special care so he doesn’t rip the label. He fully plans on framing it and hanging it up on the wall.

Truthfully, the present itself doesn’t matter to him. Being A-Yuan’s Baba is already far more than enough, far more than he feels he deserves. Wei Wuxian doesn’t think the present could mean more to him than the label until he opens up a box and reveals a piece of paper that reads ‘Certificate of Adoption’ at the top.

Wei Wuxian realizes he’s crying when he sees a tear land onto the crisp white paper of the adoption form. He thinks to himself, ‘Oh, I definitely don’t want to ruin the form with my tears,’ as he places it to the side and pulls A-Yuan in for a tight hug. A-Yuan wraps his arms around his waist as Wei Wuxian cries into the crook of his son’s neck.

“So you want to be my Baba?” A-Yuan asks with a shaky voice.

“More than anything in the world.” Wei Wuxian says, pulling back to look his son in the eyes only to immediately hide his face in A-Yuan’s pajamas when he sees the boy is crying too.

Wei Wuxian feels his husband’s hand rubbing comforting circles onto his back as he cries.

“Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian whispers, turning to see Lan Wangji has also started to cry while watching the exchange between his husband and son.

Wei Wuxian reaches an arm out to pull Lan Wangji into their hug and he goes back and forth between planting kisses onto his son and husband’s faces. Wei Wuxian feels Lan Wangji shake in his arms with silent tears.

“Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji says hoarsely, holding onto his husband and son for dear life.

A-Yuan looks at his fathers and wipes the seemingly endless stream of tears from their cheeks, although his own bright eyes still glisten.

“Baba, did you know last year for Christmas I asked Santa for a second dad?” A-Yuan says as Wei Wuxian chokes on a sob. “And this year he gave it to me!”

Wei Wuxian squeezes A-Yuan in between him and Lan Wangji and decides today is the best day of his life, somehow surpassing his wedding day from this summer.

“And here I thought I got Papa the best Christmas present.” Wei Wuxian says, a smile adorning his tear-streaked face. “A-Yuan you really conspired against both of your dads, huh?”

A-Yuan looks down sheepishly but no one is fooled. It has been well established that he is the true mastermind in their family.

“We both got bunnies for Christmas.” Lan Wangji says with a smile.

“We did!” Wei Wuxian says, laughing. “How lucky are we?”

“Very lucky.” Lan Wangji says.

“Right, bunny?” Wei Wuxian asks A-Yuan.

“Right, Baba.” A-Yuan says.
