Would You Like To Dance With Me?

Summary:

Phoenix and Miles have their first date night in a while, and both decide to make the most of it.

Notes:

Despite the date I'm posting this, this is NOT a Christmas fic. It can be interpreted as such, but it was just a coincidence that it was posted today.

Song used: Stay With Me by Miki Matsubara

Thanks to my wonderful sibling and beta reader @parttimewhales, I headcanon Phoenix as being half Japanese (it works with dgs too *eyeball emojis*.) That's the reason why I used this specific song for this chapter. It's fun and catchy, and I think someone like Phoenix would have enjoyed it.

Chapter 1: Stay With Me

Chapter Text

There weren’t many days where both Phoenix and Miles not only had the day off from work, but the house to themselves too. Trucy was staying with Maya and Pearl for the weekend, and Phoenix decided to make something nice for dinner, since it had been too long since the two of them had an official “date night.”

His phone was hooked up to the little speaker he had set on the countertop, playing music from an upbeat playlist as he chopped garlic, peppers and onions to begin sauteing them once the steaks were done. Miles always acted wary whenever Phoenix listened to music while cooking; but he knew the prosecutor secretly loved watching his dearest defense attorney act so jovial and carefree while doing an otherwise challenging task outside his element.

The Blondie song came to a close, transitioning to a favorite song from Phoenix’s childhood and teenage years.

The intro to the song caused an almost natural in-place dance to sprout from Phoenix’s hips and shoulders as he swayed along to the music.

~“Watashi wa watashi, anata wa anata to.”~

He would have missed Miles watching him from the kitchen entrance had he not also heard the sound of Pess’ footsteps on the tiled floor. Miles must have just let her back inside from an exciting run in the backyard, judging from her heavy breathing as she plopped down onto the mat in front of the sink.

Phoenix checked the steaks one more time before moving them to their designated plates, replacing them with the vegetables in the same pan with some seasoning and a small amount of oil to keep them from immediately burning.

~“Yuube iwareta sonna ki mo suru wa.”~

Phoenix sang just loud enough for Miles to hear him over the sound of the music and the sizzling of the pan. He peeked over his shoulder and their eyes met, sending that oh so wonderful flutter to Miles’ heart as Phoenix flashed him a smile.

Phoenix returned his focus back to his work, yet Miles never once tore his gaze from the other man’s back.

~“Grey no jacket ni mioboe ga aru ko-hi- no shimi.”~

Phoenix turned the heat down to a simmer and rested his wooden spoon onto the potholder that sat next to the stove before turning fully to Miles, gesturing with his fingers for him to breach the distance between them.

Miles crossed the room, meeting Phoenix’s outstretched hands with his own as he was gently pulled forward, urged to begin a little dance where they just shuffled on their feet and swayed their hips and still connected hands together along the beat.

~“Aikawarazuna no ne…”~

“Don’t let me distract you, Phoenix,” Miles whispered, despite making no moves to stop or pull away.

Phoenix smiled and bit his lip, pure glee shining in his eyes.

~“Shou window ni futari utsureba.”~

“What I’m doing relies on sound and smell right now. Besides, I thought you liked watching me dance,” Phoenix grinned again.

“Hmm… I do.” Miles’ smile wasn’t nearly as big, but it still held the same amount of love nonetheless.

~“Stay with me… Mayonakanodoa o tataki,”~

Right as the chorus hit, Phoenix sang with his whole heart, finally forcing a mirth filled grin to break out over Miles’ now slightly pink tinted cheeks. He yearned for so long to see Phoenix this happy, this content, yet actually fulfilling that little accomplishment everyday always made his heart soar.

Phoenix had taught him the translation of the song after playing it during their third official date, yet something about hearing Phoenix so flawlessly singing it in Japanese put a spring in his already ecstatic step.

~“Kaeranaide to naita.”~

Phoenix lifted one set of their connected hands to form a little archway as his other hand freed itself from Miles’ and gently pushed his lower back, lightly spinning him as his voice carried along with the song.

Miles spun back around after teasing Phoenix with a short bow of his head, wrapping his arms around Phoenix’s neck right as he felt the other’s hands intertwine over his lower back.

~“Ano kisetsu ga ima-ma no mae.”~

Their swaying continued, albeit much slower and with their feet planted. Phoenix quickly reached over and turned the music down a few notches, allowing them to talk for a brief moment.

“I truly can’t remember a time where I was as content as this,” Miles said with gentle adoration lining his entire expression.

“I was gonna joke and say our wedding, but I didn’t want to ruin the moment…” Phoenix pressed their foreheads together as Miles’ hands slid down to sit over his chest.

~“Stay with me… Kuchiguse wo ii nagara,”~

“Mm, you’re right about that,” Miles quietly hummed.

“Well of course I’m Wright,” Phoenix said. Miles only groaned and moved his head to Phoenix’s shoulder, mentally punching himself for setting up such an atrocious (and too commonly used these days) dad joke. Phoenix gently held him tighter.

“And technically speaking, so are you,” Phoenix muttered before burying his nose into the crook of Miles’ neck.

“Well ‘technically speaking,’” Miles moved back enough to cup Phoenix’s jaw and press his lips to the shell of his ear. “I believe you were in the middle of something.”

~“Futari no toki wo daite.”~

Phoenix suddenly released Miles and went back to the stove, turning the heat back up as he began stirring the contents of the pan around.

Miles’ arms circled around Phoenix’s stomach, and Phoenix could feel the other’s chin resting on his shoulder.

“I’ll let you finish this while I set the table. Do you want me to set up the record player?”

“Sure. I’m in the mood for something classical tonight.”

“What a rare statement from you.”

“Can you also take out the Elton John record? My urge to dance is still prominent.” Phoenix wiggled his eyebrows, despite Miles being unable to see.

~“Mada wasurezu daiji ni shiteita.”~

Miles chuckled and nodded before moving to the dining room with Pess happily trotting after him. He set the placemats, silverware, wine glasses and a beverage of choice on the table before shuffling through the small box of records kept under the little desk holding the player itself.

By the time everything was set up and a simple Tchaikovsky symphony played from the record player, Phoenix had set some dishes in the sink and entered with their dinner.

Miles had their drinks poured as Phoenix sat down. They toasted to each other, ready to spend the night alone with only each other as company.
