Work Text:

Kaminari prided himself on being kind, on being a friend to everyone - but he couldn’t help but to feel jealous. Everyone had a family to go spend Christmas with, but Kaminari was destined to spend it alone at the dorms. His father was in America for work, and his mother was busy with her own work in Japan, having a job that took her all over the country on various different missions.

(She was why he wanted to become a hero - he wanted to help people just like she did, but with every passing year that made him feel even more alone, he couldn’t help but to feel like it was a pointless career if he ever had hope for a family.)

Jealousy was a dirty feeling, and Kaminari hated every second he felt his jealousy grow, but there was nothing he could do to stop it. Why did everyone else get to have a family around to spend the time with? Why was he the one stuck spending the holiday without so much as a phone call from either parent?

“Why are you still here?” Bakugou scoffed as he came down the stairs and noticed Kaminari in the common room. Bakugou was the last person to leave, coming down the stairs with his bags packed and ready to go for the two weeks they’d be off for Christmas break.

“I’m staying here for the break.” Kaminari said simply.

“No i got that,” The explosive blond huffed, “But why?

Kaminari wasn’t sure how to respond for a few seconds, but eventually he said all that he could come up with, “My parents are too busy to have Christmas this year.”

Bakugou mimicked Kaminari’s quiet as a moment passed. “Come spend it with me.”

“What?” Kaminari said, feeling like this had to have been a prank. There was no way thay Bakugou Katsuki was inviting him over for Christmas. It made no sense.

“It’ll prove to my parents that I actually have friends, and you won’t be alone for two weeks.” Bakugou grumbled. Kaminari felt like there had to be more to it than that, but he didn’t push. “Just go and get your shit together and we can take the next train, it’s not too far away.”

Kaminari nodded, hurrying up to his room and collecting everything he’d need for two weeks into a small suitcase, including the dreadful homework. Hey - if he was going to be spending the break with number three in the class, then he would make use of it. He still wasn’t sure why Bakugou insisted on them spending the break together, but at least it would be better than spending it alone.

-

The train ride was spent silently, but when Kaminari started resting his head against Bakugou’s shoulder, he couldn’t help but to notice that Bakugou didn’t seem to care. If anything, it almost seemed like Bakugou rested his head against Kaminari’s in return.

Kaminari told himself he was imagining it, but the pressure on top of his head said otherwise. It was unfortunate that the train ride had to be so short, because not long after was their moment ruined with them having to get off.

Neither of them mentioned anything about the moment after they’d gotten off the train. In fact, nothing was said until they arrived at Bakugou’s house.

“Why didn’t you tell us you were inviting someone!” Bakugou’s mother exclaimed when they walked through the door, not even giving them a chance to say anything as they entered.

“It was last minute. He’s staying for the break.” Bakugou huffed, kicking off his shoes impatiently and dragging Kaminari behind him after Kaminari was done, their bags lugging alongside them.

“Aren’t you going to introduce him to us?” His father said quietly, glancing at them from where he was sitting on the couch.

“No, fuck off.” Bakugou groaned.

When they got to his room, they set their bags down and Bakugou closed the door shut behind him with a sigh. “Sorry, they can be annoying.”

Kaminari hummed in response, not really knowing whether to agree or disagree. Well, he only really saw them for what felt like five seconds, so it wasn’t like he could have an opinion.

“We actually don’t have a guest room, so do you mind just staying in my room together? If not, I can just go sleep on the couch later.” Bakugou asked, sitting down on the bed after pushing his bag into a corner.

“Oh, yeah, we can just share your bed. It’s chill.” Kaminari said calmly, despite how much a voice in the back of his head was screaming at him that it was very unlikely that they didn’t have a guest room with how big their house was. Albeit, Kaminari wasn’t about to ruin whatever Bakugou seemed to be planning. It was nice to not be alone, afterall.

As the two had arrived past dinnertime, all that was left for them to do was to waste time until it was late enough to go to bed. Kaminari pulled out one of the books he took with him as Bakugou got to work on the homework. Kaminari knew it would be smart to join the explosive blond in getting the homework done early, but the thought of doing that dragged out all of the Christmas spirit that Kaminari was building up.

Bakugou tucked into bed as early as he usually did, and Kaminari couldn’t help but to join him. He didn’t want to end up disturbing Bakugou later, as he was afraid of being sent back to the dorms and having to spend Christmas alone, just as he had originally planned. Even though it was his original plan, and he knew that realistically, Bakugou wouldn’t do that, he couldn’t help the sinking feeling in his chest whenever he thought of how bad it would feel.

(The warmth that surrounded him as he joined Bakugou under the covers concealed all of his bad feelings. It felt comforting - even more so when he realized he was surrounded by Bakugou’s scent.)

“‘Night, Kacchan,” Kaminari mumbled into the darkness.

“G’night, Denki,” Bakugou returned, and the usage of Kaminari’s given name made his heart fill with new, better feelings.

(The fluttering in his chest felt so much better than the sinking.)

How was he supposed to last two weeks when Bakugou made him feel like this?

-

As the sun rose the next morning, it revealed Christmas Eve, and Kaminari could feel the holiday spirit to his very core. Even if the Bakugou family didn’t seem to do much for Christmas, it still felt amazing to be around people. Even if he wasn’t expecting gifts of any kind, not being alone was all that he could ask for.

Bakugou’s parents had left early on in the day, which translated to Katsuki as “we get free reign of the kitchen.”

So, baking it was. By the end of a few hours, they had more cookies than Kaminari knew what to do with. And they tasted so good. Maybe it was the fact that they were handmade and not store bought, or it could’ve been the fact that Katsuki made them - or even just that he was glad to have someone to spend Christmas with - but they tasted godly.

“You look like you’re enjoying yourself.” Bakugou mumbled, but it didn’t sound as harsh as you’d expect the words to be coming from Bakugou.

“They taste good.” Kaminari huffed in response.

“Does your family never do Christmas baking?” Bakugou asked, an eyebrow raised.

“Well, we never really do Christmas. They’re too busy.” Kaminari said quietly, grabbing another cookie off of the cooling rack and biting into it. Bakugou didn’t respond to that, rather he looked away and seemed deep in thought. Kaminari didn’t want to ask what he was thinking about - he just wanted to keep the mood light to have at least one good Christmas.

By the time they were finished, it was dark outside and Katsuki’s parents were already back, and Katsuki himself decided to start dinner. His parents hadn’t bothered them in the kitchen, only requested to have some baking saved for them when they were finished.

“Are we really going to spend the entire day in the kitchen?” Kaminari pouted. Part of him wanted to go outside and savour the snow on the ground before it was too late, but the rest of him wanted to stay with Bakugou, where he felt warm and safe.

“It’s relaxing, to me.” Bakugou explained shortly.

“Well, what’s got you so stressed?” Kaminari asked, only for his question to be left unanswered. He got the hint enough and didn’t try to push, rather just stood in the kitchen out of Bakugou’s way and let the boy do his own thing for dinner.

Surprisingly, Bakugou didn’t go to sleep as early as he usually did, even after all of their baking was finished and dinner was done. Maybe he was also feeling the Christmas spirit, or maybe he was just sensing the excitement that ran through Kaminari’s bones alongside the electricity.

The two sat in the living room watching a childish Christmas movie - by Bakugou’s choice, he’d been surprised that Kaminari hadn’t seen it, given how excited the electric blond was at the holiday. At one point, when it was nearing midnight, Bakugou got up to go and do something. Kaminari almost thought that he’d gone to bed, but he didn’t hear Bakugou go up the stairs, so he continued to watch the movie. Eventually, Bakugou came back, and Kaminari almost forgot about how Bakugou had gotten up.

Almost. But when Bakugou pulled him up before the movie finished and brought him to the front door, his confusion returned full force.

“It’s nice outside, isn’t it?” Bakugou said, taking a step out into the cold night air. The world around them felt lit up with the neighbours decorations and lights, and Kaminari felt amazing. It was cold, but he had never felt warmer than that moment, standing beside Bakugou as he glanced around at all of the beautiful lights surrounding them.

“Beautiful,” Kaminari mumbled, a small smile on his face as he stepped out to stand beside Bakugou.

A few moments of silence passed between them, before Kaminari felt Bakugou’s warm hands through his shirt, causing him to turn and look at the explosive blond. The hands didn’t move from Kaminari’s waist, although Bakugou was very evidently avoiding Kaminari’s eyes.

“I didn’t have time to go out and get you a present, so I hope this works, instead,” Bakugou said, moving a hand to Kaminari’s jaw and pulling their faces closer together. He gave Kaminari plenty of time to move away, but Kaminari only wanted to move faster.

He felt Bakugou’s touch on his cold lips, even colder with the cold air surrounding them, but they were quickly warming up as Bakugou’s warmth surrounded him, and he never wanted to let go. He’d rather die of suffocation than pull away from Bakugou’s kiss, scared that it would never happen again.

Despite Kaminari’s thoughts, Bakugou seemed to want to breathe after this was all over, and so he pulled away. He rested his forehead against Kaminari’s, and Kaminari found himself clutching at the fabric at Bakugou’s sides, not yet ready to let go of Bakugou’s touch completely.

“What was that for?” Kaminari asked curiously when he’d caught his breath.

“Look up.” Bakugou told him, and so he did, because he’d do anything that Bakugou asked him to, and he caught a glimpse of mistletoe hanging from the top of the porch. “Merry Christmas.”

“Is it past midnight already?” Kaminari said, stunned that he’d lost track of the time so easily when he was so excited.

“Has been for a bit-” Bakugou started, only to be interrupted by Kaminari pulling him back in for yet another kiss. This time, Kaminari;s hands held onto Bakugou’s jaw as Bakugou wrapped his arms around Kaminari’s waist, trying to pull him closer despite how little space there already was between them.

“Please don’t let this end.” Kaminari mumbled as he pulled away.

“It doesn’t need to, if you’ll be my boyfriend.” Bakugou said. “But I’d really like to go to sleep, actually.”

Kaminari stared at him, amazed. All that he could do was nod, no words coming to him in his lovestruck state.

Bakugou walked back inside, pulling Kaminari behind them and closing the door before they made their way to Bakugou’s room.

This time, Kaminari didn’t need to long for Bakugou’s touch, he could freely seek it out. As they lay curled together, all he could think of was how glad he was that he didn’t need to spend Christmas alone - rather, he could spend it in Bakugou’s arms, surrounded by his comforting presence.
