Kobayashi used to think that marriage is a scam. She couldn’t even begin to comprehend why two people would choose to spend the rest of their lives together, all the time, 24/7, you get the point. She thought that she would spend the rest of her life happily alone, that is, until Tohru landed in her life.
Kobayashi doesn’t know when she started to fall for Tohru. She cannot pinpoint a specific date for when they officially began dating (or whatever they had between them is labelled as); the years just kind of blurred. Before she knew it, Kanna had graduated from high school, and she had been waking up in Tohru’s arms every morning for many, many years.
“Kobayashi”, Tohru rubbed her head against Kobayashi’s chin. It was a sunny April afternoon and the two were cuddling on the sunbathed sofa. They had visited Kanna at her student apartment earlier that day, and were relieved to see that she was doing well. Exhausted from the drive home, Kobayashi collapsed onto the couch as soon as they reached home, where she was soon joined by Tohru on top of her. Two very excruciating minutes after feeling like her back will break, she pushed Tohru off to her side, where she wrapped her arms tightly around her dragon.
“Hmm.” Kobayashi kissed the top of Tohru’s head. Tohru hasn’t changed since the day that she met her, whereas Kobayashi had just noticed the first signs of wrinkles on her face. With constant back pains and sore shoulders, Kobayashi was constantly reminded of the fact that she is no longer young.
Tohru pushed her slightly aside to slip through her arms. Under Kobayashi’s curious gaze, she kneeled on the floor. Taking her hand in her own, she placed a gentle kiss on it. “Kobayashi, will you marry me?”
“Where did this come from?” Kobayashi chuckled. This topic has come up before in the past, however she has always managed to avoid it. She didn’t want to make a lifelong commitment to Tohru, only to die before the young dragon and have her heartbroken for the rest of her life.
“Because I love you.” Tohru squeezed her hand. “And I want to make a commitment to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“What the heck Tohru.” Kobayashi smiled back at the young dragon, whose face was masked in the sunlight. “You have a long life, you’ll still be here when I am long gone. You shouldn’t throw away your entire life on an old woman like me.”
Tohru shook her head, “No no no, Kobayashi, it is precisely because you’re old.” She released her hand and reached into her pocket, where she took out a small red velvet case. Kobayashi felt her heart skip a beat.
“Are you calling me old?” She asked, desperately trying to calm her fast beating heart down.
Tohru was flustered, “No, I thought to ask because I want to spend the rest of the time that you have on earth with you.” She peered up at Kobayashi from where she knelt on the floor. “So, is that a no?”
Kobayashi did not know what came over her, but she reached out to Tohru with her left hand. “It’s a yes.” She smiled as she watched Tohru’s face lit up in excitement. Carefully, Tohru opened the box to reveal the ring. It was a simple silver band, with a small yellow stone set in the centre. Slowly, Tohru lifted out the ring and slipped it onto Kobayashi’s finger, or she tried to.
“You don’t know my ring size do you?” Kobayashi asked, trying to hold in her laughter while the ring dangled from her finger; it was way too big for her ring finger. She removed it from her ring finger and placed it around her thumb, where it fit perfectly.
Tohru groaned.
Maybe, being married is not the worst thing in the world.
