Work Text:

Soulmates, Katsuki knew, had a touch of destiny to them. Statistically, the most likely place to meet your soulmate was in higher education or at work. It was hardly a surprise to walk into 1A for his first day as UA and see a boy with flaming red hair spiked back from his face, fully revealing the scar over his eye which had caused the thin pale line over Katsuki’s. His hands, which he was gesturing with as he told a story to one of the extras in their class, bore faint marks of Katsuki’s own injuries from the days before he knew the limits of his own quirk. What was way more surprising was seeing another boy, with hair split between deep red and snowy white, bearing a darker and even uglier version of the scar that dominated the left half of Deku’s face.

He’d never said it, because his grief was with Deku not his mysterious soulmate, but he’d always thought that the person who scarred Deku that badly must be just as weak as that moron. Like attracts like, after all. And yet, here Deku’s soulmate was in the UA Hero Course. So obviously, either he was gonna flunk out for being a weak piece of shit or the universe had seen fit to balance Deku’s shitty scales with a soulmate strong enough to protect his dumb ass.

Katsuki claimed a seat by the windows- his soulmate was in the same class, no need to be clingy- and had just finished unpacking his bag into his desk when the door opened to admit Deku. The shitstain froze for a second when he saw him, but then, inevitable as gravity, as magnetism, his gaze was drawn towards his soulmate. A hand flew up to his mouth, and Katsuki rolled his eyes. Really, what did the idiot think his soulmate would look like, after landing him with a scar like that?

Deku, clingy wimp that he was, made a beeline for his soulmate’s desk rather than choose one for himself, but the split-haired future hero barely acknowledged him. Shit, Katsuki didn’t give a single fuck about manners or propriety and even he knew that was about the rudest thing you could do to your soulmate. His hadn’t even noticed him yet, his marks weren’t half so visible as Deku’s and split-hair’s. Not talking to him first-thing wasn’t the same as ignoring an attempt at conversation.

Well, if they were supposed to be opposites like his parents, Katsuki guessed that made sense. Deku was a shitty, weak crybaby. A soulmate of opposing temperament would be strong and stoic, and probably pretty awesome if not for Deku’s shittiness dragging him down. Still, he kinda wondered how far either of them would be able to get in this class before dropping out. Smart money said one or both of them wouldn’t even make it to the Sport Festival.
