Work Text:
“Present Mic! Fans have been wondering for years if there is a specific reason behind your signature hair style, what do you have to say to these questions?” A Reporter asks him as her microphone gets shoved closer to his face.
“I’m sorry, mam. At the moments I need to take care that this criminal makes it into custody. I’ll be available to answer questions at a later date.” He tells her and walks off with the woman he had just arrested held firmly in his hands.
He can hear the reporter calling after him but turns all of his attention to guiding the criminal into the police car. He hops into the front seat of the car to accompany them to the police station.
Sansa climbs into the driver’s side and gives him a look.
“You know you can fill out your paperwork once your shift ends, right?” He asks as he starts the car.
“Yeah, I just need to get away from that reporter.” He tells the cat headed officer.
He can hear the woman in the back of the car making muffled noises. The quirk cancelling muzzle looks like it’s digging into her skin and is starting to turn red.
“Stop trying to talk, it’ll just cause the muzzle to dig into your cheeks. If you struggle too hard, it can break the skin.” She gives him a look. “What? You think with a quirk like mine that I never got muzzled? If you relax your jaw it’ll be the most comfortable. That model is high tech, it can sense the tension in your jaw and throat.” He watches her attempt to relax her jaw before turning back around to face forward.
He slouches down in his seat settles in for the ride and prays that he doesn’t have to deal with that woman again any time soon.
If only fate were so kind to him. At every crime scene for the next week, that woman is there asking the same question. He can’t even escape her at his other jobs. Every time he goes in or out of UA she is there, ready to follow him and harass him with the same question.
Why that hair style?
She is even waiting outside his radio show when he comes out and he wants to groan and collapse to the ground in a pile sleeping bag comfort like his husband is known to do.
After two weeks, other pro-heroes have noticed the trend and have started poking fun at him. Any time he teams up with another pro for a take down, they try and coax him into answering the question.
By the end of three weeks it’s a meme. He sees compilations of him booking it away from her. There are theory videos about the significance behind his hair. He’s even trending on twitter.
The first listener to call into his radio show and ask him the dreaded question hears a very long groan as Yamada Hizashi sinks out of his chair and onto the floor. One of his techs has to come in to put on some music so they don’t have radio silence while Hizashi rocks under his desk.
At the beginning of the fourth week, his Husband Aizawa Shota is laughing at him as he adamantly refuses to leave their apartment. Shota is not normally one to want to do anything, but he also never backs out on plans. If he says he is going to do something, he is going to do it. After a couple hours of coaxing, the normally tired man manages to get him out of the house in casual clothes to get drinks with the other teachers from UA.
It’s there, sitting with his peers that the dreaded discussion comes up again. They had been graciously avoiding the topic for the past few hours until All Might brings it up.
“So why are you avoiding that reporter woman’s questions about your hair?” The traitor of a man asks him.
Hizashi simply groans as Nemuri and Shota begin to snicker.
“It’s because our dear Hizashi doesn’t have the nerve to tell the poor woman that it’s a science experiment.” Nemuri tells the man.
“Its more like a bet.” Shota adds.
“I hate you.” Hizashi mumbles.
“No, you don’t.” Nemuri teases. He throws a dumpling at her head that she catches in her mouth.
“What exactly does that mean?” All Might asks him. Hizashi is far too self-aware to think that if he doesn’t tell the number one hero, that one of his friends won’t in his place.
“Well, Nemuri, Sho, and I went to High School together with another friend of ours. Him and I realized that at some point Sho’s hair would be too long to fly up when he uses his quirk. We thought to ourselves that we could totally get our hair to stand up straight at a longer length than Sho could, so we have been trying to find the terminal mass of hair being able to stick up straight for…what? 17 years at this point.” He tells the man. The sheer ridiculousness of the ongoing bet/experiment bringing a slight blush to his face.
“Is your other friend still holding strong in this bet?” All Might asks and Hizashi tries to not feel offended. He didn’t know.
Hizashi can feel the mood at the table growing somber as the other teachers— who know of Oboro’s fate— wait for his reply.
“No, he lost 16 years ago.” He gives himself a cold smirk. “my hair is two feet off my head and his is six feet underground.” Hizashi can feel Shota wince and he’ll have to remember to apologize to him later. “Sho had to start over because all his hair got burned off a couple years ago, but I’m still going strong.”
He had to swallow down the urge to cry as he stared down at his hands. He clenched and unclenched them, watching a third hand snake into his vision and take one of his own. He followed it back to Shota’s face and found a pained look on his face. He held his husband’s hand in both of his before turning back to All Might.
“I think it’s time that we head home for the night. See you all tomorrow.” He pushes back from the table and gathers his things.
Retaking Shota’s hand, he exits the restaurant and heads home for the day.
The next day, while making his way to UA, he encounters the persistent woman again. She doesn’t say anything to him, just holds out her microphone to him with a hopeful look in his eye. He sighs before walking over to her. She seems to perk up at this new development and has the camera man next to her, train his camera on him.
He leans into the microphone slightly.
“Listen, Listener. There are multiple reasons I wear my hair like this. Almost all of them come from a very sad part of my life and are very personal too me. I don’t feel comfortable sharing that information with the public, just last night I told some of my co-workers and managed to make thee All Might lose his smile. It’s not a pretty story and no one should have to hear it.” He tells her. “Can you accept that?”
“I think the public can accept that. Although, you did say there were multiple reasons, are there any of the others you can tell us?” She asks him. She pushes the microphone closer to his face, forcing him to jerk back.
“Well it dates back to when I was in high school, it was kind of an experiment of sorts. Like a physics project.” He starts to ramble about the physics behind keeps his hair up the way it is. Getting more and more excited as he continues. “…I think my girlfriend thought I was crazy, she probably still does.”
“Is she still your girlfriend?” She asks.
“No, I’m married.” Hizashi stops. He had responded on instinct and his eyes blow wide as he realizes the shit storm that is headed his way. “Oh, I’m so dead.” He whispers.
“Will your wife be angry at you for revealing that she exists?” He missed the hungry glint in the reporter’s eyes and responds on instinct again, letting the panic take over his brain.
“My husband doesn’t give a shit; My agency is going to kill me!” Not even realizing the information he has revealed, Hizashi turns to make his way into the school. “I need to call them before you air that, because I know there is nothing, I could do to make you not air that footage.”
To say he is in deep shit, would be an understatement. His agency was furious with him and Shota looked like he wanted to laugh every time Hizashi got a new call with someone screaming at him.
The video had been up on the news before school had even started for the day. By the time the day ended, Hizashi was once again trending on twitter but this people were demanding to know his orientation. He got permission from his agency before retweeting a post about under representation of Bi people in the media with the message ‘Well, now you’ve got one more!’
They went wild over it.
After three days of weathering the storm, All Might approached him at work to ask.
“Who is your husband?”
Hizashi had been tempted to slam his head into a wall, but had settled for pulling Shota in for a kiss.
