Work Text:
“Sabito,” the name came out followed by a heavy sigh, making the boy in question lower his camera slightly. Looking at his boyfriend, Sabito pressed his lips together in a thin line to force back a small, amused smile when his gaze met deep blue eyes veiled slightly with annoyance.
Feeling like messing with his partner a little more, he simply responded with a soft hum, cocking his head to the side innocently. Unsurprisingly, Giyuu just rolled his eyes in response. “Don’t play dumb now. We’re supposed to study for our exams. Put the camera away.” Giyuu reminded him- voice slightly laced with exasperation as he had scolded Sabito already two times in about an hour and a half.
Sabito let out a soft whine in response, just like he had done when Giyuu brought up their exams the first two times. “This stuff is too boring, I can’t focus.” he protested, placing his camera down on the table and casually tapping on it with his fingers. His eyes slowly followed a stray lock of Giyuu’s hair as it got free from his messy ponytail, delicately dropping on the side of his boyfriend’s face.
“You’re not even trying to focus,” Giyuu shot back, twirling a pen slowly around his fingers, eyes still stuck on the book he was studying. Sabito groaned inwardly at himself because he just couldn’t believe how he found something as simple as that attractive just because his boyfriend was doing it.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he heard a scoff and a mocking “whipped” spoken in a honeyed voice that sounded a little too much like that of his older adoptive sister, Makomo. He could only be thankful she was not there to tease him mercilessly in front of Giyuu.
“It’s not my fault,” having no intention of spending even another second sitting at the table in a futile attempt to study, he decided to push a little further with his teasing, hoping that Giyuu would give up as well and pay attention to him instead. “Your pretty face is way too distracting,” he declared, a victorious grin spreading on his lips as Giyuu seemed to be quite taken aback by such comment, the pen he was twirling dropping from his fingers and rolling on the table until it reached Sabito's book.
“No.” Giyuu replied, narrowing his eyes at Sabito as the peach haired boy took his pen, handing it back to him with a cheeky grin.
“What?” he asked, attempting to feign innocence although his eyes were gleaming mischievously. “I mean it. You’re attractive- why else do you think I’m dating you?” he teased, ducking his head out of the way when Giyuu chucked an eraser at him in protest.
“How would I know? I’m too busy trying to understand why I’m dating you.” Giyuu retorted, crossing his arms over his chest and staring at Sabito. He barely managed to hold back an amused snort when the other dramatically placed a hand over his chest and gasped in mock offence.
“I’ll have you know that there are hundreds of people who would die to be in your place!” he responded, lifting his chin up haughtily and averting his gaze from Giyuu, trying to sell the part of the affronted lover.
Giyuu, however, was not impressed and simply went back to his book. “Whatever makes you sleep at night, Sabito.” he simply said as he moved a strand of his hair behind his ear slowly. He knew very well that if he played along, even slightly, to Sabito’s antics they would seriously end up getting nothing done at all.
Sabito puffed out his cheeks in response, turning back to Giyuu and taking the camera back in his hands. “Come on! Can we take a break from studying today?” he whined, although he was aware that they barely worked at all, to begin with. He conveniently ignored that little detail. “Let’s go for a walk, the park shouldn't be that crowded at this hour of the day. Please?” he batted his lashes slowly at Giyuu, a gesture that went completely unnoticed by the other. He let out an exaggerated sigh, leaning against the back of his chair. "I'm going to die of boredom here! Free me!" he begged dramatically, but not even that got a reaction out of Giyuu.
With a huff, Sabito lifted his camera from the table, holding it in his hands and pointing it at his lover and when the sound of the shutter filled the room, Giyuu lifted his head slowly to look at Sabito with a confused frown etched on his – “ethereal”, Sabito quietly added in his mind – face.
“I just took your mugshot,” Sabito offered as an explanation, keeping up his offended expression- though a grin was fighting hard to get a place on his lips. “Since you decided to take part in my untimely death by keeping me here.” he finished.
“Have I ever told you you’re absurdly obnoxious?” Giyuu pinched the bridge of his nose before rubbing one of his eyes.
Sabito barely heard him, his attention completely captured by the photo he just took, not believing how Giyuu could look so effortlessly handsome in every single moment of the day. There he was, with a focused expression, a messy ponytail and a pen caught between his thin, rosy lips and yet, somehow, he still managed to look like he came out of a magazine cover.
They had started dating when they were around 17 and years after that, at now 21 years old, Sabito was still infuriatingly weak for Giyuu’s pretty face and bright doe eyes, his heart doing cartwheels whenever Giyuu showed him one of his gentle, loving smiles and butterflies fluttering in his stomach at each tender kiss or touch.
He smiled inwardly as he thought of the numerous times he had accused Giyuu of having turned him into a soft loser, which never failed to make his boyfriend snort adorably before shutting him up with a kiss.
Without realising it, Sabito had ended up getting too caught up in his thoughts, and Giyuu was definitely not pleased about it- so he kicked Sabito’s shin under the table.
With a yelp, the peach haired boy snapped out of his reverie, looking up at Giyuu with a shocked look in his eyes. “What was that for?” he whined, reaching down to rub the spot Giyuu had just hit.
“You were ignoring me,” Giyuu shrugged in response, closing his book and slowly pulled off his hair tie, hair falling past his shoulders in such a strangely enticing way that made Sabito almost go back to daydreaming. “Do you want to go for a walk or not?”
A grin spread immediately on Sabito’s face and he bolted out of his chair, jogging around the table to throw himself at Giyuu. “I knew you’d eventually see reason!” he exclaimed as he hugged Giyuu, holding his head against his chest. “I was about to explode, honestly,” he stated and reached for his boyfriend's hands, pulling him out of his chair before tugging him close to his chest again.
“Where do you even find all of that energy?” Giyuu asked. To anybody else, he would have sounded irritated, displeased, but not to Sabito. He could tell he was just teasing; he could hear the fondness in his voice.
To him, the seemingly aloof boy was an open book. He knew very well how to navigate his words and expressions to find his unyielding devotion behind his – often accidentally – blunt remarks and flat silences.
They knew each other like the backs of their hands, the result of having spent nearly every day together since they first met when they were children.
Sabito secretly found it poetic how they possessed what the other lacked, balancing each other out perfectly. Sabito tended to be more impulsive, pushing Giyuu forward without hesitation whenever the latter got way too into his head due to his overthinking habit. Giyuu, on the other hand, was poised, controlled, reining in Sabito’s rash behaviour to make sure he didn’t get in trouble.
They fit together perfectly, like pieces of a puzzle.
“Not that I believe in all that sappy shit, but... I really feel like we’re soulmates or something like that.” Sabito had uttered those words to Giyuu one night as they were cuddling, happily cocooned under layers of warm blankets, and he swore he could still feel the curve of Giyuu's smile pressing against the skin of his neck. From the way his lover had laced their fingers together that time, squeezing his hand tightly, Sabito knew he felt the same way.
Gazing lovingly at his still mildly disgruntled lover, Sabito simply pulled him into a quick, soft kiss, thumbs tracing the line of Giyuu’s cheekbones lovingly.
Giyuu’s slender fingers wrapped around his wrist, holding them gently to keep Sabito’s hands on his cheeks even after they broke the kiss. “Mh... don’t play cute with me now, I still think you’re insufferable.” he quipped, brushing the tips of their noses together for a moment.
Sabito’s grin melted into a much softer smile, squishing Giyuu’s cheeks gently. “You’re such a liar,” he accused him, stealing another quick kiss from his boyfriend’s lips. “Now, stop complaining and let’s go for this much needed walk.” he placed his hands on Giyuu’s shoulders to push him forward in the direction of their front door, grabbing his camera from the table as they walked past it.
“What do you need that for?” Giyuu asked, eyeing the camera as he was putting on his coat and shoes.
Sabito glanced up at him as he was putting the camera strap around his neck. “Taking pictures of you, obviously.” he pointed out. “So that when you’ll be all old and ugly, with wrinkles all over your face, I can look back to these pictures and remember why I started dating you.” he added, a playful grin on his lips.
In response to his comment, Giyuu reached out and slapped Sabito’s chest. “Bold of you to assume I’d put up with you until we’re old.” he shot back, voice flat as he opened the front door. “It’s very likely that I’ll strangle you with that strap sooner than that.”
Sabito was about to pretend to be offended again, but the last statement made him snort in amusement. “Don’t threaten me with a good time, Giyuu.” he purred, letting out a loud laugh at the disbelieving look Giyuu gave him.
“Where do I even get the patience to deal with you?” Giyuu asked, crossing his arms over his chest and letting Sabito wrap an arm around his shoulders.
“I suppose it comes from the deep, unconditioned love you have for me.” Sabito suggested, squeezing Giyuu’s shoulder and leaning closer to press a gentle kiss against his cheek before moving his mouth closer to his ear. “Plus, when we’re alone in the bedroom-“ he started, but Giyuu pushed him away mid-sentence, effectively cutting him off.
“One more word and we're breaking up.” Giyuu threatened, interrupting him, and Sabito laughed again, attracting the attention of random people on the street who turned to look at them, but Sabito didn’t care as he took a hold of his boyfriend’s hand, pulling him close to his side again.
“Yeah, I love you too,” he chuckled against his boyfriend’s black hair, pressing a kiss there.
Despite the way he sighed, Giyuu twisted his hand in Sabito's hold to gently link their fingers together, rubbing Sabito’s knuckles with his thumb as they walked down the street.
They chatted idly as they made their way to the park, teasing each other as usual and ending every round of playful banter with a kiss.
Honestly, the feeling of Giyuu’s lips curving against his own in a tiny, content smile made Sabito glad he had – for the most part – grew out of his tough-guy act and allowed himself to be a little soft at times. At least with his boyfriend.
Once they reached their destination, Sabito eagerly tugged on Giyuu’s hand, jogging towards the swings and dragging the other along. “It’s so quiet here at this time of the day,” he said, sighing contently. “It’s nice not having to fight a stupid brat to get on the swings.” he added with a grin, starting to push himself back and forth slowly using his feet.
Giyuu stood in front of Sabito with his hands shoved in the pockets of his coat, eyeing him silently before scoffing. “You talk big for someone who would jump off a cliff for a child.” he pointed out, nudging his leg with his foot.
Sabito huffed in response to that. “I’d jump off a cliff to put an end my suffering. Children are annoying as fuck, please.” he clicked his tongue, stopping the swing and moving his arms on Giyuu’s waist, pulling him closer.
“Right. As if I’ve never seen you interacting with the Kamado kids. You adore them.” Giyuu said, easily calling his bluff- as usual, of course.
If Sabito wanted to deny everything, the will to protest abandoned him the moment Giyuu’s fingers started combing through his messy, peach-coloured strands. He rested his forehead against his boyfriend’s chest. “Don’t tell that to anybody, though. I have a reputation to uphold.” Sabito whispered, hands caressing Giyuu’s sides.
“What reputation? We all know you suck,” Giyuu teased lightly, holding Sabito’s head against his chest. “The fact that you’re good with kids might actually save your image.” he mused outloud before dropping a kiss on top of his head, smiling a little as he heard the other snort in amusement.
“Look at him. He’s got jokes now.” Sabito smirked lazily at him, squeezing his slim waist – with which Sabito may or may not have been a little obsessed – before letting go of him so he could get off the swing.
“I’m full of surprises. That’s part of my charm.” Giyuu stated as he brushed a few darks locks off his face as the gentle wind that was blowing kept pushing them in front of his eyes.
Sabito watched him struggling with his hair, fond amusement in his eyes, and then he turned on his camera as he wanted to capture that moment too despite Giyuu’s protests. “If you didn’t want me to take so many photos of you, you shouldn’t have been this good-looking in the first place.” Sabito remarked, matter-of-factly, humming in appreciation as he examined the photo he just took.
“Didn’t you want to go for a walk?” Giyuu muttered, lifting his leg to push Sabito forward with his foot. “More walking and less talking.”
“You’re so bossy today. Keep up this energy when we’re back home too, please and thank you.” Sabito chirped, trying to steal a kiss from Giyuu’s lips but he was stopped by the other’s hand against his mouth, pushing his face away.
“No more kisses for you. You’re awful.” Giyuu grumbled, pinching his nose before taking a step back. “Now let’s go for a walk before I actually end up kicking your ass.” He dictated, looping their elbows together and using his other hand to hold his arm.
Sabito was holding back a laugh, and he was sure Giyuu could tell by the way he squeezed his arm, side-eyeing him in a silent warning to stop being an idiot.
Not that Sabito was intimidated by it- if anything, it only made him want to mess more with his boyfriend. Which he did, naturally, and they ended up chasing each other around the park at some point, with Sabito’s loud laugh filling the air, breaking the quiet of the park, and despite how annoyed with him Giyuu swore he was, Sabito could see him smile as he ran after him, trying to catch him by the back of his coat.
None of them was sure of how long they had run around like that, laughing without a care in the world and provoking each other childishly to keep up their silly little game.
When they eventually collapsed on the first bench they found, chuckling breathlessly and pushing each other’s shoulders lazily, they were both panting heavily.
“You’re such an idiot,” Giyuu was the first to speak up when he managed to even out his breathing, the smile on his face revealing the fondness in his words.
“Maybe. But you go along with my bullshit, so what does that make you?” Sabito grinned at him, curious to see how Giyuu would respond.
However, Giyuu decided to not give Sabito the satisfaction of dragging him into another round of playful bickering, because to his surprise Giyuu simply lifted his head, blue eyes watching the sky as it was gradually getting painted by warm tones of orange and yellow with the sun slowly setting, and in the softest, warmest tone he whispered, “Very much in love.”
That successfully broke Sabito for a few seconds longer than he liked to admit.
It certainly wasn’t the first time Giyuu told him he loved him, but it was the way he had said it. It sounded like being in love with him was the most natural thing in the world, like it was just meant to be. An absolute truth that they both recognised as such.
He must have been staring at his boyfriend long enough to elicit a soft giggle from the black-haired man. Then came the feeling of cold fingertips pressing under his chin, making him close his mouth since, apparently, the surprise had been so much that his jaw had gone slack.
“What’s with that face? We’ve been together for like, four years, Sabito. I thought you knew I was in love with you by now.” he teased, delighted when Sabito’s cheeks turned rosy, matching the hue of his hair.
“Fuck off, don’t ruin the moment!” Sabito complained, grasping the hand Giyuu had under his chin, holding it in both of his own to warm it up. “That was so sweet, damn it. I wanted to mess with you and you just... decided to hit me straight in the face with feelings and I went completely stupid.” he groaned. After he said that, he noticed the playful look in Giyuu’s eyes so he immediately cut him off before he could have a chance to speak up. “Don’t you dare say that I’m always stupid.”
Giyuu had to cover his mouth with the back of his free hand, forcing a laugh back as he shook his head slowly. “You are though. But, you know... I sort of like that about you.” he said softly, leaning forward to press their foreheads together.
Sabito huffed, but he couldn’t find it in himself to be displeased at all by the statement, as proved by the way he lifted Giyuu’s hand up to his lips to press a kiss against his palm. “Don’t act like we’re not both absolute fucking morons, Giyuu.” he mumbled against the skin of his palm. “We’re so good together because we share one very, very faulty brain cell.”
“How romantic, Sabito. You should write that on the next Valentine’s Day card.” Giyuu joked, taking advantage of the lack of people around to sit in his boyfriend’s lap, wanting to be closer to him before looking back up at the darkening sky.
Sabito placed his chin on his shoulder, taking in a deep breath and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. He could hear the wind blowing through the trees, gentle enough to just shake the branches and lightly tousle their hair. He felt content, complete. He felt at home even in the middle of the park because his Giyuu was there with him.
“You know,” Sabito started, smile softening when Giyuu looked back at him again, his blue eyes curious, focused on hearing whatever Sabito had to say. “You rarely sound sure and confident when you say something, except when you say you love me.” he pointed out. Giyuu often came off as dismissive, indecisive or hesitant, but that never happened when their relationship or their feelings were being discussed.
“It’s because you are the only thing I’m sure of in my life.” Giyuu admitted, tracing Sabito’s features with a finger. “You make me feel... safe and grounded. When I get trapped into my own head and I get doubtful, confused... you’re always there, somehow, and you take my hand and lead me out of that mess and back to reality." he whispered softly, voice shaking for a moment with emotion before Giyuu covered that by clearing his throat. "I joke a lot about finding you insufferable and all that but, really, I wouldn’t last a day without you.” his hand gently cupped Sabito’s cheek. “So, yeah. Of course I’m never unsure when it comes to you. I truly do love you.”
Sabito listened to Giyuu’s words, savouring them, burning them forever into his mind so he could replay them over and over again in the future. It was nice, feeling so wanted, so loved. To Giyuu – his beautiful, darling Giyuu, the light of his life – he was important, and that was all that truly mattered to Sabito.
“Yeah, I know what you mean, ‘Yuu,” he told him, leaning into his touch, basking in its tenderness. “Because I feel the same way, too. No matter what happens, as long as I have you by my side, I’ll be able to stay strong in the face of anything.” he whispered, a loving look in his eyes as he stared up at Giyuu.
“I’m not going anywhere, Sabito,” Giyuu promised him, his thumb running over his bottom lip for a moment before he leaned down to kiss him slowly. He was pouring all of his feelings in that kiss, in the gentle, feather-light way he touched his face, shoulders, chest.
Sabito’s arms were wrapped securely around Giyuu’s waist, moved by the need to keep him as close as possible. He felt like his feelings were overflowing, filling him with the need to share them with Giyuu, to let him know about them.
Thankfully his lover was very receptive of them, accepting them eagerly, drinking up every drop of love and affection Sabito was giving him.
They kissed and kissed for God knows how long, quiet and breathless ‘I love you’s exchanged against each other’s lips until their lungs were burning, forcing them to pull away to breathe.
Giyuu pressed his face in the crook of his neck, breathing against his skin and nuzzling him like a kitten would, making Sabito smile fondly at the feeling. Giyuu was too cute, and he sure was weak for cute boys.
He noticed Giyuu’s fingers touching the camera at some point and he reached down to cover his hand with his own. “Wanna know why I take pictures basically all the time?” he found himself asking, spurred by the soft, intimate atmosphere around them.
Giyuu simply nodded against his neck, playing with his fingers casually.
“Every single moment I spend with you feels special, important. I hate the idea that, with time, some of these days together will become a fuzzy memory at best. I know it’s silly, I know we can’t possibly remember every single day of our lives... but you know I’m a stubborn idiot, and I’m willing to try anyway because we are worth a try.” Sabito explained, holding his hand tightly.
“I wish to remember every moment with you, no matter how happy, sad or seemingly unimportant that is. Every second with you feels special, feels like something that must be treasured at all costs.” he finished, bringing his eyes back on Giyuu’s face.
He found those beautiful blue eyes glossy with unshed tears, a heartfelt smile on his reddened face, and that sight made Sabito’s heart swell in his chest.
“Who gave you the right to be so damn sweet and romantic, Sabito?” Giyuu whispered, a breathy chuckle bubbling in his throat, followed by a sniffle. “I wasn’t planning on crying today.” he said, rubbing his eyes as Sabito smiled and pressed comforting kisses on his shoulder and cheek.
“I can’t say I’m sorry, ‘Yuu." he let out a soft chuckle against Giyuu’s cheek. "I adore you. Our relationship means the world to me so I have to let you know exactly how I feel.” he told him.
It took Giyuu a moment to regain his composure, teary giggles escaping his mouth as Sabito nuzzled his neck to tickle him.
Once he managed to pull himself together, he offered Sabito a warm smile before hugging him tightly, one of his hands gripping his peach locks gently.
Sabito rubbed Giyuu’s back slowly, pressing kisses against the side of his head, feeling himself falling in love with him all over again every single minute.
Suddenly, the silence between them was broken by Sabito’s amused cackle. “Why did we suddenly get so fucking sappy? Ew. Disgusting. Can we go back to roast each other?” he joked, laughing more when Giyuu tugged on his hair in protest before he, too, cracked up.
“Damn it Sabito! You're the one ruining the moment now!” Giyuu let out between fits of giggles, trying to sound or at the very least look crossed but he just couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.
And so they sat there on that bench for God knows how long, the sky changing colour yet again as evening arrived while they were busy holding each other. They laughed gleefully, their hearts full with the love they poured in each other, creating a new memory that they would make sure to carry with them, in their hearts and minds, forever.
