Work Text:

Izuku felt weird.

He couldn’t figure it out as he brushed his teeth, put on his uniform, and set off for U.A. High School. He couldn’t figure it out as he walked through the giant halls, or when he walked into Classroom 1-A, or when he said “Hi” to Uraraka, or when he sat behind Kacchan-

Oh.

Oh no.

No , no.

His mini panic attack did not go by unnoticed.

“What’s up with you today, Deku?” came the rough rumble in front of him as Kacchan turned his head towards Izuku.

“W-What? Oh, nothing!” he stuttered and laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.

He cleared his throat and took out his hero analysis notebook and jotted down notes that he forgot to add for today’s face-off. It was between Mt. Lady and a criminal with a Gigantification quirk, like hers. He found it interesting how differently the two quirk users used the same quirk.

His train of thought was cut off by Mr. Aizawa opening the door and greeting the class.

As everyone else greeted him, Izuku saw that Kacchan was staring at him intently, as if he were trying to figure something out. His face flushed. He was confused, but embarrassed nonetheless at the sudden attention.

Kacchan turned away with a “hmph” and the sound made his stomach flutter. Stop that! he screamed internally, but kept his face neutral.

This was going to be a long day.

After lunch, Izuku was somewhat relieved to have PE as the last class of the day. He put on his uniform and firmly averted his gaze when he turned around and saw Kacchan throwing his shirt in the locker, his firm back muscles on display.

He briskly walked out and took out his phone. They were allowed to play music during their warm ups. He played a random song he had saved on his list, then froze when the familiar rock intro played. It might help you with your feelings, his mind spoke.

He sighed at the nostrum and sat, placing his phone down. He stretched his legs and hummed as the verses played.

“All the feelings that I get...” he murmured out loud, getting lost in the lyrics.

He thought he heard the reply behind him, “but I still don’t miss you yet,” but he might’ve just said it in his head.

“Only when I stop to think about it, I hate everything about you.” Memories of Kacchan during his early childhood to middle school flickered in his head.

Then, the rare moments of Kacchan’s true personality branded themselves in his eyes. His grief and worry during their fight earlier in the year, his determination to play the drums for the class. These little moments made Izuku’s heart speed up.

“Why do I love you?” he whispered out loud and opened his eyes- when had he closed them?- to see Kacchan standing in front of him, stunned.

Izuku’s eyes widened, horrified at revealing his new feelings. There was only the sounds of random conversations from their classmates and the damned song still playing.

How was he going to get out of this mess?
