A Second Life Starts Now

Summary:

Mia and Lana's wedding.

Work Text:

Mia had to tip her head up to avoid crying.

Ema stood beside Lana, wearing a simple blue dress that fell just below her knees, and her hand darted out like lightning to squeeze her sister’s before returning to her side. Ema didn't stress about wedding as seriously as her elder sibling did - she supposed it was warranted, as it wasn't her wedding. She took her role as the maid of honor in stride the way she did everything else - precise, prepared, and bossing Klavier around, making sure that he wouldn't get the song he was supposed to play for the reception wrong. Even Lana had loosened up at that - " You're probably gonna marry Kay, one day, Em - don't ruin your chances for a free musician." " When I marry Kay, i'm not gonna hire someone with his initial on a necklace to serenade her."

Maya wore a soft - looking purple dress and gave a quick thumbs up, sticking her tongue out to the side and winking. Maya still looked like a little kid- but, nowadays, she wouldn't cry about a broken urn. She'd break something else to 'cancel it out', and laugh it off. Mia herself laughed off her nerves now- she was happy here, in a suit, eyes off of her soon-to-be wife, worried that if she looked any longer , she'd break some wedding custom and doom the ceremony. Maya was busy when she looked back again, fussing a bee away from her face.

Diego - Godot? - she’d always known him as Diego, wore a midnight suit, and flashed a distinctive half - smile. He looked futuristic with his visor - but in a silly way, like a kid's drawing. It almost made her sad, how harshly life had fallen upon her friends, her family, even her love. But here, that hopelessness turned into serenity, that sadness became happy musings, to the tune of the wind and laughter. Even hurt seemed sweet and sanguine, like a means to an end.

It made Mia feel nostalgic and playful to see how Edgeworth’s lips curled into a smile when Phoenix’s eyes met his from beside her, and shifted his weight to be further behind Lana. They clearly weren't the only lovestruck pair on the altar today; and Mia wouldn't have it any other way.

She softly dipped her chin and turned her head to look at the benches, bathed in sunlight and shade. Marvin threw an enthusiastic wave from the front pew. He was never ready for anything - too late to bed, too restless in sleep, sleeping through his alarms. The back of her mentor's shirt was untucked while the front was bunched, his hair messed in the wind, and she was sure that she wouldn't be able to stop laughing once he figured out that the glasses he fumbled for were on his head. On the other side of the bench, Pearl seemed to be nearly bouncing around in her seat, only grounded by Trucy’s hand in hers - it was hard to imagine Phoenix, the sneezing boy with an ugly sweater she had met all those years ago, as a father. But Trucy was there, and had pulled a bouquet out of her hat for her just hours before - Pearl had been praying for luck then, hands clasped and eyes closed.

Kay’s eyes shined with mirth - was she crying, or was that just a trick of the light? She kicked her legs until they rested on the pew in front of her, smirking with a glint to her smile as her heel tapped Gumshoe's head. Gumshoe was both unaware and certainly crying, with Maggey beside him, a kind smile on her face as her boyfriend leaned all over her. Athena was tugging on Apollo’s arm, excitedly muttering to her best friend. Apollo, on the other hand, seemed to be alternating between shushing her and responding to her comments. Mia wondered if Phoenix saw himself in his students how she had seen herself in him. She snuck another look at Lana, who was wiping a tear.

On the other side of the isle, Franziska pulled at her whip. She didn’t look happy, nor emotional, but a smile toyed on her eyes rather than her lips. It wasn't hard to see if you knew what to look for - teeth peeking from between lips, quirking eyebrows. Klavier tapped the edge of a paper in his hands, no doubt the song he had been writing for the occasion. His guitar was somewhere inside , and Mia knew he'd be making a beeline for it the moment the ceremony was over. He was, above all, a performer, from the courtroom to the stage, and he would stop at nothing to make their first dance perfect.

As Mia’s eyes scanned to see Sebastian in the chairs as well, she couldn’t help but feel her heart swell with pride - Lana had come so close to losing everything, but she had built herself back up. She glowed with an unimaginable light, tendrils reaching for Mia in the breeze. Lace wrapped around arms and body, cradling her in white. Beyond her veil, there was a smile - the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The officiant opened his mouth.

“ You may now kiss the bride.”
