Work Header

from the deep sea of terror to the burning flames of envy

Summary:

bakugou katsuki is midoriya izuku’s best friend. sometimes he can’t accept that others are coming into midoriya’s life, though.

Work Text:

midoriya limped through the door of the dorm rooms, face practically black and blue as blood dripped from his nose and cracked lips.

bakugou immediately sprung up, along with shinsou and asui, making him glare at them for a split second. “deku! what the hell happened?!”

midoriya perked up at his voice and stumbled towards him. “oh... i got into a fight... i guess.”

“by that you mean someone people who saw the sports festival ended up recognizing you and then beat the shit out of you?” shinsou translated, to which midoriya nodded hesitantly.

“kero, midoriya, let’s get you patched up.” asui suggested.

“oh, don’t waste your time on useless things. kacchan will probably end up forcing me to do it, so you don’t have to because it might be a waste of your time.” midoriya said, both teens already shaking their head.

“no, no. we want to.” shinsou insisted. midoriya looked to bakugou, who huffed and shrugged. “extras will be extras.” he grunted.

midoriya looked back at them and nodded. “okay. kacchan likes to go into mom mode, though, and he’ll end up cooking me katsudon, patching up my wounds, k—“

“shut. the fuck. UP.” bakugou let explosions crackle from his palms.

“oops.” midoriya didn’t look sorry in the slightest. “overshared. sorry.”

he limped towards the elevator, where they’d relocate to midoriya’s room, and bakugou followed. he wondered why these other two extras kept tagging along with them.

he and midoriya never had anyone else, just eachother. why did it change? why did shinsou and asui insist on being in their life? why why why? why couldn’t he be the only one midoriya chose to lean on?!

he didn’t like shinsou or asui, but he was thankful that they weren’t bullies. he wasn’t sure if this was better than bullies, though.

he watched as midoriya and uraraka sparred, uraraka trying her best not to let midoriya’s palms touch her and him constantly reassuring her that he wouldn’t take her quirk. he essentially fought quirkless, due to the massive advantage and also her fear of his quirk.

she didn’t win, but she came close when she pulled the same stuff she did on bakugou in the sports festival. midoriya’s head bled heavily and a black eye began to form. he swiped his arm under his nose, wiping away blood as he stood up dazedly.

she smirked, charging at him confidently. he dodged— just barely—- and pinned her down on the ground by pressing his elbow against the arch of her back and pulling her right arm back.

“ghhk—?!” she strained her neck to look back at him, making sure none of his palms were touching her.

“get.. off of me...” she panted. “monster.”

his gaze darkened and dropped her arm, standing up. “good match uraraka-san. thank you for sparring with me.” he bowed to her, walking away and leaving her on the ground to catch her breath and compose herself.

he walked to bakugou. “monster.” he repeated to him. “that’s what she called me. i’m a monster to her.” he sighed shakily, hugging bakugou.

“you need to tell that damn caterpillar, you’re gonna break one day idiot.” he huffed, wrapping his arms around midoriya in a protective sort of way. out of the corner of his eye, he saw shinsou glaring at uraraka, along with aizawa.

maybe he had heard her call midoriya a monster? it wouldn’t be the first time. shinsou definitely overheard their conversation, which bakugou could do without.

he wanted to be the only one midoriya leaned on.

“alright, today you’ll be doing an improv piece for who you care about most and sharing it infront of the class.” aizawa announced lazily. “i didn’t come up with this, if it were up to me then i’d be teaching you about quirk discrimination, which some of you obviously need.” he glared towards uraraka and iida.

“midnight will be helping you with this, so-“

“HELLOOO!~” midnight called out, aizawa looking unbothered but annoyed at the interruption. “have fun, i’m taking a nap.”

“i’m here to keep this class in check!” she cackled. “you’ll be doing an improv piece about strong emotions for someone in this class. it can be love, hate, sadness, envy, whatever comes to mind!” she smiled.

“anyone want to go first?”

asui raised her hand and walked to the front of the class.

“kero, midoriya-chan, during the USJ incident you saved me from possible death when aizawa-sensei was down. i owe my life to you, kero, and i know you are a true hero. your quirk doesnt define you, and you will make a great pro. i’m happy i can have this chance to grow alongside you and become a pro with you, kero.” she said, her back slouched and putting a finger to her mouth. “that’s all.”

“thank you, asui-san.”

“call me tsu.”

“thank you, tsu-san.”

“what a heartfelt speech!” midnight smiled. “anyone else?”

bakugou began to tune them out, not bothering to listen unless he heard the mention of midoriya’s name. he was still thinking about what he would say— more so, who he would say. obviously, his first choice is midoriya, but he would get teased by the losers who just follow him.

maybe aizawa? or is that not allowed? he couldn’t think of anyone else in this class worthy of his speech, and midoriya was way too worthy of his affection.

but they’d probably say it has to be a student, so he’d go with the safer option of midoriya. the extras deserve to know how awesome his friend was.

after hagakure was done, he raised his hand and stood up, walking to the podium with a slouch and his hands in his pockets.

“deku.” he said, turning his gaze towards midoriya. “you are the most badass motherfucker, but the stupidest person i have ever fucking met. we met in preschool where i found you trying to eat a centipede because you were curious to see how it fucking tasted like. but SOMEHOW you’ve managed to be my friend for this long, so listen.” he swallowed his anxiety.

“i would walk through the deepest pits of hell for you, and i would walk the world for you. i’d do whatever it meant to keep happiness in your stupid eyes, even if it meant my morals turned a little gray. hell, even if it meant they turned to shit! even if everything went awry, or everything decayed before our eyes. i’ll always be by your side, deku, even if this world falls apart, because you won’t ever be alone when i’m with you. even...” this was getting kind of long, and he could feel the patronizing stares of those who hated midoriya, and the interested stares of those who weren’t familiar with his soft side.

“even if the skies fall and the land crumbles beneath us. even if i can’t reach you in time, just call my name and i’ll be there for you. everything i do is for you. i promise.” bakugou took a shuddering breath. “i promise, yamikumo.”

he tilted his head to the ground and walked to his seat, looking out the window to try and ignore the stares that burned through his skin.

“that...” midnight started. “was so sweet... i think i’m going to cry!” she sniffled.

“you’re not supposed to get emotional.”

“well did you even hear what he said?! midoriya melted bakugou’s cold heart, it’s almost like a fanfiction!”

“never compare my student’s relationship with eachother to a fanfiction ever again.” aizawa opened an eye, gazing over his students reactions.

“is it so surprising that katsuki can be a sweetheart too sometimes?” midoriya asked, poking the bend of bakugou’s back. “he likes to be sappy too.”

“shut the fuck up.”

shinsou’s eyes perked up, remembering something. “did he call you yamikumo?” he asked, staring at midoriya.

“yeah, it’s a special nickname.”

“why?”

“because he made it and only he can use it.”

“what if someone else were to call you that?” kaminari asked.

“one of us would kick you.” he hummed nonchalantly.

“i’m uber curious to find out midoriya’s response!! go midoriya, go!” ashido whined, hitting the table.

midoriya looked up at her and sighed. “alright.” he heaved himself up and ruffled bakugou’s hair as he passed by, leaning against the wall to keep himself from tumbling over.

“katsuki, we’re best friends and have been since you found me eating the centipede, not very good by the way, don’t recommend. you’ve saved me from countless bullies and hundreds of villains, since i seem to attract murderers and burglars all the time.” he shrugged. “and i pretty much am loyal to you for life for that.

you’re the only person in my life that i have seen every single day, and the only person who’s given me kindness and love every single time i’ve seen you. you may think you’re arrogant, rude, and snarky, which you are, but you’re also kind, caring, and the best person i’ve ever met.

so, since you have your sappy declarations, i’ll have mine. i’ll protect you till the ends of the earth, id give the world to you. all you have to do is say the word and everything i get my hands on is yours. from the deep sea of terrors and the scorching flames of envious stares, i’ll always be there to hold your hand and guide you through the depths of each place we end up in. i’m always here for you, and you’re here for me. we’re each others shadow, each other’s smile, the only thing that gets the other to tomorrow.”

he took a deep breath. “because we’re katsuki and izuku, the wonder duo who have been sweeping the world, nation by nation, since [year born].”

bakugou blushed, averting his eyes.

“and just because there are others around me that care about me now, i’ll never leave you for them. i know you’re scared you’ll be alone one day, but i’m your loyal dog, as people in middle school said. we’re best friends, and no one can tear us apart.”

and at that, bakugou’s eyes lit up and he wanted to cry. he buried his face into his arms of tears accidentally did slip, so that no one would see.

mikumo wouldn’t leave him alone. now he was sure he wouldn’t.
he was happy again.
