Secret Admirer

Summary:

Tokoyami & Shouji have both been receiving mysterious love letters everyday for the past couple of weeks both by the same person. Confirming that they haven’t been sending them to each other, they try to find out who this mystery person is.

Notes:

It's like only 8:00 right now & I'm probably gonna regret writing this & posting it on the internet in like 2 hours. Do I care? No, not really.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tokoyami opened the door to his room. A few people in the common room were going to be watching a movie together. Including his new boyfriend Shouji. They had been together for a couple of weeks now, & things were almost perfect.

Walking in, he heard the crumpling sound of paper from under his foot. He looked down, lifting his leg up & away to look at the paper. It was a letter addressed to him in an envelope. A black one too, with some red & dark purple colors around it.

He opened up the letter. A deep red color with dark black ink. At the bottom was a signature.

~ From your secret admirer

His feathers puffed out upon reading the letter. He couldn’t help but smile under his beak. It was from Shouji, no doubt. After all, the letters had begun arriving as soon as the two began dating. He’d have to thank him later when they were in private, as to not embarrass him. Not that he would care, but still. He still felt a bit awkward about showing affection in front of his classmates.

He puts the envelope away in his room on his desk, also getting his phone which was what he was originally looking for. He then returns back to the living area & gets a kiss from his boyfriend as soon as he sits on the couch. Along with the two, Mina, Tsu, Hagakure, Mineta, Ojiro, Staou, & Kouda were there, spread out around the room, still making sure they could all see the television.

Hagakure was the one who picked the movie. It was some cheesy romance movie. Most of them, especially Mina, Hagakure, & Kouda, were staring intently at the movie.

Tokoyami thought it was...okay. Not really his cup of tea. Shouji didn’t seem to care too much as he was enjoying the movie somewhat, so that was all that really mattered to him. He also laughed at how his friends were so fixated on the movie. A few of them even cried towards the end.

The movie finally ended & Tokoyami felt relieved. He’d plan on inviting Shouji over to his room so they could watch a horror movie just to end the night with a more exciting genre.

“Finally!” Dark Shadow yelled out. “We got sick of all that mushy lovey romance goo-goo crap!”

Tokoyami grumbled some curses under his breath, apologizing to everyone for Dark Shadow’s rude behavior.

“I-I mean, romance isn’t for everyone I g-guess,” Kouda shrugged. He actually really enjoyed the movie. Probably more than Hagakure & Mina did. It felt embarrassing to admit, but it was just a movie after all. Nothing bad about admitting it, right?

“I thought it was really sweet!” Mina yelled, hugging her girlfriend as tight as she could. She was still tearing up from the ending. It wasn’t a sad ending, but a really, really happy one. Almost tooth rotting sweet.

“Uh Mina?” Tsu said. “You’re crushing me.”

“Weird,” Mineta said. “I didn’t know frogs can turn blue.”

“We can if we need to breathe...” Tsu mumbled.

Mina quickly let go, flashing her girlfriend with an apologetic smile.

“You two gonna head for the night?” Satou asked, watching as Shouji & Tokoyami got up from the couch & began walking.

“Yeah, we’re gonna watch a horror movie in Fumi’s room,” Shouji said. The two waved their goodbyes before disappearing from the other’s sights.

While walking, they began bringing up topics for their conversations. “By the way,” Shouji said. “I never thanked you for those letters you kept writing to me.”

Tokoyami gave a puzzled look. “Letters I gave to you?” But wasn’t he the one getting letters from Shouji?

Shouji nodded. “Y-yeah. Y’know. The letters? You know you don’t have to keep signing them anonymously. We’re dating anyways.”

“I never wrote such a thing. At least not yet,” Tokoyami admitted. “Besides, aren’t you the one writing those letters to me?”

Now Shouji was confused. “I never wrote you any letters.” This was news to him. Tokoyami has been getting letters too? He’s never written any letters to him, so it can’t be from him.

“In fact, they were also addressed by this anonymous source. A ‘secret admirer’ in fact. Was that not you?”

Shouji shook his head. “No, it hasn’t been,” he admitted.

Finally making it to Tokoyami’s room, the two entered & Tokoyami walked over, handing his boyfriend the random letter that he assumed to come from him. Shouji looked at it confused. They were kind of like how his was written. It was the same writing style. Very romantic & somewhat flirty. Nothing too out there, but it was obviously written with romantic intent & surely not platonically.

It clearly wasn’t written by him, but it did seem to come from the same person. It was really strange. He didn’t really know how to feel about it. Both of them had blushed reading those letters, always getting flustered about it so many times. Both of them were also getting letters from the same person, & they both loved the letters until now. Now they were indifferent about it. The letters were sweet, but they didn’t know who would have a crush on both of them.

“Did they also start showing up a few weeks ago?” Shouji asked, handing him back the letter.

Tokoyami nodded. “Yes. It was one of the main reasons I assumed it to be you. Though, I thought you were just too shy to write letters to me directly.”

“I thought the same thing about my letters.” An awkward silence fell between the two. Neither of the two boys really knew what to say? Do they ignore the letters? Tell someone about it? Maybe they should try to find out who it was. It wasn’t like either of them weren’t open to the idea of a crush. But it would have to be someone they both liked. It was too awkward to talk about though, even if they both discussed said topics before they were in a relationship together.

“So…” Shouji said, rubbing the back of his neck. “W-what now?”

Tokoyami stayed silent for a while. “Well, regarding the letters, I suppose we wait to see what happens as I’m not sure what else we should do. I suppose we can watch a movie until then.”

Shouji nodded. There really wasn’t any other option. Besides, he didn’t want to think about the letters right now. Or talk about it. It felt so awkward.

The two went over to sit on Tokoyami’s bed while he got the movie ready. Neither of them could really focus on it. Which was a shame as it was Tokoyami’s favorite movie. How could they focus though? Both of them had so many questions about it. The movie was over & neither of them noticed until Dark Shadow pointed it out. Shouji decided to sleep in his own room for the night, so the two boyfriends said their goodbyes.

When he got to his dorm, a letter was placed in front of his door. A pastel blue colored envelope with white paper inside. The ink was black, & again, the writing was really nice. It was signed the exact same way as Tokoyami’s letter:

~ From your secret admirer

He groaned, opening the door & closing it behind him, taking the letter inside with him. He read it. The same sweet things as always. Complimenting him & so on. Something that stood out to him about the letter was the contents inside. It was talking about training & how well he did during it. It was weird. Oddly specific too. Not something that just anyone would know about, but also not something that placed the author as a specific person.

He thought for a while. His eyes scanned every line for some indication. Nothing. Great. So no answer, still. He yawned, feeling tired. He should really be getting some sleep now instead of wasting his time pondering who it was. He wasn’t going to find his answer today anyways.

The next morning before class, the two were hovering over Tokoyami’s desk. They were both comparing their letters, trying to find out any clues. Dark Shadow also took part in trying to help the two, looking around the classroom for who it could be.

It had to be someone from their class. No other students are allowed in their building. Unless someone invited someone over. But no one has in the recent weeks. It had to be someone from their class. That left eighteen students. But they should cut it down by a few since there are a few who are interested in exclusively women or are monogamous.

So that took out Midroiya, Ochako, Hagakure, Ojiro, Mineta, Ashido, Tsu, Shoto, Kaminari, Iida Bakugou, & Kirishima. So that left Jirou, Momo, Kouda, Satou, Aoyama, & Sero. Momo & Jirou were both already dating each other & Kaminari though, & neither of them seemed to have expressed any interest in them. Then again, neither did anyone in their class as far as they know. They’d put the two girls into a maybe?

Okay, scratch that, a no. They both knew that the two boys were gay anyways, so they could scratch them out also. So now, it left four boys in their class. Huh. That was easier than they thought.

“Oh hey, what’s that?” Mineta asked, leaning over from his hesk to see what the two were up to. He looked at the two letters.

“You two write secret letters to each other?” he asked.

“Thay do?” Momo asked, leaning over to read them. “Aw, that’s so sweet!”

Shouji covered the desk with his arms, shaking his head. “U-uh no. Actually, we don’t know who they’re from,” he explained.

“So like a secret admirer?” Mineta asked.

“Yeah, exactly that,” Tokoyami answered.

“W-well, whoever is s-sending them…well, those l-letters seems l-like they’re r-romantic...” Kouda said, glancing over at his friends. He looked away from the notebook he was writing in to join the conversation, hands covering the pages.

“Who do you think it is?” asked Todoroki.

The two boys blushed deeply. Why was everyone so interested in their romantic lives? “Well,” Tokoyami began. “We’ve narrowed it down to four of our classmates as we have been receiving those letters in our dorm building in front of our rooms.”

“Who are these four?” Momo asked.

“Satou, Aoyama, Sero, & Kouda,” Shouji said.

Kouda’s head shot up upon hearing his name. He quickly slammed his notebook shut & began fidgeting. Thankfully, no one seemed to have noticed his actions, still trying to figure out who it was.

“Hey Satou, you wouldn’t happen to be the one writing these, would you?” Shouji asked.

Satou shook his head. “Nope, sorry.” He said it so casually & genuine. So, that crosses him out.

“So then that leaves three people,” Mineta said, looking at Kouda. “Oh hey, what about you?” he asked.

The rock boy’s head quickly shot up, staring at them all. “M-me, what?” he asked.

“You know, about the letters. You are one of the suspects after all,” Mineta joked.

Kouda furiously shook his head. Well, there was their answer. So that left either Sero or Aoyama. Luckily, Sero was right in front of Tokoyami so it was easy to ask him. The tape teen was listening to music on his headphones. He probably didn’t hear the conversation.

Dark Shadow reached over to pat his shoulder. Sero took out his headphones & turned around. “Hm?”

“You the secret admirer?” Dark Shadow asked.

“Secret Admirer?” he asked.

“You’re on the list.”

“There’s a list?”

“What Dark Shadow means is that me & Shouji are trying to narrow down who in this class has been secretly sending us letters of affection. You & Aoyama are the only ones on our list,” the bird explained.

“Did somebody call moi~ ” Aoyama asked, scooting over to the group of students.

“Yeah, they’re talking about a love letter,” Mineta said.

“Are either of you the ones who wrote them?” Shouji asked.

“I’m flattered you two would think that but unfortunately, it has to be a ‘no’ from me,” The blonde said. “You see, the only one who has managed to catch my heart is myself!”

“So that leaves Sero,” Todorki said.

“Sorry dudes, but it ain’t me either,” Sero said.

“Really?” Tokoyami asked.

“No offense, but just not interested in you two.”

“None taken,” Shouji said, looking back at the letters. That meant one of two things. Someone from another class has been sneaking into the dorms at night, or someone in their class was lying. But who?

“Hm, what a mad banquet of darkness…” Tokoyami muttered under his breath.

“Agreed,” Shouji said.

Neither of them could discuss the issue any further as Aizawa had now shown up, ready to teach the class. Everyone rushed to their desks, allowing the long lecture to begin.

After class, the two both discovered letters in front of their rooms, once again. It was killing them for not knowing who was writing to them.

“Seems like the whole secret admirer thing is going well, huh?” Ojiro jokes, heading to the kitchen for a snack.

“Do not mock us with your sarcasm,” Tokoyami grumbled. They had asked everyone; even the ones they knew didn’t like them, just to be sure.

“So no luck then?” he asked.

“None,” Shouji said. “But we got another letter.”

Ojiro’s interest peaked. “What do they say?”

Shouji shrugged. “We don’t know. Haven’t opened ‘em yet.”

“Well, what are you two waiting for?”

“We’re looking at all of the letters we already have first, then we’ll open the other ones,” Tokoyami explained.

“Well, lemme know how it goes,” Ojiro said, waving to them & walking away.

“Thanks-” they both said flatly.

They kept reading through theirs & each other’s letters, trying to figure out who it was. It shouldn’t be this difficult! They kept analyzing the letters until Kouda, Jirou, & Satou walked into the kitchen.

“Making dinner or something?” Shouji asked.

“Yup!” Satou said. “Kouda’s helping us too!”

“That’s cool…” mumbled Tokoyami, not taking his eyes off of the letter. He stopped reading when a peach colored, triangle shaped, head blocked part of his view.  “Uh, Kouda?” he said, a little amused.

Kouda moved his haead back, lifting it up to look at the boy. “Y-yes?” he asked.

“I was just gonna say I couldn’t quite read it, but you uh, moved your head.

“O-oh, sorry,” he muttered.

“No need to apologize my friend. You were merely curious about the writing, yes?”

Kouda nodded. “Y-you two still haven’t figured it out?” he asked. He got his answer when the two shook their heads.

“Don’t sweat it, you two,” Jirou said. “I’m sure you’ll find out eventually.”

“I hope so. Not knowing is quite bothersome.” He scratched his beak & continued reading.

“Hey Kouda, mind chopping some of the vegetables for me?” Satou asked.

Kouda nodded, rushing over to get them & began cutting. He decided to open his mouth again to speak. “J-just out of curiosity, what’ll you do w-when you find this mystery guy?” he asked.

The two looked up from their papers at Kouda. That’s when it dawned on them. They didn’t even know what they would do once they found out who this admirer was. Date them? If it were a girl, then they’d nicely reject her. But it would depend on who the guy was. The letters didn’t come off as creepy to either of them. More-so, a hopeless romantic. So that was something. Not much, but something.

Kouda’s face went red, noticing the two staring at him. He quickly looked away, trying to see if he did something wrong. “D-do I have something on my face?” he asked.

Shouji shook his head. “N-no, sorry it’s nothing about you. The question was just unexpected.”

Tokoyami nodded, crossing his arms & resting them on the counter. “To be honest, we don’t really have a plan,” he admitted. “We’ve discussed such things before, I won’t try to speak for Mezou though, but I’d say it depends on who it is.”

Shouji agreed. “Yeah, like how close we are to the person & stuff.”

Kouda nodded. “M-makes sense…” he said, quietly resuming his task.

The two resumed looking at the letters until it was time to eat. By now, everyone in the class knows about this secret admirer & during dinner, Mina struck up a conversation about it.

“If it’s someone in this class, maybe we can ask Aizawa to bring us a lie detector test so we see who it is!” Mina exclaimed.

“You are getting wayyy to into this whole love relationship thing,” Kaminari commented, chuckling at Mina’s excitement.

“That won’t be necessary,” Tokoyami said.

“Yeah, that’s a bit too much. Besides, Aizawa wouldn’t go through all of this trouble for this kind of stuff. Unless it escalates & starts interfering with everyone’s hero work. Which also, I don’t think would happen,” Shouji explained.

“Still, it’s interesting,” Mineta said before gasping. “Wait a second! This is kinda like that love story Hagakure picked, remember? Where the main character kept receiving these letters from this random person & it turned out to be their best friend?”

Mina squealed. “It’s exactly like that!” she yelled, practically jumping with an ‘aha!’ expression drawn across her face.

“Maybe you should calm down a little, ribbit,” Tsu chuckled.

“O-oh, oops!” she apologized, rendering a few chuckles from a few of her classmates.

A week had gone by, & still nothing. Well, nothing except for those damned letters that kept showing up. They still didn’t know who it was. At least they could try to take their minds off of it with a movie night. Except for the fact that it would only be three people today. The two of them, & Kouda.

Mina & Tsu were doing a double date with Hagakure & Ojiro, Mineta had extra homework, & Satou wanted to bake today instead, which they were okay with. So it was just the three of them, & a T.V.

“A-about th-the letters…” Kouda said. Oh god, what was he doing?

“Hm, what about the letters?” Shouji asked.

“W-well… I-I know who's-been writing them… bu-but I d-didn’t want to say anything i-in case you would h-hate them…” he explained.

“We wouldn’t hate them,” Tokoyami explained. “We just really want to know who.”

Kouda nodded, staying silent before speaking again. “M-me…” he finally spoke.

The two boys looked at him confused. What did he mean by that? “Who’s Me?” Tokoyami asked.

“I-I’m m-me. I’m the one who’s been w-writing th-those letters to you guys…” He balled his fists, clenching onto his pajama pants, looking away from the two. “I-I know you asked me e-earlier, b-but… I didn’t w-wanna admit it in front of p-people.”

His friends stayed silent, letting him speak. “B-but it’s not like I was trying to b-break you guys up & steal both of you f-for myself or something… I just…” He tapped his foot, thinking of how to put it. “I just… remember you t-two saying stuff about wanting to d-date more than one person wh-when you weren’t a… a thing. I could never really find a way to admit it & I-I had a crush on you guys for a long time. But I didn’t know how to confess. When I heard you two s-say that you’d be o-open to dating another person, I...I don’t know. I thought that would b-be my chance to confess.”

He was quiet then after, waiting until he could speak more clear before bumbling random gibberish again. “I just really like the both of you & I’m happy that you two are together, & I don’t know why I just started writing. I-I guess I was just hoping to get my confession out there every so often before l-letting you guys g-go… I guess I s-still haven’t though. I-I’m sorry…”

Another long moment of silence. No one said anything. Kouda got his confession out there. Even if neither of them liked him back, he got it out there. Now it was up to both of them of what they wanted to do with that information. Even if they wanted to hate him after this, he’d accept it. He dug his own grave anyways.

He heard Tokoyami & Shouji whispering quietly amongst themselves, probably trying to figure out how to horribly reject him, then insult him. He’d be sad, but wouldn’t put up a fight. He wanted to look at the movie to take his mind off of it, but as it was Tokoyami’s turn to pick the movie, it was a horror movie, & he really didn’t want to see violence & gore when he was already going to deal with being upset with himself afterwards.

He felt his -possibly former- friends’ eyes on him. He slowly turned around to look at them. They had such calm expressions on their faces. Maybe a calm before the storm. Their faces always managed to relax him. Especially whenever he began panicking & hyperventilating randomly.

They were always so nice to him, & didn’t care how quiet he was. Maybe that’s why he fell for them Now, he was gonna lose them. He shouldn’t think so negatively, but it was better than thinking positively & then being terribly mistaken.

“Well, the writing was very poetic, so thank you,” Tokoyami said.

Kouda seemed a bit more happy, but did not show it. Not in front of them. “Y-you two aren’t m-mad at me?” he asked.

“Not really,” Shouji said. “The letters were kinda cute actually. Just got a bit annoyed that we couldn’t figure it out until now though.”

“S-sorry about that…”

Tokoyami shook his head. “Don’t be, the letters were very flattering, actually.”

Does that mean they liked him back? Should he ask? No, he shouldn’t. He’d be expecting too much if he asked. He’d also be getting his hopes up. The room stayed quiet until Shouji spoke again.

“In all honesty, we were both kinda hoping it to be you. Or at least, we’re glad it is you.”

“R-really?” Kouda said, feeling his heart skipping a couple of beats.

Shouji nodded. “Yeah. It was actually really nice you thought of us like that.”

“I-I’m happy you l-liked my writing… even if you didn’t know it was me…”

“It being you makes it even better in my opinion,” Tokoyami said. “Though, maybe next time, say it non-anon. It makes thanking you much easier & far less tedious,” he chuckled.

Another moment of silence & Shouji looked at Tokoyami for a moment before asking: “You don’t have to if you don’t want to & we totally understand if you don’t, but would you wanna d-date us?”

Kouda tried covering the deep red his face was right now. He quickly looked away, trying not to look like an even bigger fool. “L-like join your relationship?”

Tokoyami nodded. “Essentially, yes.”

Kouda looked down at the ground for some time, eventually giving his answer with a silent nod. “I-I’d like that…” he said. “A-a lot…” The other two boys smiled at the response.

“Okay then,” Shouji said. Even if Kouda & Tokoyami couldn’t see it, he was grinning from behind his mask.

They all stayed sitting on the couch, resuming to the movie. To say the room felt a little awkward was an understatement. Kouda, a little scared at the horror movie, decided to scoot himself closer to the other two. They happily accepted it & allowed him to snuggle beside them, all of them now comfortably watching the movie & just enjoying each other’s company.

It felt nice to have two people to cuddle with. Especially now that the two could finally relax a little now knowing who their secret admirer was.
