Work Text:

There was once a witch who used to live in a small town for a research purpose. They tricked the people in the town by using magic believing that the witch was one of them, especially the witch had knowledge about medicinal herb, they easily band in the village and fooled all the people in town easily. But not everyone though.

“You’re here again.”

Dazai blinked. Ah, right he was going to get treated his neck treated and the other wound on his arm by Atsushi Nakajima, A witch who disguised himself as human. White platinum hair that seemed to shine brightly under the moonlight and eyes that can rival the beauty of the sunset. The platinum-hair boy was rummaging through the shelves of jars filled with herbs, various animal limbs such as frog or butterfly and dried flower.

“Well hello again, Mr. Witch!”

“Don’t call me that,” he retorted.

Atsushi eyed the bruise on his neck before sighing, “You tried to hang yourself again on fatty Madame’s apple tree didn’t you?”

“Excellent discovery, Atsushi-kun,” Dazai flopped on the witch’s wooden chair, the black cat resting beside the chair hissed at the brunette before walking away, “I’m just going to use my magic since you’re aware with my true identity and so I wouldn’t need to waste my precious herb,”

“Wow, is your herb a lot more precious than me Mr. Witch? I’m hurt”

“Of course it is important!”

With a huff, he leaned in almost invading Dazai’s personal space and startling the male as taps his bruised neck. Blue light appeared and the bruise on his neck disappeared, Atsushi then flicks his finger away. Dazai patted his neck out of curiosity to feel any pain that linger but it was all gone, healed by a magic.

“I really don’t understand you, Dazai-san. You’ve always longed for death yet you always failed to kill yourself and always come to me whenever you’re wounded from each suicide attempt you tried,” Atsushi said as he sorted the cork bottles on his table. He nearly jumped at the feeling of an arm wrapping around his slim waist, “Oh? But you seem happy every time I visit your humble home,” he teased.

“You…” Atsushi pinched the arm around his waist, ignoring the flush on his face. He was satisfied when the male behind him yelped in pain and slightly remove his arm and dramatically mourn, “Atsushi-kun is always so mean.”

Atsushi huffed in annoyance, as he went back sorting through his precious stuff, “I do hope you stopped your suicidal tendencies later in the near future, because tomorrow I wouldn’t be here. I already finished my research so now I’m going to leave this town at midnight but before that, I’m going to cast a spell to everyone in this town so they will forget I existed, that’s why I won’t be there again to heal your wound.”

“Hmmm…” Dazai hummed. “What if… I follow you?”

“Impossible, I’m leaving at midnight and by then you will forgotten that I existed.”

“What…. How?!” Atsushi exclaimed in disbelieve. In front of him, there stood Dazai with his usual smug grin plastered on his face, casually waving at him. “G-go back to your village! Back to your house!”

“That won’t work Atsushi-kun,” Dazai dramatically sighed as he patted the witch on his head, which Atsushi swatted the hand away not appreciating the gesture. “If it did work then I wouldn’t come to the forest where you are right now,”

“That’s true…”

Dazai noticed the little kid hiding behind Atsushi’s leg, glaring at him, “Oh, why is there a child here?” he crouched down and poked the little girl’s forehead before getting a scratch on his hand, “She’s my familiar, her name is Kyouka, she’s the black cat,” Atsushi explained as he picks up Kyouka, holding her just in case she exploded and attacked the brunette judging by her fierce glare. “Anyway you should go back to the village! The town folks might notice you’re missing and your parents might get worried about you!”

Dazai only smiled at the ramble before he replied, “It doesn’t matter to the village if I’m gone or not because to them I’m a nuisance and neither do I have a parents.”

“Oh…” the witch guiltily glances away from the smiling man, “I’m sorry.”

“Why are you sorry for? It’s much better like this, anyway—” Dazai suddenly snatched the familiar from Atsushi’s grasped, which the cat immediately flailed her arm around and growled angrily. “Dazai-san! She’s my familiar, what are you doing?!”

“You should hurry up before one of the villagers saw you,”

“Y-you…!”

And saw the witch and the human began to travel together, unaware their feelings started to get stronger the longer they spend their day together.

“I can’t believe you broke my last precious ingredient!”

“Ahahah, I’m sorry…”

“I can’t believe you…”

The witch and the man was currently walking through the bustling city, it’s been 4 years since the brunette follow him around. Dazai was too stubborn and kept follow the witch around, even if he tried to cast an amnesia spell to the man it still wouldn’t. He pondered for a bit, how did his healing magic work but the other spell never worked at him?

“I’m sorry Mr. Witch,”

“I told you numerous time don’t call me that—”

Atsushi felt the familiar bandaged hand patted his head as if trying to ease his anger away, “If you keep blabbering like that, you wouldn’t find the item you’re looking for in the shop,” he say with a grin that Atsushi was far too familiar with it. “You’re so insufferable, if only you didn’t make a perfect assistant then I would have cursed you.”

“But you know I’m immune with magic,”

“I will ask Kyouka to poison you.”

“Harsh,” the suicidal maniac slipped his hand into Atsushi’s and continued speaking, “But I know you wouldn’t do that. You don’t kill human.”

“I would actually consider doing it…”  Atsushi muttered under his breath even though he would never ever kill human. He doesn’t like killing people and humans are precious so of course he would never use his magic to kill. He remembered how his older sibling critiques him for befriending those selfish and weak beings, he says that the planet were better off without them. Atsushi didn’t believe him.

“— Atsushi-kun.”

He jumped at the sudden closeness, “W-what?”

“What if I say… I love you?”

“Huh?”

Suddenly the world felt too quiet. The chattering from the crowds were gone, his eyes only focused on Dazai who seemed to regret the word he said, Atsushi can feel his heard wildly thumping inside his chest and his face exploded into different shades of red.”Wh-what—”

“Forget it,” Dazai stated shortly before avoiding his gaze and fastened his speed, nearly leaving Atsushi.

“Just forget everything I said—”

“How can I forget you foolish human!” Atsushi shouted as he clenched his fist. “I also love you so how can I forget nor do I want to forget about it!”

Dazai immediately hugged the witch’s petite body, “Really?” he whispered, his voice was filled with disbelief and relief. “Yes…” without a second thought, Dazai captured Atsushi’s lip. It feels like there’s a spark on his chest, an overlasting fire in his heart as he continued to kiss Dazai.

But Atsushi forgets that a human life was short.

His death was too sudden. Even the witch never anticipated it; debris from an incomplete house fell over and…. Crushed his body. They say that the witch stayed in the city where he and the human decided to settle for a while.

Kyouka, his familiar knew the reason.

After a very, very, very long time or decade after, when many things had changed.

Atsushi gazed at the sky longingly, feeling the breeze blew over his hair. “Huh, it’s such a surprise your still in this city despite your love for travel,” Atsushi snapped his head to the left and widen his eyes. A man with a familiar smile and a familiar warm amber eye. “Why are you surprised?”

“You’re a witch, Atsushi-kun. Or do I look weird with different hair? Body? Anyway I’m back…”

The witch quickly engulfed Dazai with a hug. Afterwards the witch and the boy continued to meet again.

“You’re covering your left eye. Is it injured?”

Dazai lightly touched the bandage covering his left eye, “I guess so? It’s been covered ever since I got reincarnated.”

In different countries and forms and many times they met with memories of the past, the boy would always meet a sudden death and their meeting was always cut short.

When Dazai worriedly bought it up, Atsushi only hugged his arm with a understanding smile, “It’s alright, I’m used to waiting since a with lives on for eternity.”

Atsushi laid his head on Dazai’s shoulder, “I’ll wait for years and decade if it’s for you.”

The brunette pecked Atsushi’s forehead and softly replied, “Is that so?”

Until one day, one of Dazai’s many deaths was because of a human. He was hanged for a crime he didn’t even do and yet all of the crowds of people where throwing rocks at the body and sneered at him.

Atsushi realized, Humans really don’t change at all.

It was the witch’s first murder. Ignoring the piles of dead body, Atsushi gently removed the rope around Dazai’s dead body before hugging it as he cried. Funny that the first time they met, he treated Dazai’s bruised neck because of his failed attempt suicide.

The next time they met, the witch became the enemy of the humanity and the boy became the hero.

“Please kill me…” Atsushi sobbed out, clenching Dazai’s clothe under his finger. And so the witch and the boy continued to reincarnate and continued to meet in different world.
