“I hate my physics professor,” Korra grumbles under her breath as she swipes through her emails.
She walks at a quicker pace when she sees someone approach her, and quickly puts her headphones on so she wouldn’t have to interact with them.
“Hey, I think you dropped your wallet,” someone says, tapping her shoulder.
Korra swivels around, knocking the stranger in the chest with her backpack.
“Oh, shit, sorry, dude,” she apologizes as they both bend down to pick up her wallet again.
The stranger laughs. “My name’s Asami, by the way.”
She dusts herself off and watches in silent amusement as Korra fumbles with her things.
“Need a hand?”
“I’ve got it, thanks,” Korra responds through gritted teeth.
Asami’s smug grin slides into an expression of concern. “Are you sure?”
Korra takes a deep breath.
In, 2, 3, 4.
Hold, 2, 3, 4.
Out, 2, 3, 4.
“Would you hold my phone for a second?” She asks in an overly polite tone.
She nods, and Korra slaps it in her hand, while she stuffs her laptop and wallet in her bag.
Pedestrians walk around the two of them, glaring as they pass.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. Uh, do you wanna talk in that Starbucks or something? I feel like I’m being harassed by everyone that passes by us,” Asami says, scratching her head slightly.
“Sure,” Korra responds. “Oh, I don’t think I told you my name, did I? I’m Korra.”
She grins and they walk to the coffee shop without talking.
“I’ll take an iced coffee, black,” Asami orders. “What do you want?”
“I can place my order myself, thanks,” Korra huffs. “I’ll take an iced americano.”
The barista looks at them with a dead look in their eyes. “You two ordering together?”
Before Korra has the chance to object, Asami nods. “Yeah, and I’m paying.”
She slides her card across the counter and the barista takes it.
“Asami, have you… have you ever been to a coffee shop?”
Her smile falters. “... why do you ask?”
“You, uh, normally wait until they ask for your card. They probably hadn’t even started making the coffee itself.”
Asami’s shoulders sag. “Sorry.”
Korra punches her in the arm. “It’s fine. Come here, let’s sit here while we wait for our order.”
Korra gestures to a table and Asami follows suit.
“So, um… what do you major in?”
“I was a business major, but now I work in my fathers’ company at a manager position. What about you?”
“Ha, well, I’m just your lit major, you know…” She sounded embarrassed.
“That’s cool! What sort of things do you study? I thought lit was cool, but my dad didn’t let me do that.”
The conversation flows smoothly after that. They stay and talk for more than an hour, slowly drinking their drinks and ordering food from time to time.
They finally leave the coffee shop when Korra notices the barista lay her head down on the counter.
“Shit, it’s late. I have morning classes tomorrow.”
Asami nods, pursing her lips. “Will we see each other again?”
Korra glances at her as she packs up her belongings. “Do you want to?”
“Yes.”
She turns her head away, hair covering her face. Asami hesitates before getting up.
“Did I say something wrong? We don’t have to see each other again if you don’t want to, if I made you uncomfortable in some way-”
Korra pushes her bag onto the table and walks over to Asami. Her stride was confident, and her face set.
She stops right in front of her, gently holding her face in her hands. “May I?”
Asami nods.
Korra kisses her gently, softly, just like Asami thought she would. Her lips are soft and taste like the hot chocolate she’d been drinking. She pulls away and grabs her bag.
“Let me give you my number. Let’s do this again sometime?”
Asami nods, processing what she had said. She scrambles for her phone.
“Ye-yeah! Here, you can type it in, I’ll text you.”
Korra grins and takes the phone. “Until we meet again, Miss Sato.”
