new phone, who this?

Summary:

A look into Goro Akechi's burner phone. Being the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts is hard work, but putting up with Akira's friends when they're off duty just might be harder.

NEW GAME + SANS AKIRA AU

Notes:

And I'm back with this series! For those of you who are new here, you can read more about the AU in the series description, but basically, this is a New Game Plus where only people with personas remember the previous timeline. Since the thieves are unable to coerce Akira into the metaverse (due to Yaldaboath interfering), Goro reluctantly takes over as the temporary leader of the phantom thieves

Please enjoy!

MAKE SURE “SHOW CREATOR STYLE” IS ON

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Thieving Chat

Today 1:00 PM Ann Takamaki added Goro Akechi to the group.
Ryuji
does he really need to be in the group though
oh shit
ANN
Yusuke
You brought this embarrassment upon yourself.

Ann Takamaki

Are you going to say anything? We added you to the chat for a reason you know!
That reason being that we’ll need to stay in contact regarding palace infiltrations.
But to answer your question, no, I’m at work.
so? we’re all at school
Well, I’d hardly do myself the disservice of comparing myself to you all.
Sae Niijima just stopped by my desk, heard my phone buzzing with messages, and said “I’m glad you’re getting along with your peers, Akechi."
This is mortifying.
dsafsdjkabfas
Are you having a seizure?

Thieving Chat

Ann
Alright class is about to let out, I need a plan for my daily attempt to get Akira into the metaverse. Open to suggestions!
Ryuji
throw a rock at him
Ann
perfect, perfect, keep em coming
Yusuke
I fail to see how that would do anything except further alienate him.
Ryuji
it's a joke dude
Yusuke
I see.
If you are truly in need of a plan, though, might I suggest luring him with the promise of food? Perhaps invite him for hotpot.
Ryuji
nah, dude. that’s how we lure you.
wait i got it! Go up and flirt with him and shit
I was going to abstain from any commentary, but I have to say this plan is a new level of idiotic.
You are not a skilled actress, and your previous attempts to get friendly with him in one way or another have only made him take measures to avoid you.

Ann Takamaki

I told you, I’m a lesbian
What exactly does that have to do with anything?
:/

Thieving Chat

Ann
well, time’s up. guess i’m going with ryuji’s plan
Ryuji
hell yeah!
Yusuke
I eagerly await the results.
Ann
he patted my shoulder and said I’d find someone someday…
I think I need to lie down
Yusuke
ah, the tragic cloud that lingers after rejection...
i dont suppose you would allow me to sketch you and capture your internal storm artistically
Ann
yeah...no
find another model, Yusuke. Ryuji seems to wear the “cloud of rejection” a lot!
Yusuke
Indeed. It would almost be redundant to put it on the page…
Ryuji
aw, come on!

Yusuke Kitagawa

Are you busy this afternoon?

Thieving Chat

Ann
monamona.png
Morgana says “Have a great day, Phantom Thieves!”
Yusuke
Tell him that I appreciate it.
Ryuji
Akechi doesn’t want to take orders from a cat though, so have a shitty day, Akechi
Ann
Have the day you have, Goro.
Ryuji
??
Goro?
Since when are you two on a first-name basis?
Ann
Don’t worry about it so much, Sakamoto
Ryuji
man that's cold

Ryuji Sakamoto

dude are you stalking me
helloooo
I can see you reading these!
Why would I be stalking you?
Ain’t that you with the bike? In Inokashira Park?
No.
Your look-alike biked away
Imagine that.

Thieving Chat

Palace infiltration today. If memory serves, Okumura will start requesting mental shutdowns very soon, increasing my workload significantly.
Ryuji
increasing his workload he says
That being the case, we will prioritize him. You all aren’t strong enough for Shido’s palace yet. I can only carry the team to a certain extent.
Ann
Wait, what about Haru?
We can’t do this without her!
The biometric lock. Yes, I recall. I don’t suppose you’ve forgotten already that I was in that palace too?
Ryuji
can’t believe we did all the puzzles for you, you dick
I assure you, I could have done them on my own. It was infuriating how slowly you all worked through them. I must have watched you all fumbling through that airlock maze for hours.
Ann
be nice to Akira, he’s a country bumpkin with no sense of direction
anyway, we need Haru to even get into the palace, but even if we didn’t, we wouldn’t change her dad’s heart without her consent
I wasn’t aware you contacted Kamoshida’s family to make sure his change of heart was okay with them.
Yusuke
I personally am grateful that Ann and Ryuji came to me before changing Madarame’s heart. Even though I never want to be under that wicked man’s control again…
He was the closest thing I had to family. To face him, I had to let go of a beautiful lie. And though his love was a falsehood, it was mine. It’s always preferable to let something go than to have it forcibly ripped from your hands.
Ann
Yeah. Thanks, Yusuke.
If you don’t mind me saying it, Goro, it also felt wrong to face Shido without you last time. We really did want you to come with us.
I’m glad that this time, you’ll be there.
I have no intentions of dying before Shido is taken down.
And if you all would let me finish before meandering off on sentimental tangents, I was going to mention Haru Okumura and assign Ann the task of bringing her to our meeting place at 4 PM sharp.
Ann
Okay! Mona and I have got it covered!
...what should I say to convince her to come?
Figure it out. If being friendly doesn’t work, perhaps suggest that her father’s life is in danger of being taken by a madman.

Thieving Chat

Today 6:00 PM Ann Takamaki added Haru Okumura to the group.
Ann
Welcome back, Haru!
Ryuji
welcome back, we missed ya!
Yusuke
How are you feeling? Despite having gone through it once before, I found myself entirely exhausted after awakening my persona.
Haru
Hi everyone! I’m resting for the day, but I’m doing alright.
Thank you all for giving me the encouragement I needed to awaken my rebellion. It was just me and Mona-chan before, so this time I felt a little less alone…
Ah! Not that you weren’t a great teammate last time, Mona-chan!
Ann
he says he’s insulted… he’s throwing a little hissy fit
literally hissing at me
Ryuji
well dont be rude! Hand the cat your phone so he can speak for himself!
Ann
ssksadsfa xclkn
ds
lllllllllll
he has spoken.
Yusuke
Exquisitely worded, Morgana. They may appear to be meaningless ramblings, but to deem them nonsense would be like comparing childish scribbles to the works of Kenzo Okada.
Ryuji
huh?
Ann
You’re so uncultured, Ryuji
Haru
Anyway, I wanted to ask what I can do to help get Akira’s memories back.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that I want him back as soon as possible.
Ryuji
yeah, no kidding
we’ll get him back, Haru, I promise!
Yusuke
Yes, as soon as your father’s heart is changed, we will once again focus our energy on the ongoing mission to get Akira back.
Haru
I don’t mean to cause trouble, but couldn’t we try to get him back before we face my father?
Ryuji
I mean, I really get it. I want the guy back too, but like we said in the palace, we’ve been having a real hard time getting him into the Metaverse. Akechi’s even theorized that there’s some kinda greater force pulling the strings and shit
i dunno if i believe THAT but
Ann
yeah we’ve been doing our best but something always seems to interfere. We can’t count on it happening quickly so we’ve got to just keep changing hearts until we’re strong enough to face Shido again
Haru
I see.
Ryuji
i know you kinda had a crush on him, but don’t you think the mission’s more important?
Okumura-san desires a change in leadership, Sakamoto.
Haru
I’d ask you whether or not you intend to harm my father, Akechi-san, but honesty is a virtue you don’t seem to have the ability to practice.
So, I ask that you keep your words to yourself. I will work with you because our goals align. That is all.

Yusuke Kitagawa

Are you available tomorrow?
Is this about the nude modeling shit again?
Ah, I see you are already aware of my intentions.
No.
And to save yourself the trouble, I am also saying "no" to all the other times you might think to ask that of me.

Ryuji Sakamoto

you like exercise and shit right?
akira used to go to the gym with me sometimes
So?
i'm gonna weight lift after school so i need someone with me
and you're like the leader now so that's your responsibility
I can assure you, it isn't.
Also, I'm busy after school. I have an interview to attend.
great can't wait to hear you bitch about the phantom thieves some more
I have said far crueler things to your face, but it's my public facade you choose to take issue with.
well yeah dude at least when you're an asshole its like real yknow? fake you is somehow a bigger prick
Your commentary is not appreciated.
If you don't mind going to the gym later in the evening, I suppose I could make time to go with you.
hell yeah!

Goro, more often than not, kept his burner phone safely hidden away in his briefcase, on silent. The seemingly endless amount of unimportant rambling that the re-established Phantom Thieves piled into their group chat grated on his nerves on the best of days. And, now that Okumura had joined, awakening her Persona and unlocking the memories of her dear father’s fate in the last timeline, Goro found himself ignoring almost everything that graced the home screen. After all, he was the leader. He would contact them when he needed, and they could just do whatever on their own.

That would be reckless, though, he reminded himself. You have to keep an eye on what they talk about in there, or they’re bound to do something stupid. Now that Okumura’s heart had been publicly changed, they were officially on Shido’s radar as a genuine threat to his operations, rather than a minor annoyance he could assign to Goro to investigate and take care of however he saw fit. Goro’s primary cell phone had been ringing day and night, and Goro had been subjected to many rage-fueled rants about the Phantom Thieves and the lack of mental shutdown requests (everyone was afraid of becoming the next Okumura, it seemed), and Goro just had to sit and “yes, sir” his way through them.

So, when he found himself wanting to read the inane ramblings of his “teammates” as the early summer days dragged on, he blamed it on the thieves simply being the lesser evil. He didn’t participate beyond what he deemed necessary, of course, but something about reading their messages, grimacing at their endearing little “bits” and jokes at his expense, he almost felt…

Goro glared at his coffee and drank it down quickly. The burn against his tongue was welcome, as adequate punishment for almost letting his thoughts wander into weak territory. He refused to lose to the thieves, and it was clear enough what game they were playing with him. Kitagawa’s insistence on using him for drawing studies. Sakamoto coincidentally changing his cardio-heavy workouts to include more weight-lifting that he just happened to need a spotting partner for. They both were painfully transparent in their attempts to endear themselves to him. Thankfully, Okumura had yet to try anything of the sort, and likely wouldn’t, for obvious reasons. He hated them all and their pathetic attempts to catch him off guard.

“Uh… Akechi-san?”

“Hm?”

Goro looked up from the counter and saw Akira looking at him sheepishly, scratching at the back of his head.

“Is it that bad?”

Is it that bad?

Sakamoto wasn’t as chatty as Goro thought he might be and was good to exercise with. He’d tried to say he understood Goro since he had a shitty dad too, but that was just insulting since Sakamoto’s mom was still alive and happy. Goro hadn’t said that to him, though. It was a rare moment where Goro had no desire to say something hurtful, even to someone as pig-headed as Sakamoto.

Kitagawa was… eccentric, but far from the most bothersome person Goro had met. He’d yet to agree to model nude for him, (nor would he literally ever because what the fuck), but he’d allowed him some simple sketches when they rested in safe rooms. Goro had also, on occasion, given Kitagawa some of his own cut of the Metaverse money they collected. It wasn’t out of the goodness of his heart or anything, though. He couldn’t have Kitagawa passing out in battle on him due to malnourishment. That was all.

Ann was actually pleasant to be around, loathe as he was to admit it even to himself in the privacy of his thoughts. He’d been stupidly vulnerable the first time they’d hung out, making the mistake of telling her about his… complex feelings… for Akira. Ever since, she’d been relentless with her requests to spend time with him, offering up a nauseating amount of support and even confiding in him about her own complex feelings toward her best friend, Shiho. As if he cared about that at all. Goro grimaced to himself and wished silently that Ann would take a hint, since it was clear even from her biased perspective that Shiho liked her back.

It… wasn’t that bad. Having teammates. Being around people.

“Akechi-san?”

“What?” Goro asked. “I… apologize. I’m afraid I got a bit lost in my thoughts.”

“The coffee,” Akira said, gesturing a little towards Goro’s now-empty cup. “Was it that bad? I just… I saw you staring at it, and your face just looked sort-of… irritated. And then you just kind of gulped it down. You usually seem to savor it, though.”

Goro blinked back at him, replaying the short conversation in his mind and feeling a little foolish.

“No, no, it’s fine,” Goro said. “Great, actually. I just have a lot on my mind these days.”

“I can tell,” Akira said. “Just… don’t work yourself too hard, okay? But I’m glad it’s good.” Akira grinned at him, a little bit of his forgotten mischief teasing the side of his smile. “So… is it better than that other guy’s coffee yet?”

The other guy being Akira. From the last time they'd lived through the year. Not that Goro could say that out loud. Nor did he particularly want to, because until this Akira’s coffee was up to par, he could keep conning free coffee out of him due to their silly little bet.

“Not quite,” Goro said, tacking on a charming smile. “Looks like this one is on you.”

“I’m so glad I have those other three part-time jobs…” Akira mumbled under his breath. “Talking to you is worth a lot, it seems.”

“You’re quite the flatterer, Kurusu-kun,” Goro said.

Akira laughed a bit to himself, though Goro could easily identify an edge to it. Akira had been restless lately, always on edge whenever Goro stopped by for coffee. At first, Goro assumed some of Akira’s self-preservation instincts had survived the time-loop, but he dismissed that theory when he remembered that Akira’s self-preservation instincts were basically non-existent. Besides, they had hardly even talked. Goro ordered coffee, Akira would say hello, but never seemed to step beyond his role as a barista, no matter how much Goro tried to prod him into a conversation.

“Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you,” Akira said, the sentence almost coming out like one, quick jumbled word. “Are you… uh…” Akira coughed into his hand and apparently chose a new approach to his mysterious question. “Would you want to go––”

The store bell cut Akira off mid-sentence as the door was roughly pushed in by the sunny force-of-nature that was Ann Takamaki. Goro could feel exhaustion set into his features. He shouldn’t have mentioned he had been coming to Leblanc for Akira. Akira’s coffee. Leblanc coffee.

“Hiiii!” Ann called, inviting herself fully into the cafe and sliding in the seat next to him. “Wow, Goro. You look awful.”

“Thanks, you look like absolute shit,” he bit back. She stuck out her tongue at him, completely unbothered. Which was fair. Goro probably did look awful, having come to the cafe to collapse after being up and working for thirty-two hours straight, while Ann had likely just retouched all her makeup after a laid-back day at school.

“Are you two friends?” Akira asked.

“I wouldn’t say that,” Goro said.

“Nice to see you, uh, Kurusu-kun!” Ann addressed Akira sloppily. Akira eyed her somewhat warily, taking a step back from the counter, supposedly to find a fortress among the glass jars of coffee beans.

“Takamaki,” Akira regarded her. “Um. I’m going to take my break now. Please don’t burn down the store.” Then he made a hasty retreat, not even remembering to take off his apron. Goro watched him go, as did Ann, who at least had the decency to look apologetic that she’d driven him away.

“Why did he tell me not to burn down the store?” Ann huffed.

“Technically, he addressed both of us.”

“Yes, but Lady Ann would never do something so barbaric! Unlike someone else we know...”

Morgana’s little furry head emerged from Ann’s bag, wearing the smuggest look that a cat could manage.

“Once he's back from the store, I should tell Sakura-san there’s a four-legged health hazard in his place of business,” Goro said.

“Hey! I’m not a health hazard!” Morgana protested. “And I used to live here!”

“Have you been tested for worms?” Goro said, not able to suppress an amused smirk. It was too easy to rile him up.

“N-no! I don’t have worms, though! I’m not a regular cat!”

“I can’t believe Akira just walked out like that,” Ann said, ignoring Morgana’s continued mews for her attention.

“Maybe he’s afraid you were here to ask him out again,” Goro said with an amused snort. “Assuming you aren’t here for that, why are you here? Were you hoping to trap him here?”

Ann rolled her eyes and turned in her seat to fully face him.

“No, not really,” she said. “Well… maybe a little. But it’s clear he doesn’t have any interest in being my friend, so maybe I should just give him space until we figure out… the you-know-what.”

“Mm. That may be wise,” Goro commented.

“Hey, so now that Okumura’s done, are we gonna target Kanoshiro next? We still need to recruit Makoto to the Phantom Thieves and––mmmphhhh!!”

Goro removed his hand from Ann’s mouth after a second, when he was sure she’d taken the hint.

“Not in public. Fucking hell. You’re almost as bad as Ryuji,” Goro hissed.

“He just gets excited,” Ann said. “And why so jumpy? There’s no one around to even hear.”

“Kurusu could walk back in at any point––”

“––not before he sees me leave, I’m guessing,” Ann said. “And I’m seriously asking. Can we get Makoto back? She helped me with my summer work last time.”

“Shouldn’t you know how to do it if you’ve already done it once before?” Goro asked blankly.

“Lady Ann is right! Kaneshiro is taking advantage of students in Shibuya as we speak, so we need to change his heart!”

“Boo-fucking-hoo,” Goro mumbled. “There’s a guy exploiting gullible people for money. That never happens. Clearly, he should be our top priority.”

“You don’t even care?” Morgana screeched at him.

“There are more important things to worry about,” Goro said dryly. “Sure, we could do it just for the practice, but knowing where a lot of his money is going, do you really think it’s a great idea for us to take another hearty swing at the hornet's nest, Takamaki?”

Ann pouted next to him.

“I think you just don’t want Makoto to join.”

“And why would I give a shit?”

“Because you probably think we’ll all make her the new leader.”

“We’re not talking about this in public,” Goro hissed, slamming his fist on the counter. Ann didn’t even flinch. She was annoyingly used to him and his outbursts. She just shrugged in response. “And for the record,” Goro added, voice dropping even lower, “I don’t even like being the stupid leader. If you all want Niijima, that’s none of my concern.”

“Yeah. Okay,” Ann said with a laugh. “I could’ve sworn you used to be better at lying.”

Unknown Number

Hello, leader of the Phantom Thieves.
Or should I say Goro Akechi?
Who is this?
I am Alibaba. You, Goro Akechi, are the leader of the Phantom Thieves, are you not?
I’m afraid you’re mistaken.
Can you really steal hearts?
Let’s make a deal.
I want you to steal someone’s heart. If you do this, I won’t go to the police and expose your lies.
No deal. I will not bow to your threats.
I have access to all the data on this phone.
I will make all your messages public if you deny me.

Thieving Chat

We have a situation.
Ann
Goro Akechi?? Texting during class?? Should i call the tabloids?
Someone has ascertained my identity.
Yusuke
As Black Mask?
No, as the leader of the Phantom Thieves.
Also, what kind of fucking name is Black Mask? Very creative.
Ryuji
i thought it was like your edgy codename
Why would I need a codename when I was working alone?
Haru
Who knows your identity? Do they know who we are as well?
Someone apparently has access to the data on this burner phone. They called themselves Alibaba.
Ann
OH
OH THANK GOD
Ryuji
lolll
Something to share?
Yusuke
This happened last time, albeit to Akira.
It’s Futaba.
Haru
Oh my… that’s right, you all stole her heart so she could take down the fake Medjed for you, right?
What I don’t understand is how she surmised my identity. I’ve been incredibly careful, but if I’ve slipped up and someone from Shido’s network catches that same mistake, we will all be in grave danger.
Ann
oh shit
no uh… Futaba has Leblanc bugged. She probably heard us talking the other day
I recall you telling me that I was overreacting when I told you not to fucking talk about it in a public place.
Why exactly does she have Leblanc bugged? Has it always been bugged?
Ryuji
Futaba’s a total shut in right now, dude. She only got better once we changed her heart last time
Unknown
Last time?
What the fuck.
Unknown
What do you all know about Futaba Sakura?
Yusuke
Calm down. It is a lot to explain.
Unknown
Who is Shido?
I can’t find anything recent about Medjed in the news.
Ann
Well, it’s like time travel!
Ryuji
yeah, but you just forgot about it
Unknown
That doesn’t make sense!
For fuck's sake.
We will steal your heart. Things will be clearer after that.

Thieving Chat

Meet up in Yongen-Jaya as soon as possible for palace infiltration. I assume the palace is located at her house?
Yusuke
It is.
Ann
The rest of us can probably do it on our own! We know you’re busy all the time, Goro, so leave this one to us.
Yeah, right, like I’m going to trust all you idiots not to fuck it up somehow.
Ryuji
nah, we super got this dude. plus the palace is super uncomfy
Haru
We don’t want to cause Futaba additional pain. So, I’m sure you can surmise why you are not wanted.
Ryuji
Come on, it aint that he’s not wanted
we just don’t want you all mopey
Excuse me?
Ann
It’ll be super hot too, and we’re all gonna be all sweaty and exhausted by the end. The palace is a pyramid in the desert.
I see.
Yusuke
We should have brought this up sooner, but it all happened so fast. One way or another, it might be best if you didn’t come along.
I’m going. End of discussion.

Futaba Sakura

So, I guess you and Akira are moving pretty fast if you’re already sharing custody of the Phantom Thieves, huh?
So, you’re awake.
Yeah.
Are you feeling alright, Sakura-san?
I crash from time to time. It happens.
If there’s anything you wish to say to me, you are allowed to say it.
Due to these strange circumstances, I’ve been able to fix some things, but not everything.
I took your mother from you. I’ll admit, walking through your palace brought back some of my own memories of how excruciating it was when my own mother died.
I know it was a distortion and it should be cleared by now, but I feel the need to remind you that you are not responsible for your mother’s death.
Do you know that too?
I can’t say I understand.
You’re not responsible for your mother’s death.
It was Shido who killed your mother.
We have that in common.
Don’t minimize my role in it. I could have refused the order.
That’s true. But then you probably wouldn’t be here now.
Sakura-san, if you aren’t comfortable being a part of the Phantom Thieves under my leadership, then I’ll leave.
The others are itching to recruit Makoto, and she’ll do an adequate enough job as a leader, I suspect.
No, I want you to stay.
You deserve to be there when we kick Shido’s ass with the power of friendship and model guns.
Besides, if you stick around, I can make fun of you.
The others have been filling that role quite well on their own.
That’s what you think you emo candy-cane bdsm motherfucker
What?
Also can we talk about the fact that you have all the Featherman movies saved on your phone, but not the third arc of the original anime?
It’s a shit arc.
You fucking take that back, I’ll steal your toes, Goro
I didn’t give you permission to call me that.
Too bad. And call me Futaba, weirdo

Thieving Chat

Today 3:00 PM Goro Akechi added Futaba Sakura to the group.
Futaba
hellooooo phantom thieves
now that i have micro-dosed death in the form of a one-week coma, lets get out there and steal some hearts
Ann
Nice to have you here! And added properly this time!
I didn’t do that.
Futaba
mmm weird maybe you got hacked detective boy why dont you call the cops on me
Haru
welcome back, Futaba-chan!
Yusuke
We’re all glad you’re alright.
Futaba
Somehow I even missed you, Inari
um excuse me ryuji get in the chat its welcoming party time
ryujionthefloor.png
He got too overzealous with the weights and is currently unable to stand up, much less use his arms, or so he claims.
Futaba
what is with this chat name
Ryuji
cool, right?
Ann
he lives
Futaba Sakura renamed the chat “Who Would Win? Ryuji vs A Few Heavy Cylinders”
Ryuji
you should be nicer to me, cuz i got turned into a stupid rat three times in your palace
Learn to dodge.

Yusuke Kitagawa

Good afternoon.
No.
Another time, perhaps.

Featherman Erotica Bookclub

Ann
Hey everyone! are we going to mementos today after school?
Yes, I believe that would be wise. We need to change Shido's heart soon. He's growing more ruthless by the day as the election nears.
Ryuji
We’re gonna take that asshole down!
Btw… what’s with the chat name?
Futaba
mwhehehe
Im sorry did you want me to name this PHANTOM THIEVES GROUP CHAT?
I believe almost anything would be better than this.
Futaba renamed the chat “Goro Akechi Fanclub”
Why.
Futaba renamed the chat “Shido is an Egg-Faced Bitch”
Haru
Well, I don’t believe any of us will object to that one.
You all are insufferable.
Futaba, stop flooding my notifications with your pointless messages.
Futaba
naw, youre loving this
I assure you, I’m not.

Futaba Sakura

you look like you’re really hating it
Are you hiding in the bushes?
No, but one of your fangirls is. I found this on a forum two minutes ago. Best get out of there before she tries to cut off some of your hair for a keepsake or demonic ritual
may i offer accompanying me to Akihabara as an alternative to having your hair stolen
you really wont be popular without it
seriously shido is so butt ugly i hope you never go bald
For fuck’s sake, fine.

Dicks Out For Ryuji's Exam Scores

My apologies for bothering everyone at this hour, but I’m afraid it’s urgent.
Someone broke into my apartment and attacked me. I got out, but I need somewhere to stay for the night.
Is anyone up?

Haru Okumura

Are you hurt anywhere?
I’m fine. I managed to knock my attacker out.
Yakuza. He didn’t have a gun on him, so I can only imagine he was sent to intimidate me rather than to kill me. He tried to break my leg.
If you need a place to stay, I have plenty of spare rooms.
Haru Okumura shared their location with you.
Thank you. I’m on my way over.
Do you need me to call you a cab?
I’m perfectly capable of walking over myself. It’s not far.
I’m going to call your phone if that’s okay with you. Ann told me she always calls a friend and keeps them on the line to get predatory men to stay away from her if she finds herself alone at night.
That’s fine.

After a minute, Goro’s phone rang. He paused for a second, taking stock of where he was. A few people dotted the sidewalks, but it was eerily quiet, the blanket of the night only broken by the vibrations of the device in his hand. He was about halfway to Okumura’s place.

Knowing he’d have to indulge her, he picked up the phone.

“Akechi-san?”

“Yes. Hello, Okumura.”

“Are you on your way over?”

“I am. I suspect I’ll be there within ten minutes.”

“Ah. That’s good.”

Goro continued walking, listening uncomfortably to the nothingness on the other end of the line. He was in no position to refuse help, especially when he’d swallowed what little pride he’d had left and had asked for it, but he would have preferred to spend the night with any of the others over Okumura. She hated him, and he disliked her a great deal himself. Her misplaced sympathy over the fate of her terrible father felt like nothing less than an insult. Goro just couldn’t understand it. He couldn’t understand her.

“Can I ask you something, Okumura?” Goro found himself saying.

“Sure.” A stiff reply.

“Your father is in prison, wallowing in his own remorse,” Goro said. “Is that… is it truly enough for you? The man has ordered murders. He fully intended to marry you off, or at least sell your body just to advance his business ventures. Do you truly believe someone like that is better left alive? Your ‘betrayal’, as you called it, is more like an undeserved mercy. I cannot fathom that you don’t wish to crush his skull under your heel and grind it into the dirt.”

Okumura was silent on the other end of the line, and for just a moment, Goro felt a spark of fear that he had uninvited himself to the safe haven she was offering him with his callousness.

“... I don’t think anything could be ‘enough’,” Okumura said quietly. “I don’t think anything would be, if I were to set my heart on the path of revenge. Because nothing that’s done to him will fix any of the damage he did to me. I betrayed my father because it was in my best interest and because I wanted him to become a better man.”

“How virtuous,” Goro said, spitting out the words like poison. “Can you truly tell me that not once last timeline, once you were freed from his clutches forever, not once did you ever think to yourself that things were better that way? That he got what he deserved?”

Okumura didn’t respond, but her steady breaths indicated that she hadn’t hung up the phone. Not yet.

“Did you feel that way when I died?” Goro pressed.

“No,” Okumura said. “I felt sick when you died. I even cried for you that night, even when I told myself I had no need to do so.”

Foolish. Disgusting. Goro rolled his eyes. He wondered if she thought that her answer would make him happy.

“May I ask you a question of my own, Akechi-san?” Okumura asked.

“Sure.”

“Do you want Shido to love you? Do you desire to make him proud, even though you despise him?”

Goro’s hand gripped the sides of his phone impossibly tighter, his whole arm trembling with rage. How dare she suggest such a thing? Okumura knew what sort of person Shido was, and even if she’d only ever be able to comprehend the smallest sample of the ocean that was Goro’s hatred for the man, she should understand that no part of him would ever accept any love from Shido, if he was capable of such an emotion.

But… did he still want it?

Looking back on the past, his old plan, and everything that had transpired while he was under Shido’s thumb, Goro puzzled and puzzled over why he had always felt the need to build Shido up to the very top of his power before sending him crashing down to hell with him. For the satisfaction of it? Perhaps. But Shido was already doing quite well for himself without Goro’s help. Hell, Goro wasn’t even the only hitman on his payroll. So, why help him? Why, why, why?

Goro knew the answer. He’d known for a while but had hidden the truth down, down in the depths of his heart, forcing it under so he could kill it before it resurfaced. I decide the truth, he’d told himself. I decide the truth.

“Good work, Akechi,” echoed in his mind. Shido’s praise was hard to come by, but the clarity with which he remembered the words so seldom uttered by his father was evidence enough. Even just conjuring the memory filled his stomach with a twisting amalgamation of pride and shame.

“He doesn’t love anything,” Goro said shortly. He closed his eyes and stopped walking, just for a second, trying to collect himself as he answered. Just be honest. You owe her that much, Detective Prince Akechi chipped in unhelpfully in his head. Oh, that’s right. She said you weren’t even capable of that.

“I…” Goro tried to say something but found any words he tried to spin together caught in the dry barbed wire his throat had turned into.

“Akechi-san? Are you still there?” Okumura asked.

“Yes,” he snapped. “That… that is to say, I am still here.”

“Right,” Okumura said. “Of course.”

“I don’t want his love,” Goro said, pulling each word out like he was extracting a tooth with no novocaine. “But, whenever I get a glimpse of him caring about me… even just valuing what I can do for him… I… I don’t know why. I hate him. I shouldn’t care what he thinks of me. But I’m just too fucking––”

Goro cut himself off, feeling the devil within him scraping against his ribcage, begging to be let free. He took a deep breath. Feeding his anger now would accomplish nothing. It was three in the morning, and he was accepting the help of someone who hated him more than anyone else in the world.

“...I’m glad to know that you can be honest, after all,” Okumura said.

“You’re saying that you relate,” Goro said.

“Yes,” Okumura said. “Though I have to say, I think both of us are on paths that will lead to us becoming people our fathers would never be proud of. Changes of heart aside, of course.”

“True,” Goro said. “And I take it that’s a good thing?”

“It’s a very good thing.”

Oh my god Goro are you okay
Guys did anyone check on him last night
Futaba
he’s fine. i woke up an hour ago and checked his phone location... he’s at Haru’s
Ryuji
oh good
haha are they in the same room?
Futaba
i didnt think it was possible to be this dense but u keep breaking the barrier every time, ryuji
Ryuji
hey i was just joking!
even i know he’s got that weird thing with akira
Yusuke
I’ve never quite understood their bond myself, but it intrigues me.
First of all, if you’re going to talk about me, use the separate group chat that you have without me in it.
Ryuji
who told you about that
You did, just now. But it’s obvious such a thing existed.
Secondly, Futaba is correct. Okumura let me stay over last night for my safety.
Haru
I’ll add that we were in separate rooms, Ryuji.
Lastly, I don’t have a “weird thing” with Kurusu-kun.
Futaba
press x to doubt
Ann

Ryuji
x
Yusuke
How exactly is a single character supposed to convey doubt?
Haru
I think they’re referring to your “rivalry”, Akechi.
What exactly do you all find odd about that? Kurusu founded the Phantom Thieves, a group that opposed my goals directly, both in reality and in the metaverse. It is only natural that we would have a relationship based on our mutual hatred and desire to compete with each other.
Futaba
lolllll...who’s gonna tell him
Something to say, Futaba?
Ryuji
man, you don’t know how many times he’d ditch us to hang out with you
Yusuke
Akira would sometimes help me people-watch when my inspiration was waning, and on one occasion I asked him what he thought the purest form of beauty was. To which he replied “I don’t know, man, have you ever just looked real deep into Goro Akechi’s eyes?”
Futaba
fellas is it gay to look real deep into goro akechi’s eyes
Haru
I do recall that I once asked him about a Jazz Club in Kichijoji and suggested we go together… and he told me that he couldn’t because it was “his and Akechi’s spot”.
Ann
omg did you really take him to the jazz club?
On occassion.
Ann
aw <3
Okay, stop that.
Futaba
hows that hatred and desire to compete going in your little coffee dates
Don’t be fucking stupid, they aren’t dates, nor would either of us want them to be. Akira is not interested in me for reasons I should hope are obvious.
I go to LeBlanc because I happen to enjoy the coffee. That’s it. The next person to bring this up loses their front line privileges until further notice.
Futaba
mwhehehe im immune
look out for my joker x crow fanfic 50k enemies to lovers, slow burn, rated e. Tags include hurt/comfort, bdsm, and consensual murder
I understood very little of that, but enough to know that the next time I see you, I’m going to rip you limb from fucking limb.
Futaba
don’t test me Goro ill leak your nudes
I don’t have nudes for you to leak.
Futaba
ok thats on me you called my bluff
Haru
Oh my.
Ann
looked some of that up, huh Haru?
Ryuji
dude i dont think consensual murder is a thing
Futaba renamed the chat “Consensual Murder Chat”
I'm turning off my phone.
