Chapter Text
“Charlie?”
“No.”
“Tyler?”
“Tyler Sawyer? Are you kidding me?”
“Okay, so I’ll take that as a no.”
Alex and Lucy were sitting at their table while Maggie puttered around the kitchen. They had a baby names book open on the table in front of them and were taking turns calling out their favorites. They were going down the list of “gender neutral names” in the front of the book, but so far nothing had called to them.
Lucy flipped to the next page and began reading off of it while Alex finished the gender-neutral list.
“Rebel” Lucy said.
“Yep, just what this family needs more of - rebels,” said Maggie.
“Calamity?”
“Hard pass.”
“Arrow?”
“How many superheroes do you want to have in this family? I need something that requires a little less cape action, here,” said Alex.
“Okay, so no cool names,” muttered Lucy.
“James?” asked Alex.
“You want to name our daughter after my ex?”
“Uh, well, when you put it that way, no.”
“How ‘bout Jamie?” said Maggie from the kitchen.
“Yeah, maybe,” said Lucy. “I don’t know.”
“I just feel like I want to meet her before we give her a name,” said Alex.
“But can we at least narrow it down to two or three choices before we get to the hospital?” said Maggie. “I don’t want to be trying to narrow down the list from 30 with the two of you when we’re all sleep deprived and exhausted and excited. That’s how she’s going to end up being James Rebel Calamity Arrow Sawyer.”
“I agree, but we’re definitely going to have to keep trying,” said Lucy.
“Have you guys given any thoughts to her middle name - or names - yet?” asked Alex. “Like, do you have any important family names or naming traditions you’d like to honor?”
“Well, I definitely don’t have any names from my family,” said Maggie. “What about you, Alex?”
“I mean, not really. Unless you want to make her middle name be Eliza and then she can be named after both my mother and your high-school girlfriend.”
“No, I think I’ll pass,” said Maggie. “What about you, Luce?”
“I… Well if there were any traditions on the Lane side, I’m not sure of them and I’m not passing them on. My dad did really seem to like that both Lois and I had names that started with the same letter, and he insisted that we have ‘normal’ names - i.e. white-people names. As much as he loved our mother, and as different as a person as he was when she was alive, he still wasn’t going to let her give us names that sounded remotely Lebanese. I don’t know if he even would have married her if her name didn’t sound so ‘white.’”
Maggie walked over, placing a hand softly on Lucy’s shoulder. She and Alex knew most of Lucy’s stories about her mom now, but they also knew how much harder it was for Lucy to not have her around now that she was going to be a mom. It was hard on them all to have missing mother-figures.
“My mom’s name was Sara,” whispered Lucy. “Could we…?”
“Yes,” said Alex.
“Absolutely, if that’s what you want,” added Maggie.
“I think maybe just as a middle name,” said Lucy. “I still like the idea of giving her a gender-neutral first name. And I think it can be hard on kids to carry the responsibility of a family member in their first name.”
“Okay, so a gender-neutral first name that sounds good with Sara and Sawyer,” said Maggie. “That sounds perfect.”
“And maybe a second middle name to put between Sara and Sawyer?” said Lucy. “I’m grateful that we’re using my mom’s name, but Sara and Sawyer next to each other is a mouthful. Also, if those are her middle and last name we can’t give her any names that start with the letter A because then her initials would be ASS.”
Alex snorted.
“Oh my god I married a 10-year-old,” said Lucy.
“Yep!” said Alex, popping the P. “And now you’re gonna have my baby! And she’s gonna be just like me.”
Lucy and Maggie groaned.
----
“Blue,” yelled Alex as she walked into central command.
“Sir, I don’t think Blue is your best work,” said Vasquez.
“August.”
“Wasn’t that the name of a Roman Emperor?” asked Demos from across the room.
“No, I’m pretty sure that was Augustus,” said Alex.
“Remington?”
“Remington Sawyer? Doesn’t that sound like a gun?” said Vasquez. They added a “sir” when Alex turned to glare at them.
“How about Ar-”
“Are you abusing your powers to force your subordinates to help you choose baby names, Director Sawyer?” Maggie asked, appearing next to Demos’s station.
“No- I’m just…”
Vasquez laughed behind Alex and Alex spun around to shoot them a glare.
“What did she decide on, Vas?” Maggie said.
“Well, she was just debating the merits of Blue versus Remington when-”
“Ah,” said Maggie, “I think that’s a no for me.”
“What are you doing here, anyway, Detective Sawyer?” asked Alex.
“That depends, what are you doing here, Director Sawyer?” Maggie said, her eyes twinkling.
Vasquez pretended to gag. “You two are disgusting.”
“I will have you know that J’onn had some field work to do so he called me into National City for the day,” said Alex to Maggie. “And as for you, Vas…”
“Yes, Director Sawyer?” Vasquez asked, wearing their most innocent expression.
“You’re in command, I’m going to the director’s office.”
“Have fun in there, Sawyers!” Vasquez hollered as Maggie and Alex walked away.
Maggie shot them a wink on her way out.
When they came back out of the director’s office Kara was lounging over Vasquez’s workstation, their heads close together.
“-was that Adrien without the E or with the E on the end, do you think?” Kara said.
“Supergirl! You are not going to find out the gender of the baby,” scolded Alex. “Now quit harassing my agents.”
Kara jumped away from Vasquez’s desk.
“Alex! I didn’t know you were at the city base today. Vasquez and I were just discussing…” Alex raised her eyebrow, waiting. “Nothing- nothing! Tacos! Nothing tacos! That’s the name of the new taco place in… Toledo!”
----
Near the end of Lucy’s 8th month they all went out on a date to a fancy restaurant - a last big hurrah when they were sure they could get it. They - of course - ended up discussing names. The day before Maggie had shot down Emerson for being “too white,” and Alex had shot down Max with a shudder. They finally settled on Elle as the second middle name, a subtle nod to Kara.
“Okay, so Rowan, Jamie, Nico, Luca, Kai, Frances, Arden-”
“Can we add Indiana?” interjected Lucy.
“Like the st-”
“No, like the fucking adventurer,” growled Maggie. “I know your game, Luce, we are not naming our child after some crazy dude looking for treasure.”
“How about Sunny?” Lucy responded, beaming.
Maggie rolled her eyes.
“Alright you two, do we have anything to discuss that isn’t baby names?” Alex asked.
Lucy and Maggie looked at each other and shrugged. Turning back to Alex, Lucy rested her elbow on the table, put her chin in her hand, and fluttered her eyelashes at Alex.
“No,” Lucy said, “why don’t you entertain us, Alex?”
