The New Employee

Summary:

"You know what happens when we have too many bad reviews? Corporate will fire you.”

Lena let out a slow sigh and dusted off some fuzz that stuck to her sleeve.

“Fine. I’ll call back the sunshine fashion design girl after work.”

Chapter Text

“Hello, nice you meet you”, said Lena, as she shook the hand of what must be the 4th interviewee she’s seen today.

The first one showed fashionably late, with a Starbucks coffee in her hand. The second one was dressed in sweats and a baggy hoodie, totally not appropriate for an interview. And the third one reeked of alcohol. Seriously? Drinking right before an interview? Lena sighed and sat on a brand new leather chair by the end of a meeting table. She was now half-seriously regretting her role as a manager at Krypt Klothes. Glancing at the resume of the blonde-haired girl in front of her, she was ready to get the interview over with.

“So tell me about yourself.”

The interviewee cheerfully responded. “My name is Kara Danvers, I’m in my last semester at National City University for fashion design. I love dogs and love clothes….hmm yeah, that's it!”

Looking at her outfit alone, Lena could tell that Kara is quite talented at fashion. She was wearing a floral-patterned top with a beige cardigan. “I’d wear that”, Lena thought. Although not necessary, good fashion taste is valued at Krypt Klothes. Humming in approval, the interview was surprisingly off to a good start.

Fourty minutes later, after listening to Kara’s passionate speech about the importance of sustainable clothing, the interview was finally over. Standing up from her seat and leaning over the table, Lena once again shook Kara’s hand as a goodbye.

“If you get the job, you will get a call by tomorrow afternoon.”

After Kara left the backroom, she sat back on the chair and took a sip from her cold cup of tea. Sam Arias, the assistant manager and Lena’s best friend, walked into the room and said...”How did the interview go?!?! Is she hot!”

“Sam!” Lena exclaimed. “She’s quite qualified but a little too...happy? Sunshiney? I don’t know.”

“Yeah yeah, you didn’t answer the second part of my question though,” Sam replied.

Emitting a small laugh in awkwardness, Lena stood up and gestured to Sam to follow her to the sales floor. They were on their way to check the store and make sure everything is okay before it closes for the night.

Picking up a few stray hangers from the ground and putting them on a rack, Sam asked, “So who are you planning to hire?”

Lena shrugged and said she needed to find more candidates.

Stopping in the middle of the store and facing Lena, Sam rolled her eyes. “You’re not going to easily find that perfect, overqualified, and submissive employee who wants to work a minimum wage job.” Putting her hands on her hips, she continued. “The store is already suffering so much because we’re understaffed. Do you know what I heard a customer say yesterday?”

“What?” She replied, in slight annoyance.

“That we’re slobs. Slobs, Lena. And the same lady gave us a one-star review on Google Maps. You know what happens when we have too many bad reviews. Corporate will fire you.”

Lena let out a slow sigh and dusted off some fuzz that stuck to her sleeve.

“Fine. I’ll call back the sunshine fashion design girl after work.”

As soon as the clock hit 8, the managers and the employees walked up to the tiny computer in the backroom and lined up to sign out. After everyone’s badges were scanned, they walked out the front door and locked it. Waving goodbye to everyone, Lena walked to her matte black G-Wagon. Sitting in the driver's seat, she pulled out her work phone and pressed on a contact named “Interviewee #4”

After 2 dial tones, Kara picked up.
“Congratulations. You got the job. Can you start tomorrow?”
