Work Text:
It had been a few years since a snow storm had hit Thunder Mesa, especially one this severe. When Melanie was little, she'd enjoy watching the snow fall from her window, then go out and play in it with Jasper and Anna, or on a rare occasion, her parents too.
But now she was older, snowmen just weren't as intriguing as they had been before, and snow storms just meant staying inside sipping tea by the fire. After awhile it became rather boring, and the young woman longed for something to do, but she knew her parents wouldn't let her go out, especially since it was late, and the air was growing colder.
Melanie placed her empty tea cup on a tray and flopped back onto her bed, wondering what she could do for entertainment. Maybe she'd reread one of the books in the library, tend to some of the flowers in the conservatory or-
Tap Tap
Her thoughts were interrupted by the somewhat familiar sound of something hitting her window, Melanie sat up and pushed open her frosted window to see her Fiancé standing below, one arm cocked indicating that he was about to toss another pebble up before she appeared.
"You're going to catch a cold if you stay out there for too long." Melanie remarked, a small smile gracing her face. Even though he had done this several times before and hadn't been seen (as far as she knew) by anyone, Melanie still worried every time. It was already risky for him to sneak into the grounds, but to come into her room after dark? She didn't want to think about what would happen to Jake if someone found out.
"Well then, maybe I should come inside."
"Hm, maybe you should." Stepping away from the window for a moment, Melanie went to grab a rope ladder, something she'd secretly constructed a few months after they begun courting, tied it around the curtain pole and threw it down.
Once Jake was safely inside and Melanie had put the ladder away, she invited him to sit down next to her on the edge of her bed.
"I have to ask, what are you doing coming to see me during a storm, you could've waited a few days y'know?"
"Yes, but I knew you'd probably be bored, a-and," Jake pulled out a small cardboard box kept closed with a simple blue ribbon, "I wanted to give you this before Christmas."
"Oh, Jake, you didn't have to-"
"I know, I know, but I just wanted to give you something special."
Of course it was normal during Christmas time to give gifts, but Melanie made it clear early on that she didn't need them, she had enough of that from her former suitors.
Melanie untied the bow, setting it aside before removing the lid to reveal a golden heart-shaped locket inside. And it was real, being her father's daughter, she could tell.
"I thought we could put our wedding portraits in there."
"How-How did you afford this?" Melanie gaped. Although she knew that wasn't what someone should ask when receiving a gift, it was just the first thing that came to mind. The locket contrasted the silver alloy ring upon her finger, the one Jake had worked extremely hard for and still worried wasn't good enough for Miss Ravenswood.
"Oh, uh, I didn't buy it actually, It's a family heirloom. It belonged to my mother, and my grandmother, and her mother before her. Technically I was supposed to wait to give you this after we married but, I dunno, I just felt like I should give it to you now."
Over the years the young heiress had been given many different gifts, most of which had been made of gold, and some even incrested with the finest of gems, but none held a candle to this locket.
Everything she'd been given had no meaning behind it, well, other than 'I think you're rich and beautiful so I want to give you this so you'll marry me' or 'I want everyone to know you're better and richer than them so wear this'. But with the Evans family locket, there was true love behind it, something which she'd been denied so long.
"It's beautiful, Darling. I love it... Thank you." Mélanie pulled him close and pressed a gentle kiss upon his lips.
Neither had any idea that their wedding portrait would never be placed inside the locket, after all, you would need a wedding for that.
