Work Text:
Megumi had been watching the sleeping woman for forty minutes now. She should have been awake ten minutes prior, but it seemed like yesterday’s moving in had exhausted her, so he decided not to wake her up and let her rest. The lady was fast asleep, her head resting on her folded right hand. Her amber hair that contrasted with the white sheets swirled to and fro, strands falling across her face. He didn’t do anything, nor did he try to tuck the strands on her face behind her ear like he always does. He just kept staring at the beautiful woman he can proudly claim as his.
She stretched her arms, accidentally punching him in the face. She didn’t even wake up when he grunted, flinching from the punch. Instead, she continued her sleep with one of her arms on his face. He chuckled at her doings, taking her hand off his face and into his own. He held her hand gently, warmth spreading through the intertwined fingers. She snuggled closer to the source of the warmth, demanding more comfort, which of course was welcomed wholeheartedly. He put his arms around her and rest his head on top of hers, lingering there for a while.
Megumi initially did not believe he would admit to himself, that at this time he missed Nobara's voice. It's strange, he misses her voice even though before they both fell asleep, they were still talking to each other. It's not like they were miles apart. Heck, their bodies are even touching each other's right now. Not seeing any signs that his lover would wake up, the man sighed, his hands cupped her face and lifted her head. He squished both of her cheeks with his thumb and index finger, forcing the girl to open her eyes. She opened her eyes only to shot him with her glare, then proceed to bury her face on the crook of his neck and go back to sleep. Or so he thought. A smile spread across Megumi's face, he couldn't help but plant a kiss on top of her head and leaned his head on top of hers.
“I missed you, dumbass.” He said casually.
She didn’t answer him, but she smiled and snuggled even closer. She knew the man said so because he thought she was back asleep. Had she responded with a single word, he must have taken the words back with whatever weird reasons he had just for him not to look soft. She loves him for that, looking and acting cool and fierce every time while he is actually a softie. She can hear his low chuckle, then a relieved sigh, before he pulled off the hug and sat on the bed with his back on her. She opened her eyes, stared at the man’s back without making a sound.
"You know, seeing you first thing in the morning, I'm really grateful that you’re here with me." His sapphire eyes looking at the sunlight peeking through the curtains. She wasn’t sure if he knows that she was awake. But she didn’t answer him for the rest of his speech. "I'm glad now that you're here with me every day, I can watch you sleep and do all the stupid things you do every time. You’re a pain in the ass, you know."
Her brows furrowed at his statement. She almost burst out a protest, but he proceeded, “but I know I’m a pain in your ass too. That makes us even.”
A smile began spreading on her face. She closed her eyes as the man turned around and left a kiss on her forehead. The kiss felt a few seconds longer than usual, and she could feel his lips curved into a smile on her forehead. He stroked Nobara's forehead, down to her cheek, and kissed her lips quickly. It was undeniable that the brown-haired girl loved the gentle touch that Megumi gave her, the blood rushing to her cheeks, making them red as boiled crab.
Megumi got up and walked out of the room, closed the door slowly so as not to make a sound that might wake Nobara.
She opened her eyes as she heard the doorknob click. After her eyes confirmed that the jet-haired man was nowhere to be seen, she sat up and tried to catch her breath. It never made to her sense how they have been together for years now, and although she knows they love each other, she still hasn't got used to how sweet and gentle that cold man can be. Her heart hasn't got used to him being so endearing and loving, it always races abnormally and leaves her breathless.
When she finally got hold of herself, she decided to catch up with the man who was busy looking for something in the kitchen cabinet.
"Hey," she said, trying to sound like she just woke up, "what are you looking for?"
"Uh... Did you see my chamomile tea? I forgot where it was." He said without turning to face her, his hands and eyes still busy searching among the cans and boxes of various other types of tea.
"Do you not remember you ran out of it last night?" she replied as she approached the man. She almost snapped at the male because he didn't turn off the stove even though the kettle has been whistling, indicating the water was boiling.
“I did?” his hand stopped, and he looked at her.
She rolled her eyes at him and nodded. Her hand stretched, signaling him to hand her his mug. He did so and put an earl grey tea bag right before she poured the boiling water into the ceramic mug. She slid the mug to his side and put the kettle back on the cooled-down stove.
Megumi walked to the dining table, sat down, and sipped his tea. He almost choked when he found Nobara drinking milk straight from the carton in front of the fridge while standing.
"How many times do I ha—"
"Oops. Sorry." She chuckled, returned the milk carton to the fridge, and walked cheerfully to the dining table, sitting across from Megumi. He glared at her, his brows curled in annoyance. She smiled and leaned across the table to kiss him.
They started the day with light conversation, about the beautiful sunshine that shines through their apartment windows, about buying chamomile tea at the supermarket later that afternoon and sharing house chores. They decided to take turns washing dishes, doing the laundry, and taking out the trash, Nobara would change the sheets and sweep, while Megumi mopped. After deciding on house chores split, Megumi was enjoying his warm cup of tea while reading the news on his cellphone. Nobara sat quietly, her hands folded on the table, eyes fixed on the figure in front of her. They stayed silent for a moment.
“Hey, Megumi, I wanna ask you something.” She broke the silence.
“Yeah?” He looked up from his phone. His sapphire eyes met her caramel ones.
“Do you always talk sweetly to me when I sleep?” she leaned forward, smiling teasingly at him.
“No,” he answered firmly, leaning forward to meet her in the middle of the table, leaving only a spare inch between their faces. He returned her teasing smile, which made her raise her brow.
“You sure? Ah, or am I just dreaming?” she asked defiantly.
“I know you weren’t asleep, dumbass.” He answered in confidence.
She blinked a few times before she realized she was blushing. She pulled her head back nervously.
“Ah, look, you’re blushing again.” He said teasingly, his index finger booped her nose, making her redder.
“Oh, shut up. You are grateful I’m here, aren’t you?” She closed the distance between them again, gaining confidence when Megumi didn't answer in three seconds. Instead, he looked deep into her eyes with his starry blue eyes, sharp yet warm and endearing.
Kugisaki Nobara always believes in herself, that she is a strong woman. She can look after and protect herself and her beloved ones. She loves herself for that. Among the few weaknesses she has, the owner of this pair of sapphire eyes in front of her is one of her biggest weaknesses, and strangely enough, she believes he is also her strength. The only person that can make her lose control of herself, and sometimes make her knees lose the strength just to stand up. The only one who was able to make her heart beats wildly as if it wanted to jump out of her chest.
“I am.” He answered confidently, smiling lopsidedly.
They stared at each other for another minute before Nobara grunted and threw her hands in the air in frustration while yelling, “stop doing that to me!”
“Doing what?” he pulled back, leaning on the back of the chair while looking at his girlfriend confusedly.
“Making my heart goes wild!” she grunted again, looking away to avoid his eyes. He let out a laugh, making her even more flustered.
He breathed out a long sigh and went silent for a second before leaning forward. His head leaned on a hand as he smiled sincerely at the woman.
“I love you, Kugisaki,” he said casually.
“Stop it.” She grunted, both hands covering her red face.
His smile grew wider.
“And if I’m lucky enough, someday I’ll make you a Fushiguro, too.”
“SHUT UP.”
Little did she know, he also blushed while thinking about her being a Fushiguro.
