Ushijima didn't have any friends, so when nobody came to his birthday party, he feels like he shouldn't be surprised. He is, however, surprised when Oikawa comes as the only guest and the two boys start to become friends from then on.
And every year, Ushijima and Oikawa spend his birthday together, even though they're on different volleyball teams and even though Oikawa seems to hate him. Because it's the only day they can pretend everything is fine between them.
