A Pikachu clock falls to the ground, dented by the number of times it’s been hit. A similar head raises from the tacky covers to see what they hit this time. With blurry eyes, Kaminari picks up the clock and reads the time, holding a face as it wronged him. It did force him out of a great dream of talking with...never mind.
“OH! Shoot!” Racing out of bed, he runs to his closet for his uniform. With a quick change and hair combed, he rushes down the stairs. It was all for a loss though, Iida was there in his hand chopping glory, giving a lecture to Sero and Mina already about being early.
Slipping by, not being noticed thankfully, he started heading to the kitchen. Pulling out some pop tarts he quickly scarfed them down. With the final bite, he chokes. ‘Of all times to die.’ He thinks while trying to get a grasp of air. Suddenly the pop tart flung out of his throat. Gasping for air, he looks to see who his savior is. “Are you ok, Kaminari-kun?” Standing there, in all his shining glory, was Midoriya with a worried look on his face.
Straightening up, Kaminari quickly stamped out a response, “Ya, thanks for that Mido-bro!” Giving his charismatic thumbs up to go with that, for good measure of course, with a smile on his face. Midoriya responded with his bright smile, “No problem, try not to eat so fast, ok?” He asks meekly.
“Will do!” Looking out, the other two were nearing the end of Iida’s lecture. “I’m gonna get going to my buds, see you later Midoriya!” With a wave and easy escape from that embarrassment, Kaminari starts to talk to the bathrooms. Iida finishes with the lecture right before Kaminari enters.
“Kaminari, it is irresponsible to do your routine before eating a full breakfast. This will cause rot to appear on your teeth, which will lead to cavities and those are not becoming of a future hero!” With a sudden spark of an idea, a spark came from his head, he smiles. “I just finished my breakfast, so I’m heading to brush my teeth!” This seems to buffer Iida. “My apologies Kaminari,” bowing perfectly though he nearly hits his head on Kaminari, “I did not realize this. Please continue with your morning.”
With him walking away, Kaminari sees Mina’s and Sero’s betrayed faces. This makes him giggle, knowing it was from him not getting a full lecture, then rushes to the bathroom to finish his morning routine.
With a quick morning for everyone, the normal classes slow down their day somewhat. A normal day so far for this class, something that could only mean disaster in the end. With every class that does not cause massive pain, or gives random tests, class 1-A gets more and more on edge. Even heroics doesn’t catch them off guard!
That all ends when a package arrives for the entire class. This was usually how they ended up getting things from shipping, so no one was any the wiser of what lay inside a small box. When the class enters the common room to receive their mail they all either start to sit around on the couches or leave the kitchen to join the rest.
When everyone was seated, Yaoyorozu and Iida started calling out for the receivers. “Uruarka, your mochi has arrived!” “Sero, a box of comics are here!” Till they reached the end of the pile. “A book… Iida-san,” Yaoyorozu turns to Iida with the final box in hand, “Do you know of anyone getting this book?” Holding up a book with a green marble half on one side and a bee on the other with a red kazoo in the middle, the words Viridian: The Green Guide underneath it. “No, I do not!” Iida states in a surprised voice, “Perhaps someone forgot to mention it to me!”
With the book in hand, Iida walks around the room and asks every classmate if it was something they ordered. No one had, this made Iida go back to the order form and check if it was an additional charge they would need to get back, or if it was a gift that came with something in the box. It was neither, this caused confusion to both reps. Yaoyorozu turns the book over and starts to read the back. Within a few seconds, she looks ready to puke. “All you all right, Yaoyorozu? Is there something wrong with the book? It is a trap!?” Iida, gradually getting louder after each question, asks.
“No, it’s not a trap. At least, I don’t think it is. But the summary of the book is very disturbing. I think Deku needs to see this first.” With a pale face, Yaoyorozu walks over to Deku, who, as always, is in front of the TV analyzing hero fights. Tapping the area next to the notebook, having learned from an incident with Denki to not touch him when in this state, she gets his attention. Turning the book’s back to him she asks for him to read it.
“I’d be happy too!” He responds in a cheerful voice. Reaching over, he grabs it and instantly becomes pale, turning green as he continues. “What...is this?” He was finally able to ask, after a large amount of choking. “We don’t know,” Yaoyorozu replies, “We can attempt to get rid of it, but we don’t know if that will trigger any sort of trap.” Seeing the logic in her words, Deku comes up with another idea, “What if I keep it in my room, since it is about me, and just not read it!”
Both of them agree to this arrangement. Yaoyorozu leaves to tell Iida what is going to happen to it, and Miroriya gathers all of his supplies to rake to his room. He hides the book within his bookshelf, everyone seeming to forget it was even there.
\\
“Truth or dare, Mido-bro,” asks Kirishima. It had been a week since the book had come in, leaving the minds of all who were aware of what it held. Some people, “I’ll do… dare!”, never forget their curiosity. “I dare you to read a chapter of that book you got last week! It looked cool!” This makes Deku along with the reps to pale. “No-I mean, you wouldn’t like it.” He stampers out an excuse. “You’ll never know, we might like it!” Mina calls out.
With a shuddered breath, Deku leaves and returns with the book in his hands. “I haven’t read it myself, so I’ll start with the first chapter.” On this note, everyone in the room kept quiet and listened to the story.

Chapter Text
With a shuddered breath, Deku leaves and returns with the book in his hands. “I haven’t read it myself, so I’ll start with the first chapter.” On this note, everyone in the room kept quiet and listened to the story.
//
"Toshinori glanced down at the boy as rain fell all around them."
"What's All Might doing there?" Everyone glares at Mina for disrupting the story. Deku clears his throat and continues.
"Yes, the boy definitely had a heroic spirit, but just being near the power of one of Toshinori’s full-strength punches was enough to practically knock him out. If he were to have that power inside him...his body wouldn’t be able to handle it, he’d break! Giving a weak body so much power would be irresponsible, no matter how strong his spirit was. Besides, Toshinori’s power was running out, he needed a strong successor. The boy would be able to find other ways to help people."
'Who could this be talking about?' Deku wonders as he looks at the next paragraph. He drops the book, backing away from it. He starts to breathe hard, edging near a panic attack. "With worried-filled looks, the Deku squad tries to comfort Deku, no questions asked. The Bakusquad, on the other hand, look at each other and then the book. Mina goes and continues where he left off.
“You’re just a quirkless failure that wouldn’t even cut it as a rent-a-cop Deku!” Kacchan screamed.
"Bakugou/Baku-bro!" Everyone screamed. 'No...no...they can't know...please don't...they'll find out I(am still quirkless) was quirkless...why and I having these thoughts?' Deu breaks out of his mind, finding his friends surrounding him in worry. "I'm fine now, sorry!" he smiles. Mina continues to find the extent this person wrote badly about her friend.
“You didn’t help me! You did nothing! I don’t owe you anything! You got that?”
"It does sound like him..."Todoroki commented, looking at Deku in hopes to find why this affected him as much as it has.
Izuku nodded fearfully as Kacchan stalked off. He was right, Izuku really hadn’t done anything except get in the way. But at least he’d tried. It had been...weirdly exhilarating, that one moment of risking his life for someone else before giving up on his dreams forever.
"The fuck?" No one knew who said it! Everyone was so shocked at this that not even Iida tried to find the culprit.
If you wanna be a hero so bad, take a swan dive off the roof and pray you’ll be born with a quirk in the next life.
Who said that? Kirishima thought. Despite the little amount read, everyone was enraptured with the book. Everyone, including a local cryptic, was entranced by this. Though Deku was quaking in his spot.
Izuku shook his head. No, Kacchan was just being mean,
"Bakugou!?!?!" the class screamed simultaneously.
Izuku didn’t actually want to die, right?
"Oh no..." Yaoyorozu muttered.
That’s not why he’d run in to stop that villain. The rush was just because he’d deluded himself into thinking he was helping Kacchan. And there were plenty of other ways to help people, just like All Might had said. He could become a policeman!
You wouldn’t even cut it as a rent-a-cop.
Mina stops and looks so chocked up. "Maybe we should stop, what even is this Mido?" Deku looked up, pale as a vampire, "I don't know, it appeared in the mail. No one ordered it, and it contains many messed up themes." He took a breath, "I can just put it back where it was..." He trailed off. "No," this time everyone looks at Iida, who had spoken, "We all know that our curiosity of the chapter will make us do irrational things. Let's finish the chapter, then report it to the teachers." Everyone saw the logic in his words. The question became, "Who wants to read it?", everyone looks at Sato, who asked the question.
They looked at each other, pleading eyes to not be the chosen one. Suddenly, Kaminari got up and left. This broke the tension, the squads getting together to convert of who will do the reading. Not a few minutes later, they hear the elevator ring. Kaminari stepping out with a pen in his hands, this made everyone confused. Kaminari takes the book and places the pen's tip on it.
No,
A perfect male storytelling voice came out of the pen. "I use this to help me focus as I study!" Kaminari says proudly, "It was quirk made to put any emotion in the voice to fit for whatever is being read." The class becomes thankful for this, so no one will get choked up as they read. With a nod, Kaminari runs the pen tip over the words.
it would probably be best to do some research when he got home. There had to be other people out there that realized they couldn’t be heroes, right? Maybe he could do some digging online and find out what careers they went into?
He walked into the apartment and was immediately almost knocked off his feet as his mom ran to hug him, “Oh, Izuku, baby! I was so worried! What were you thinking?”
“I guess I wasn’t.” Izuku chuckled. “Sorry, Mom.”
After finally convincing his crying mother that he was, in fact, alive and well, he took a shower and then sat down with his laptop to look into alternate careers. The question now was what to type into the search engine.
What to do when you can’t be a hero.
The class's more empathetic kids started tearing up.
The search algorithm must be designed to search for any word in the entered phrase because the top results were all interview clips from various pro-heroes giving the anyone can be a hero speech. Lies. Halfway down the page, however, Izuku finally saw a result that looked halfway like what he was actually searching for.
He clicked on the link and it took him to a thread on one of the hero forums. A user a few years ago had asked, “I just took the exams for several different hero courses and didn’t get in. Being a hero was all I ever wanted to do, so what should I do now that it isn’t an option.”
Well, Izuku hadn’t quite gotten to the point of actually taking the UA entrance exam, but the rest applied pretty well. He scrolled through the various answers. A lot of them just offered condolences and told the asker to talk to the career counselor at their school. Izuku didn’t think that’d help him much though, considering that when he’d met with his school counselor last year, the woman had told him to consider being a garbage man. Not that that wasn’t a completely valid career, but he knew she only suggested it because he was quirkless.
Izuku wanted a job where he could actually help people.
Classic Deku Uraraka thought.
Hmmm, a few people suggested being a doctor, but Izuku didn’t think he was smart enough for that. His classmates were always telling him that he was a stupid Deku, after all. A policeman might be a good option, but then again, Kachan was probably right. If he didn’t have what it took to be a hero, why would he have what it took to be a cop? He was just about to close the browser and go to bed when a comment with a large thread caught his eye.
Well, if you didn’t get into the hero course, you can always be a vigilante.
This is getting interesting. A spectator thought.
Most of the replies to that were exactly what Izuku suspected they’d be, basically bullying the commentator for suggesting something so obviously illegal. Izuku shouldn’t even be thinking about this, he was in enough trouble for running into the situation earlier but...wait? Wasn’t that vigilantism too? They probably let him off easy because he’s a kid and it was obviously the first time he’d done something like that. But that thrill of almost dying to save someone else…
Oh...my Hagukure thought, having nearly done this herself.
Izuku opened another tab. It wouldn’t hurt to do some more research on vigilantes, right? The more he learned, the more he’d understand that this was a completely stupid idea that he absolutely should not do. It was obviously stupidly dangerous and had a very good chance of killing him!
Right?
No Todoroki thought, remembering the Sports Festival fight.
There wasn’t a whole lot of information on particular vigilantes, at least not as much as there was on the legal heroes. Heroism was often based on fame, but apparently, most vigilantes didn’t get very popular. But popularity wasn’t very important to Izuku, he didn’t really need to be popular to be happy. The fame was for people like Kacchan who deserved it.
Could this have happened in our world? Wait! Deku has a quirk here! With a renewed sense of relief, Sero kept listening.
Then, around midnight, Izuku read a research paper about a group a few years ago called the Nuruhata Vigilantes. It was by a college student who apparently hadn’t gone on to do any more serious research, but it did give a decent overview of vigilantism in general and how illegal heroes were seen by the general population.
According to the Japanese government, Vigilantism is defined as using one’s quirk in an unauthorized act of heroism.
This makes Kaminari pause his pen. "Wasn't he quirkless in this book, kero?" The thought was in everyone's minds, but only Tsu said had the ability to say it.
The vigilantes of Nuruhata definitely fit the bill, but do people see them as evil, like the government proclaims or as good….
Izuku read the first sentence a total of five times before looking up the actual law. At least according to the government, quirkless people couldn’t technically be vigilantes...wait, he couldn’t be a vigilante!
Izuku didn’t end up getting any sleep that night, since, by the time he’d finished reading all the various laws on self-defense and quirk usage, the sun was already rising. He should still probably find some way to conceal his identity since he didn’t want to make his mother worry, but...well, there was no law preventing him from risking his life to help people.
"That's the end of chapter 1, guys," Kaminari said, breaking the tension that had formed. Where everyone had been stone still, now people were making their way to Deku, who was being smothered in affection.
Iida grabbed the book Kaminari dropped and quickly left the dorms. Knowing who would be up at this hour, he shutters. Quickly, Iida arrives at an office, raising his hand to knock. The door opens as if a ghost alerted the person inside.
"Good evening, Iida. May I see the book?" Nezu asks. Iida gratefully gave it to him. "I will take care of this matter. You go back and concert your friends" With a perfect bow, Iida rushes to get back to the dorm. All while being very bitter about breaking curfew, even if it was for a good reason.
You were quite an interesting book to listen to. Now then, while I may know this is fake. Some truth might be behind this story. Nezu goes to his computer and starts to follow the records of Midoriya Izuku to the beginning of his life. Getting madder and madder the deeper he goes.
