Magnetic

Summary:

magnetic, adj.

The ability to attract.

Notes:

Hey! I don't know what came over me when this plot popped into my head one day. I spent my days off finishing this and I feel so freaking awkward about having to write a lot of dialogues. It such a bizarre feeling for me lols. I've been fascinated by EarthMix's chemistry after watching ATOTS and I've especially been attached to Mix with his acting and him looking like Jackson Wang on certain angles. I hope you guys will enjoy reading this! My brain feels like spaghetti after spending a lot of my time writing and typing away.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Opening a veterinary clinic in a place like Phuket wasn’t something that his parents would have wanted for him. They had thoughts of helping him setup and settle in Bangkok where it was bustling with life and with potential clients like celebrities along with their pets to visit his facility but Mix Sahaphap Wongratch had a different plan otherwise.

He wanted a quiet place, somewhere serene and peaceful.

Bangkok already has plenty of clinics and hospitals dedicated to pets and most of his batch mates from Chulakongkorn University were all there.

Mix wanted a breath of fresh air. A new environment. He wanted to start anew.

Although his life as an intern in Chiang Mai was memorable and working with the resident vets there was something he enjoyed very much, especially being playful and loving with the elephants, but he felt deep within him that he must be somewhere else. The mountains and spectacular places to visit in Chiang Mai were matters that he couldn’t forget but unfortunately, for Mix, there’s one tiny detail that was missing. There were no beaches in Chiang Mai and Mix had this funny feeling in his bones that he had to be near a body of water in order to fill that gap he was feeling inside. He had to be somewhere by the sea.

And that’s why he came up with the decision to be in Phuket.

+++

It was a humble beginning for Mix. After an approved loan from the bank, he chose the location himself, somewhere that is just a 4 minute car ride from the Phuket Zoo or might take someone 15 to 20 minutes if they decided to walk on foot. The space wasn’t that big but it wasn’t that cramped either. He had a small living area just right above the clinic and around 10 people could stay on the ground floor at the same time. And even though his parents were willing to give him funds in order for him to have a bigger room for both his living space and the clinic (and he really do appreciate his parents being thoughtful about the offer) but the young vet declined saying that he wanted to start from the bottom because he always had wondered what it felt like to start from scratch, from nothing.

And since this is just a start-up, Mix managed to hire 2 full time workers. One was, Nammon Krittanai Arsalprakit, a talkative and loud biology graduate who focuses on animal behaviour as his veterinary technician. And Khaotung Thanawat Ratanakitpaisan, a timid and quiet boy, who used to work for the Phuket Zoo as the receptionist. They were perhaps, what you call, an unusual team but the young doctor wasn’t bothered by the thought of it at all. He thinks that the three of them were all unique in their own way.

On their opening day, which wasn’t grand and all out because Mix had to consider and keep track of his expenses, they gave out free check-ups, vaccinations and pet vitamins to any customer who would visit their clinic. There weren’t much who went but it still meant a lot to Mix that there were a few who decided to drop by.

There was an old lady who had a bunch of cats with her that she had to place them all in a wooden push cart and she still had this happy smile on her face after her visit to the clinic even if she struggled with her load.

A monk from a nearby temple who went on his daily walk with his puppy happened to have passed by and gave them a visit. They received a blessing from the monk in return.

A store owner who lives right across from their clinic and who doesn’t own a pet but mentioned she’ll probably have one soon knowing that there’s a pet centre opposite her place, gave them treats as a welcoming and congratulatory gift.

And last but not the least, was a little girl who was recently gifted with a pet rabbit because she kept begging for it and who also asked sweets from the trio after the check-up because she was told by her parents that every time she visits a clinic, she’d be given free candy.

Yeahp, that was about it and no one else. It was better than nothing and Mix together with his team kept their positive attitude until the end of the day.

“Why did you decided to become a Veterinarian, Doc?” Nammon asked with no hesitation as he finished taking a sip of his beer.

When there were no other customers who went and visited their clinic on their opening day, Mix wanted to treat his only two staff so they went ahead and closed early.

“Well..” Mix started as he played with the food on his plate, “My Mom was really frank when I told her I’d want to become a Veterinarian. She asked, ‘Why become a doctor to animals when you can be a doctor to humans?’, and I couldn’t really give her an answer at that time you know?”

Both Nammon and Khaotung were all ears as this was the first time they’ve heard the young doctor talk about his life. He was usually giving out orders or telling them what to do and of course, they also needed to witness a different side of their boss.

“But then, one day, I finally had an answer for her” Mix smiled softly as he recalled that day he went up to his mother to tell her the reason why he wanted to become a doctor to animals, “You know how when people get hurt and they can scream for help or dial an emergency line so someone could come to their rescue? Well, for animals, they can only howl in pain or remain silent until it subsides. How frustrating would it be when you want to express something or call for help but you don’t have the means or even the words on how to convey it? Sure, animals can fend for themselves because they were born to survive in the wild but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need aid. And I wanted to be that aid, I wanted to be that human that could at least understand and sympathize with their pain”

“So, you wanted to be like Dr. Doolittle?” Khaotung innocently asked and Mix and Nammon had to burst out laughing when they heard that. That certainly cleared the dramatic mood of their conversation and the atmosphere felt lighter.

Mix had to wipe a tear from his eye because he laughed too much, “Well, you could say that but I can’t understand or communicate well with animals like Dr. Doolittle. At least, I try to”

“It’s funny how the three of us ended up in this place because of our love for animals” Nammon snickered taking another swig of his beer, “I really thought that dogs lived longer like how humans do. And when I was young kid, imagine how horrified I was when my Dad told me that they only have around 10 to 13 years of life span. I threw a fit because I thought my Dad was lying and I wouldn’t leave my dog’s side after knowing about it. I was scared and I felt like 13 years was too short”

“How about you, Khaotung? You used to work at the zoo. What’s your story?” Mix asked the youngest of the three.

“I have always been fascinated and would want to visit the Safari someday” Khaotung began as he fiddled with his fingers, “I’ve watched National Geographic channel when I was little. I love seeing all sorts of animals appear on TV. I have dreamed of working for them if given the chance”

Mix was smiling from ear to ear after hearing what his staff has to say and he was glad that he picked the right people to be with for this new journey that he just established. Raising his own bottle of booze in the air, the young veterinarian proposed a toast, “To our dreams of helping and treating more animals in the future!”

Both Nammon and Khaotung clinked their bottles with their boss and yelled back a ‘Cheers!’ in unison.

The look of surprise on their faces the very next day was indescribable as the trio were left speechless of the number of customers that were waiting outside their clinic. Well, it wasn’t a lot but it was more compared to the number of people who visited them on their opening day. Through word of mouth, the cat lady, the monk, the store owner and the little girl along with her parents told the town of the newly opened animal clinic and how not only were the staff extremely accommodating and great at their job, they were all exceptionally good looking too.

“It’s going to be a long day for us then, Doc” Nammon laughed as he started cracking his knuckles and his neck to prep himself for what’s ahead.

Mix could feel his heart swell with happiness seeing the queue of customers and had to bite down a smile, “Khaotung, kindly assist all of them and give them the registration forms so we could start”

Khaotung nodded his head excitedly as he made a beeline towards the guests who were waiting, “Yes, Doc. I’m on it!”

Things went well for Mix and his team after that. People continuously visited their clinic and the young veterinarian received praises for doing a magnificent work and that even though he only has 2 staff members, both were very competent too. Some clients from other clinics decided to transfer to him as well after hearing from Dr. Wongratch’s loyal customers that after just one visit, the young veterinarian will surely give you advice and tips that’s truly worth what you pay him for.

“Are you married, Doc? Your spouse surely is one lucky person to have such a young and handsome husband who’s a well-known doctor in this area” an elderly woman who has a pet dachshund giggled as he watched Mix examine her hotdog looking canine.

The young doctor was taken aback by the question but managed to remain his cool as he proceeded with the check-up, “Oh, I’m not married, maam. I’m single” he gave the little dog pets just below its ear and the dog liked it a lot judging by the tongue that was hanging out of its mouth.

“Oh my! That’s some news! I will surely tell my friends about this. We might be able to help you find a potential lover around here” The elderly woman laughed while wiggling her eyebrows, “Or perhaps, they may come and visit you here in your clinic. You never know!”

It’s been almost 2 months since Mix had settled down in Phuket and he had made quite a few connections. He was earning enough to pay both Nammon and Khaotung while also slowly paying back his bank loan and still keeping the clinic up and running. Thankful for his devoted clients and their undying support, Mix was able to cope with everything. He didn’t feel that he missed Bangkok that much. It almost felt like Phuket was going to be his new home. On his days off, he would remind himself that he’d go to every beach in the area one at a time. And somehow, that feeling he had about having to be somewhere near a body of water, like the sea, started making sense. Mix knew that this was the place to be – to feel the breeze of the air caressing your face, to sense that there are grains of sand between your toes and to experience your skin being softly kissed by the sun.

This is what it feels like to be alive.

It was broadcasted on the news the night before that a strong storm will hit Phuket and everyone was advised to stay in their respective homes in order to avoid getting harmed. Not wanting to risk the safety of his staff and clients, Mix decided to close his clinic and moved the booked appointments to some other time, when it’s secure for people to come out then. As heavy rain started to pour and the loud winds could be heard hitting against the walls of where he was staying, Mix prayed for everyone’s welfare and protection and after that, fixed himself a cup of warm chocolate as he had plans to watch a movie to get him through the ongoing typhoon. As he was about to settle himself and lounge on his couch to begin watching the film in his laptop, some rock hit his window and Mix ignored it at first thinking that it was the strong wind that caused it. But another rock was thrown again and this time, the young vet didn’t assume that it was just a coincidence. He then heard a muffled voice calling. Someone was shouting downstairs and being the curious person that he was, he decided to peek out of his window. Mix could make out a figure standing outside his clinic and feeling some sense of urgency, he quickly went down to find out who it was.

Mix hurriedly opened the door to his clinic, not really caring if it is someone he knows or not. And if this stranger he was going to let in is some kind of a creep and a murderer, he didn’t have time to consider things. There’s a typhoon for crying out loud! Who in their right mind would go out in this type of weather?

The stranger immediately barged in and Mix was able to close the door so as not to get wet by the rain. When he turned around, he found a tall, tan and gorgeous looking man wearing blue beach shorts that clung to his skin and a black hoodie that he presumed was the perfect fit for the person’s build but now looked like it was a size too big because it got drenched in the rain. Before Mix could ask who he was, the stranger spoke first.

“I need your help. Please” the unknown person sounded so confused and panic was evident on his face. Mix was about to ask if what was it that he could help him with. He opened his mouth to query when the tall man showed him a black pet carrier stopping him from asking further.

Oh, he was carrying that? Mix did not notice it though. Was he distracted by what he saw earlier? Of course, not!

“It’s m.. my cat. Something’s wrong with my cat” The drenched person stammered cutely and Mix had to blink himself out of his stupor and decided against hitting himself on the head. Focus! Focus!!!

“Oh please, let me” Mix managed to get the pet carrier out of the owner’s grasp as he made his way towards the examination table. He was relieved to find that the cat was in dry condition. The inside of the carrier was proofed and the fluffy feline was also wrapped with a waterproof pet blanket. The young vet looked over to the cat’s owner and smiled, “It’s good to know you made sure that she’s all wrapped up”.

“How did you know she’s a she?” the handsome owner asked, amazed by Mix’s observation skills.

“I can always tell from a Siamese’s face whether it’s a he or she” Mix low key bragged as he carefully detached the upper part of the carrier to get a good view of the cat. He made sure that the cat was facing away from him as he slowly uncovered it from the waterproof blanket. He waited for a moment for the cat to settle down and get comfortable and when the feline looked cozy, he started with his examination. Mix started building rapport with the cat as he first examined the least stressful parts. He began talking and coaxing the cat saying that it’s okay as he stroked its torso to assess its coat and body condition. And when his hands went down further to check for any injuries, Mix abruptly stopped.

“I actually forgot to ask you. What made you think that something is wrong with your cat?”

The good looking owner who was across from Mix and silently observing the examination with his arms crossed, answered with, “Well, she’s not eating her food and doesn’t seem to like her usual treats” he paused to think for more reasons, “And she’s been throwing up too”.

Mix nodded his head, “Okay. Since when have you noticed these particular symptoms?”

“Just last week” The tall man was rubbing his temples trying to formulate his thoughts, “At first, I thought that she was being overdramatic and mad at me but today, I couldn’t help but fret so I had to take her here”

“I understand” The young vet continued to stroke the cat trying to keep it calm as he continued asking questions to the other person, “How long has your cat been with you, if you don’t mind me asking?”

The man in the black hoodie tried recalling, “Hmmm.. I adopted her not long ago. I think, she’s been with me for almost a month”

Mix pursed his lips as he looked over to the Siamese cat, “No wonder”. Funnily enough, the cat responded with a meow as if agreeing to what Mix had in mind.

The cat’s owner looked pretty shocked and offended by the sudden connection between his pet and the vet. It was like they both knew something that he wasn’t aware of, “What do you mean?”

The young vet and his pet cat stared at the owner as if he’s the most clueless person in the entire world, “She’s pregnant”

“What?!” The cat’s owner yelped in surprise as he pointed an accusing finger at his pet, “I thought she was just fat!”

Mix saw how the cat rolled her eyes at the statement and he had to hold in his laughter. This pet-owner relationship he’s seeing right now was quite enthralling.

When Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri decided to adopt a cat that he found all alone and wandering by the beach, he was ready to take on a huge responsibility. Having a pet is somewhat similar to having a child, one has to take care and check on it from time to time. Although there are also differences between the two but you get the point. The cat, which he named Khluen by the way, managed to adapt to his way of living quite well. Being a surfing instructor, Earth was always under the sun and on the beach. Khluen doesn’t seem to mind waiting for him by the shore when he finishes with a lesson. Sometimes, she swims with him too just on the shallow surfaces which debunked the myth he believed about cats not being fond of water. They were quite the tandem and Earth thought that things will go smoothly for the two of them until Khluen started acting strangely. At first, he dismissed the thought that there was something going on with Khluen and she was just being a drama queen because she tends to act like it sometimes. But then, it gave him anxiety when he noticed that she wasn’t kidding and that something serious was really going on. When he got Khluen, Earth didn’t take her to the vet. He thought it wasn’t necessary. Now, he can’t believe that the first time he’s taking his cat to the vet would be the moment he’s also going to find out that she’s with kittens inside of her.

“I really thought that she was fat” Earth said it again as if he was convincing himself of something while looking at the monitor projecting the results of Khluen’s ultrasound.

“The moment you decided to take her in you should have had her checked. She’s on her third week of pregnancy now” the veterinarian commented as he proceeded to rub that thing (Earth doesn’t know what it’s called) on the feline’s stomach. “If you watch closely, you can also tell that her nipples have darkened and enlarged”

“I was told that a cat’s belly is what they consider as their most vulnerable part that’s why I avoided to touch her there as much as possible” Earth explained to the vet, “We’re still both warming up to each other I don’t want her to feel that I’ve violated her”

“But you’ve already insulted her when you said she’s fat” The veterinarian who’s been trying to hold in his laughter the entire time burst out laughing. Earth can’t help but laugh with him too because he was right.

Earth discovered that the young veterinarian’s name was Sahaphap Wongratch looking at the certificates displayed in the area. And for Earth, he was quite interesting especially with the way on how he handled Khluen earlier on his own. After performing the necessary examinations and wrapping up Khluen’s ultrasound, the first thing that Dr. Wongratch asked him was if he needed to change. That was when the surfer realized that he’s been drenched this entire time and he didn’t seem to have minded it. He was too caught up with the fact that he had to get Khluen to a vet as soon as possible that he’s not aware of the current state he was in. Embarrassed, Earth asked if he could also take a quick shower just to get rid of himself of the icky feeling he’s experiencing. The young vet was kind enough to inform him that the shower was upstairs.

“Just leave the door of the bathroom unlocked” Earth raised an eyebrow hearing this from the doctor and sensing that he misunderstood it, the doctor expounded, “I’ll leave you with a set of new clothes by the sink. I’ll take care with the rest here. Go ahead before you catch a cold” the veterinarian suggested as he arranged the tools he used back to their proper place.

Earth got out of the shower feeling fresh and clean and noticed that a pair of grey sweats and white shirt were neatly placed and waiting for him on the sink just like what that Doctor Wongratch said. He couldn’t help but smile at the thought of it.

Okay, so here it is. Mix doesn’t know if he made the right decision of actually letting this unknown person in his place but you know, he’s a Good Samaritan. He just can’t kick a pregnant cat and its owner out of his clinic not especially at this time of the day where a typhoon was visibly outside. He could let them stay until it has relented. And of course, he’s a potential client, a handsome one at that but yes, handsome or not he’s going to be a future client and well, Mix needed more of them. It’s a win-win situation for him then.

He heard the bathroom door open and saw that the stranger had changed to the set of clothes that he left for him. Mix had to stop himself from snickering seeing that the clothes he gave were a size too small, “It’s the biggest set of clothes I could find. I hope you don’t mind”

“Oh no, it’s fine. It’s better than being naked” the stranger commented absentmindedly as he was drying off his hair with a towel, “And I’m used to going commando so I also hope you don’t mind”

Mix fought the urge to look “there” and tried to keep his eyes straight, “Oh yes! I mean, no, I don’t!” He stuttered, “I was supposed to give you some but then, I don’t have brand new ones and I can’t lend you the ones I already used”

“It’s no big deal. You’re letting me and Khluen stay here because of the bad weather. Just the thought of that and your kindness, it’s already too much” The cat’s owner was now fixing his semi-wet hair as he shoots a small smile at Mix’s direction.

Trying to keep his sanity intact because that smile surely gave him a mini heart attack, the young vet decided to change the topic, “So her name is Khluen, huh? Like the wave?”

“Yes, that’s right. I’m a surfing instructor at Kata Beach and she likes to go with me all the time so I named her that” The cat’s owner looked around trying to locate where his beloved and pregnant pet was and Mix noticed that he started to look worried.

“She’s here” Mix said in a low tone as he pointed at his lap where the pregnant feline was comfortably sleeping, “She’s very affectionate. Sometimes, when cats are pregnant they want to be left alone but there are also some that wants attention. I guess, she’s the latter” Mix giggled softly as he continued to give the cat smooth and gentle pets on her back.

“She must have been very disappointed in me when I couldn’t tell what’s wrong with her” the surfer sighed, “I’ll make sure to take better care of her from now on, Dr. Wongratch”

Mix was surprised by what he heard but he was able to pull off a grin as he responded with, “You can call me Mix when you think it’s appropriate”

The surfer grinned back saying, “You can also call me Earth when you think it’s appropriate”

Why is he doing this to me? Mix thought as his heart did another somersault and as usual when he tries to ignore what he’s feeling, he changes the subject again, “There’s hot chocolate if you want some. There’s instant coffee too. You know, if you want to get warm”

The surfer headed towards the direction of the kitchen with no second thoughts, “Oh yeah sure! I’ll take whatever you have. Would you want me to bring you one?”

Mix looked over to the cup he prepared beforehand, “Yes, please. The one I made earlier has gone cold” and he observed the surfer’s back as Earth started making a new batch for the two of them.

“I hope you like movies. I was about to watch one before I noticed that you’re outside”

Earth gave him a sideways look while holding two mugs in both hands, “I like films. What’s the title of the movie?” The handsome cat owner inquired as he walked his way to the couch and sat down next to the young vet, offering a cup of hot chocolate with a smile.

Mix gratefully took the cup of the warm beverage and sipped a small amount of liquid before replying cheekily with, “50 first dates”

“Doc, I have a question. Since when did we have a hot and good looking client in our clinic?”

Nammon had to do a double take just to make sure that he wasn’t hallucinating. He felt a finger flick on his forehead and he whimpered in pain, “Doc, what was that for?!”

“I need you to focus on the animal were currently assessing and not on our clients” Mix scolded as he tried to concentrate with what he was doing.

Nammon rolled his eyes as he made a face at the young vet, “Tsk. I bet you want him all to yourself, huh”

“Shut up” Mix growled lowly as he continued with the task. They were examining the last animal that was booked for the day. And Earth decided to drop by at the clinic then. His entrance surely made everyone turn their heads on his arrival.

It’s been a week since their first meeting and Mix was able to give Earth the needed advice and tips on how to care for a pregnant feline during his short stay. Mix made sure that Earth filled out the needed forms so they could keep a file for Khluen. When the typhoon was over and Earth had to go back home, Mix felt instantly sad because it’s been a while since he had company. The way that he had a cat on his lap and a charming man on his side as he watched his favourite movie while sipping a cup of hot chocolate made him realize that he had been alone for the entire duration he was staying in Phuket. And as much as he hated to admit it, he suddenly had this longing for a companion.

“Mix, I have here Khluen’s stool sample like what you asked me to” Earth approached the young vet the moment that the last client walked out of the clinic after Mix gave the client’s pet a treat.

Both Khaotung and Nammon looked surprised and they shared a knowing look.

“Oh, so he calls you Mix, Doc? You’re on nickname basis, eh? You guys must be really close” Nammon teased as he scanned the tall, dark and handsome man in front of them.

Mix was shooting daggers at his technician’s way wanting him to shut his mouth so he won’t feel even more embarrassed. The blush that was creeping out of his cheeks were beginning to show and Mix had to clear his throat to regain his composure.

“Thank you. I’ll let you know when the results are out” Mix took the small vial that had the specimen and handed it to Nammon. This was his attempt of trying to shoo the technician away but Nammon won’t budge.

“Are you a surfer? You look familiar now that I’ve seen you up close!” Nammon excitedly commented as he looked over at Khaotung asking for back up. They need details! Juicy details!

“Uhm, yes. I also give out surfing lessons in Kata Beach. You guys might want to try it” Earth replied, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck.

“Kata Beach?” Khaotung repeated as he stood next to Nammon and with wide eyes he looked over at the young vet and prompted, “Doc! You visit different beaches on your day off, right? If you haven’t been to Kata Beach, you should go there next!”

Nammon snapped a finger, agreeing with the idea, “Oh yeah! I mean, you can go there yourself and give the results of the stool sample when it’s done, right?” Nammon and Khaotung gave each other a playful nudge, trying to keep themselves from tittering.

Mix was speechless. How dare these two staff members of his set him up with a client! A young, hot, tall, dark and handsome surfer at that!

“You’d do that?” Earth questioned, looking all hopeful at Mix, “I’ve been busy lately because a lot of tourists are coming. I was lucky enough to have the time to bring the sample here before the clinic closes. But if you’re occupied and can’t make it, I’ll make time to come here and get the results”

Both Nammon and Khaotung waved their wands in front of them in panic as they tried to come up with an excuse, “No, it’s fine! Doc can do it. He loves the beach! He can hand over the result to you in person!”

“Oh, wow! That means a lot to me” Earth gave out a boyish and shy grin, “Well, I better go now. I just asked a friend to look after Khluen while I’m gone”

“You better get going then” Mix nodded in agreement and bid the handsome surfer goodbye. When Earth was gone, Mix turned around to face his two staff. Nammon was already using Khaotung as his shield.

“What did you guys do?!” Mix yelled as he stomped a foot.

“Doc, you need to get laid! He’s your chance! Why deny the blessing of the heavens when it’s been serve to you on a hot plate?” Nammon snickered as he remained hiding behind Khaotung’s back.

Mix’s nostrils were flaring, “And what made you guys think that I need to get laid?”

Khaotung was the one who responded this time as he tapped his lower lip with his index finger, “Come on, Doc. You’re human. You need to get some. Even the animals you’re treating are having a go at it. Don’t tell me you don’t find him attractive?”

Mix was silent as he tried to avoid both Khaotung and Nammon’s piercing gaze.

“You do find him attractive!” Nammon laughed while clapping his hands and Khaotung added more fuel to the fire as he said, “Look! Doc is getting red like a tomato”. And both the receptionist and technician high fived each other all the while giggling like fan girls at their new discovery.

“BOTH OF YOU! GET OUT!”

Just like what his two foolish staff members had planned and promised Earth, this time, Mix decided to go to Kata Beach on his day off. Wearing a white and blue striped beach shorts paired with a white cotton V neck t-shirt and finishing his look with a pair of sunglasses and comfortable white beach slippers as his footwear, Mix brought with him the result of the stool specimen. He rode his motorbike to his destination that was only 9 kilometres away from the clinic. He arrived at Kata in no time and saw that the heart of the place was swarmed with tourists. At least, now he knows that Earth wasn’t lying. The place was packed and a few buildings and stalls here and there decorated the area.

Now, he understands why he hasn’t been here. He preferred the quiet beaches.

Leaving his motorbike parked on a safe spot, he made his way towards the direction of the shore. He descended a flight of stairs and as he stepped foot in the sand, a sudden thought came to him. He actually doesn’t know how to find Earth, so what should he do?

Well, he will just ask around and try his luck.

It didn’t take long for him to find what he was looking for though because Mix was able to spot a crowd by the beach, and some of them were surfers, loudly cheering for someone. He approached them with care and watched with them the root of the entire commotion. Mix turned his attention towards the sea and lo and behold, the person he came for was there about to ride some waves.

Earth was wearing an all-black wetsuit while mounted on top of a white surfboard. He laid on his stomach as he paddled away from the shore and moved towards the deeper parts of the water. When he had managed to reach the area where he would wait for the wave he’s planning to surf on, Earth positioned himself to face the spectators as he looked back once in a while to check for an incoming wave. The bystanders’ cheer for him grew louder and the adrenaline in his veins started pumping him up. Looking back once more over his shoulder, he detected a ripple of water was forming and soon it’ll turn into a curl. He was hoping that the wave was huge enough for him to surf on and his hunch told him it’s going to be a big one so he prepared himself for what’s about to come.

Recognizing that the surge of water was nearing him, Earth waited for a bit. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes to calm down. And when he felt that the wave was right beneath him propelling him to move forward, Earth felt that he became one with the water. Slowly, he positioned himself to stand up and when he sensed that he’s not going to lose his balance, he expertly stood up on his board like how any ordinary surfer dude would do.

The sudden rush of the wind on his face brought him to reality that he’s now riding and surfing the wave. And like how his body have been accustomed to do its thing, Earth decided to pull off some simple tricks.

He decided to perform a forehand cutback.

He positioned his knees to bend in a way that was very familiar to him when he’s about to do the trick. He then saw that certain section on the wave where he should swerve and propel against so that he could turn around. When his senses told him that it was time to do it, Earth swerved against that point and was brought to the opposite direction to pivot back towards the curl, his left hand leaned downed to touch the water. As the momentum builds up for him when he’s about to approach the white water part of the wave, Earth twisted his shoulders and chest to where he wanted to go next and his surfboard followed his motion as he applied more weight on his toes this time. His bent knees were able to absorb the shock brought by the white water and he bounced back to his original position when he first rode the wave. A huge smile formed on his face as he settled back to the pocket of the wave where it was steep.

This is the part where it would feel safe and assuring for him because he knows that he was able to pull it off.

It took a while for Mix to become aware of the fact that his mouth was wide open the entire time he was watching Earth surf. He felt excited, worried and proud at the same time. Mixed emotions, as they would say. He only managed to snap back to his senses when Earth returned to the shore and people were complimenting him and some were giving him high fives. The surfer instantly detected his presence. And Mix wasn’t sure if he imagined it or not but did Earth’s smile became wider and happier when he noticed that Mix was there?

“Did you see that?” Earth, hair all wet, and his black wetsuit clung to his body like a second layer of skin, asked the young vet excitedly.

Mix was enchanted for a minute but was able to pull himself back together, “I did! You were awesome! I should really consider taking surfing lessons from you” The last part was something Mix blurted out of the blue. He got too carried away.

“Really?” Earth adjusted and tucked his surfboard comfortably under his left arm while arranging his wet hair with his right hand as he gave a mischievous look towards the young vet, “I could give them to you for free”

Mix was both shocked and horrified at the statement, “Are you serious?”

Earth had to stop himself from grinning cheekily, “If my vet bills for Khluen are also free”

And Mix doesn’t know what has gotten into him but he hit Earth’s left shoulder like he was some kind of a lovesick girl, “Not fair!”

The surfer must have liked the attention Mix was giving him as he continued to tease the other, “Kindly define fair, Doc”

The veterinarian rolled his eyes as he had no answer to Earth ridiculing him. And as usual whenever he tries to avoid his feelings, he changes the subject, “I’ve got the results for Khluen’s stool sample. Want to see?”

The tall surfer grinned boyishly sensing that the doctor was trying to steer their conversation to another direction, “Sure! Let’s head to the shop first”

The shop was a small one but it felt really homey and welcoming. Different and various looking type of surfboards were displayed. And Mix noticed that a line of oxygen tanks were also visible just right outside the shop. An array of swimsuits and swimming trunks were there too. And lots of other stuff that one could use when they’re about to go for a swim or to surf. They entered the place and Earth lead him to the back where there was an area where people could lounge and have some snacks. Mix saw the cat house made of rattan placed on a corner and as if on cue, Khluen decided to stick her head out to somewhat inform Mix that she’s right there.

“Oh, hi Khluen!” Mix greeted happily at the feline. And the cat responded to him with a meow as if acknowledging his presence.

“She used to wait for me by the beach. But now that she’s with kittens inside her, she prefers to stay here instead” Earth told Mix as if it wasn’t that obvious enough, “Make yourself comfortable. I’ll just wash off some of this sea water. I feel salty”

Mix nodded his head as he decided to sit on the nearest chair he could find.

Not a minute has passed and some foreign looking guy with thick brows entered the area.

“Can I help you with something? Are you here to take surfing lessons?”

Mix was silent as he shook his head no.

“Diving lessons, then?”

Mix shook his head again to indicate that no, not that too.

“So, what are you here for if not for the lessons?” The person’s thick brows furrowed as he inched closer towards the young doctor, staring at Mix suspiciously.

“He’s here for me”, Earth appeared looking refreshed and with his wet suit half worn. The top was off, baring his upper body that was tanned and toned. Mix had to swallow an invisible lump that was stuck on his throat as his eyes devoured the sight of Earth’s well defined body. And wow! Are those really his abs? Absolutely breath-taking!

A white towel hung over Earth’s shoulders and he had a can of soda in hand. He offered it to Mix with no hesitation.

“Here, have a drink. I bet you’re parched” Mix was about to reach for the can when Earth decided to open it for him first before handing it over.

“O..oh” Mix stammered as he received the beverage, “Thank you” he was taking a sip of the soda when the thick browed guy decided to open his mouth once more, “I bet he’s hungry too he looked so starved when you entered the room”

“Drake!” Earth yelped and upon hearing what the thick browed guy said, Mix fought the urge to let the soda he just drank come out of his nostrils.

The person that Earth called Drake raised both his hands as if claiming he’s done and said nothing wrong, “I’ll step out and buy some local burgers then. Be right back” and dashed out of the shop like he was running for his life.

The surfer shook his head in disbelief as he took a seat on the chair opposite to Mix, “I’m sorry about that. Drake’s the diving instructor I work with, he’s the co-owner of this shop. He’s a good friend of mine”

“I see” Mix wanted to clear the awkwardness that was visibly there as he looked around trying to avoid eye contact, “You have a nice shop, I mean it” the young vet continued to steer clear from looking at the surfer, “Since when have you owned this place?”

Earth thought of it carefully as he intensely gazed at the lad opposite to him, “Since my father handed it to me around 5 years ago?”

Mix instantly felt sad and assumed that Earth’s father have passed away, “Oh, I’m sorry”

“No, don’t be sorry” The surfer was chuckling as he waved a hand in the air. He’s very much amused with this young veterinarian’s character. What a cute fellow! “My father is still alive. He’s travelling with my mother now. They’re enjoying their retirement together”

Mix was appalled. He shouldn’t have jumped into conclusions! Now, he suddenly has the urge to bang his head against the wall. Stupid! Stupid!!!

Knowing that the young vet has been placed in an uncomfortable light, it was Earth who decided to change the topic this time. “By the way, about the results for Khluen’s stool sample?”

The doctor was more than grateful for the different and restful atmosphere as he took out and laid the results of the specimen on the table between them, “As you can see here, the results indicates that there were no signs of parasites whatsoever. So, Khluen’s a perfectly healthy pregnant mommy cat. I’m pretty sure there’d be no complications for her”.

Mix looked over to the direction where Khluen’s rattan cat house was located and the soon to be mother feline was already sleeping soundly.

The surfer suddenly looked serious and stern after he listened to Mix explain the results, “Is something wrong? Is there something on my face?” The young vet tried to pat around his face looking worried.

Earth had to hold his hand to make Mix stop from whatever it was he was doing.

“I feel bad that you have to come all the way here just for that”

The young doctor felt his heart do some weird somersaults again. It was like his heart was the one who went out surfing and riding the waves.

Mix started to feel himself blush like a schoolgirl. Earth was still holding his hand.

“No, it’s fine. You don’t have to apologize” the doctor sloppily tried to break free from Earth’s hold in which the surfer hesitantly complied by letting him go.

“Awwwwwww! I wasn’t informed that your boyfriend is an animal doctor” Drake was leaning against the wall as he watched a sappy love story unfold in front of him.

Earth had no choice but to close his eyes trying to hide the fact that he was petrified by his friend’s sudden return, “Drake!”

“Hey, I got them local burgers I told you about. Shall we eat?” Drake happily approached the what-he-presumed-to-be-a-soon-future-couple as he properly introduced himself to the veterinarian this time around.

🎶 Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new?
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through
Happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Oh, wouldn't it be nice 🎶

“That damn song has been playing non-stop today! Who’s been listening to it, huh?” Champ Nattharat Kornkaew complained as he tried to count and tally his work sheet at the counter. He was in charge and left to manage the shop whenever both Drake and Earth were busy with lessons.

Drake smirked as he pointed behind his shoulder towards their lounging area where their other friend was at and where the music was obviously coming from.

“Ask lover boy over there. I bet, he’s love sick. Call the doctor, that animal doctor real quick!” Drake had a laughing fit as Champ tried to make out what he said.

“You mean that Earth, our buddy, has found himself a potential lover? And it’s an animal doctor?” Champ’s eyes widened at the thought as he realized something, “Is it Khluen’s doctor?”

Drake winked and clucked his tongue indicating that Champ was right, “You betcha! And that doctor is one attractive looking fella!”

“I can hear you both, you know” Earth emerged from the other side of the room looking all serious and grim.

Drake cooed as he made his way towards his friend offering to give him a hug, “Awwww why the glum look, buddy? Don’t you have a date with Dr. Wongratch?”

“Shut up, Drake. Stop getting on my nerves” The surfer tried shimmying out of his friend’s hold looking disgusted and irritated.

The diver could only shook his head disappointedly as he observed how troubled his friend looked and he knew all too well what’s bothering the surfer, “You better come up with some other excuse soon to see Mix because using Khluen as one is really petty of you. She’s got like a month to go before giving birth. Don’t tell me you’ll wait for a month before you get to see him again?”

Champ butted into the conversation looking all surprised and intrigued, “Wow, Earth! How can you use your cat like that?”

The surfer was suddenly defensive as he tried to clarify the situation, “Hey! It’s not like that, okay? It just happened alright”

Drake folded his arms with his thick brows furrowed together, “Look, man! I’m really happy for you. I’ve never seen you this smitten since your last relationship and that was like a long time ago. I think you’ve had enough time practicing celibacy and you need to put an end to it because you’re not some kind of monk, okay?”

That line from the diver had Champ rolling on the floor laughing. Earth looked even more pissed because his friend was actually spitting out facts.

“So you’re telling me that was your first and last date when he went here?” Drake asked, his arms still folded.

Champ exaggeratedly reacted in the background with a gasp, “Oh no! I hope not!”

Earth could only sigh in defeat as he reminisced that moment where Mix personally delivered to him the results of Khluen’s stool sample. After Drake apologized for his unruly behaviour and offered them the burgers he bought, Earth recommended to give Mix a tour of the area. The surfer felt bad that the veterinarian exerted much effort and drove all the way to Kata Beach and knowing that it was his day off, might as well make the most of it, right?

He remembered telling Mix to wait for him, after they were done eating the burgers, as he changed into an all-black ensemble (Earth really likes the colour black if you can’t tell). He wore a pair of black beach shorts, black t-shirt with a round neckline and black slip on slippers to complete his look. He was especially pleased when he saw how Mix ogled at him after because he could clearly identify that familiar look of adoration on the doctor’s eyes. And Earth wasn’t going to deny the fact that he was attracted to the veterinarian too. From the first time they’ve met and from the short amount of time he spent at Mix’s place with Khluen was enough to send his mind reeling. Mix was a magnetic force that he’d gladly reckon with. The animal doctor has been occupying his thoughts ever since that fateful encounter they had on that certain stormy day.

Earth acted as the tour guide for Mix and showed him around. He was able to introduce the doctor to the locals as Earth was very well known in the area. Having won several surfing competitions, you could say that he was their pride. He took Mix to try out the local delicacies and he thoroughly enjoyed watching the play of emotions on the veterinarian’s face as he tried every delicacy they could find. Earth took Mix to a local shop that served the best waffles in Kata and the surfer couldn’t contain his excitement when Mix tried making something out of the food just like what Drew Barrymore did on that movie they watched together. They high spiritedly re-enacted some scenes from the film and Earth was satisfied and at ease seeing that Mix was having a good time.

Of course, they took pictures together. The young vet summoned the courage to initiate the move and even though Mix doesn’t know it but Earth appreciated the gesture very much. It felt like both of them had known each other for a long time and they are totally at ease with one another. Although Mix tends to get awkward when Earth decides to step up his flirting and his teasing but all in all they had an awesome day together. And the surfer made sure to end his tour with a bang. He suggested that they both go on a walk at the beach during sunset and Earth saw how Mix beamed.

“I love sunsets!” The doctor exclaimed happily, “That’s one of the reasons why I like going to the beach because I always deem the sunsets by the beach to be extremely stupendous and special”

Earth couldn’t help but beam along with the young veterinarian. Mix has this enticing aura about him that would make you want to get to know him more. Or does Earth only feel this way towards him?

The surfer bought them cold drinks at one of his favourite stalls before they headed towards the shore.

They both walked in silence at first. Taking in and enjoying the view. The waves kissing the shore, the birds that flew by and the laughter they could hear from a far from little kids who were making sand castles brought a smile to both Earth and Mix’s faces. It was the young vet who decided to open a discussion.

“I’ve always preferred the quiet beaches but I really enjoyed your tour today. Thank you” And Mix had to act like he was taking a sip of the cold drink that Earth bought for him to hide his flushed face.

“You’re always welcome to come here anytime you want. And I’m glad to be of service to you today, Doc” Earth mimicked doing a curtsy which sent Mix to a fit of giggles. God, why does he act like this whenever he’s around Earth? Can’t he be more obvious?

“Okay, Mr. Surfing Instructor, if you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?” Mix decided to confront his feelings and be brave this time. As you can see, he’s not trying to avoid anything and decided to pry. Do or die?

Earth stared at Mix with a perky look on his face liking the idea where this conversation was headed, “How old do you think I am?”

Trying to ignore his heart that was beating fast, the doctor examined Earth’s face intently as he tried to survey and figure out the other’s age, “Uhmmmm 29?”

A boyish chuckle left the tanned surfer’s lips as he reddened from what he just heard, “I’m flattered. You’re almost there, Doc” He took a quick sip of the beverage he had in his hand, “I’m actually turning 32 next year on February. Should I expect a present from you then?"

Mix decided it was time that he should also step up his game and acting all bashful like that one particular dwarf from the seven dwarves will not get him anywhere, “Sure if you promise to give me one on my birthday too” and with a playful wink Mix added, “Mine’s July”

“Are we supposed to keep the dates a secret?” Earth inquired as he noticed that they’ve only told each other the month and excluded the dates.

Mix smiled an all teeth smile as a sudden idea popped into his mind, “Let’s make it a challenge and try to find out the exact dates” he extended a hand towards the surfer, “Deal?”

Earth took the young vet’s hand and shook it, “Deal”. Still not letting go of the other’s hand, it was Earth who threw back the question that Mix asked earlier, “So, how old are you, if you don’t mind me asking, Doc?”

And even though Mix told himself that he’s not supposed to get all self-conscious but he can’t help it. There was something about Earth that suddenly made him want to turn into a puddle of goo, “I’m turning 28 next year”

Earth looked amused hearing the response and gaped at Mix with no reservations, still keeping their hands locked, “Hmmmmm not bad”

Mix gaped back with a tiny smirk pulling at the corner of his lips, “Yeah, not bad”

And they both forgot to appreciate the beautiful setting sun of Phuket which served as their background as they both continued to stare and got lost in each other’s loving gaze.
