How To Steal A Brother And/Or Pretend To Be Evil

Summary:

Reed knows a few things, and he knows them well. They're the rules, and they keep him safe.

One: don't let them find you.
Two: don't let them know what you are.
Three: don't trust anyone.
Four: you're on your own, kid.

This idiot overworld child seems determined to break every single one of them.

(Also, don't. Don't question the name choice. Please.)

Chapter 1: Reed Finds A Child

Chapter Text

Reed has been on his own since his parents could get rid of him, and he's been hiding ever since. He's pretty sure he's ten by now. It's hard to tell when all his time is spent burrowing underground and running from any threats he encounters.

When running doesn't work, Reed fights. His scars are a good reminder of why he practices with his sword.

Being a recluse, he has a bit more time than most. When not hiding, running, fighting, or puzzling out redstone, Reed uses his scrappy, half-broken tech to try and code.

Through some blessing or curse, Reed manages to throw himself into an Overworld server.

The air is both thicker and cleaner, and much harder to breathe. There's a fire off in the distance, not unusual, but it's the only one, and that very much is.

Reed wrangles his device onto his wrist and heads off to the fire. Immediate danger needs to be known about so he can figure out the best way to avoid it, and given what he's heard of the Overworld, it's much safer than Hels.

Though he highly doubts the rumors about beds not trying to eat their inhabitants on occasion.

Okay, so, Reed is regretting a few things. Mainly the child. It's somehow the only sentient survivor of the fire, and has attatched itself to him. Reed cannot get it to leave him alone. He considered hurting it once, but, that... didn't work.

The kid looked up at him with big, weird eyes and gasped at the sword, asked how he got it, and started rambling about how cool he must be to have a real sword.

Reed doesn't know why his heart has decided to exist, but it's causing problems.

At least the little nuisance is good at redstone. And resuscitation, Reed is begrudgingly grateful to find.

Overworld air and Hels creatures don't mix nicely.

He just shoves the kid off of him, coughs up a lung, and goes back to tinkering with his code. Reed wants to go home. Even if Hels is, well, Hels, it's much more familiar than the weird, thick air of the Overworld, and the weird, hyper-intelligent kid that's decided to follow him around.

...okay, maybe the kid isn't that bad. Maybe. He'll wait and see how well it can follow the rules.
