"There is no debt to pay," he insisted in a voice that was as soft as his scent. "You owe me nothing."
A slayer of old is reincarnated. Haunted by memories that he doesn't understand of blood and regret, he vows never to hold a blade and takes up the mantle of a healer instead.

Enjin never found Zanka at the bottom of the well. The boy who crawled out was not reborn, not encouraged, and definitely not a Giver. He goes home, and now knows he is nothing.
He grows into a fine and respectable Nijiku Son, serving under his Sister’s command. When the Giver HQ reports losing a new member to a kidnapping attempt while taking down the largest trash beast seen in 6 years, Zanka follows his sister to discuss retrieving the boy. He thinks it will be a route mission—that is, until he’s enlisted to find the boy. Right alongside the Givers he hates.

By the time the trash storm arrived, the tower had been growing steadily for nine days.
The young artist from Canvas Town who had been possessed by the idea of placing a giant piece of art on the tallest mound of trash in the No Man's Land knew none of this. Nor did they bother to check the forecast to see if there would be a trash storm in the area that day.
Equally oblivious were the small family of travelers braving their way through the wasteland in search of a better life.
