Work Text:
“I’m not telling you a thing,” you mumble, glowering at the floor below you resolutely. So obviously avoiding his gaze. The act of defiance, no matter how small, makes Jacob laugh.
The sound is crudely sweet and makes the base of your spine tighten out of self preservation.
“That’s not why you’re here, deputy, I thought you would’ve figured that out by now.” He steps forward, pulling out the chair across from your own to sit down. It scratches against the cement floor, making a god awful sound that does horrible things to your sensitive ears.
Jacob sighs heavily, leaning back in his chair like he’s trying to get comfortable. He settles his hands on the tabletop, so close to your own that you could very easily move your pinky finger just an inch to the right and you’d brush against his own.
You have to tighten the leash on your inner omega to stop from doing that.
“Honey—“
“Don’t call me that.”
Another sigh. He shakes his head, playing the part of disappointed alpha so well that it’s sickening. “Do you know what it’s like going through a heat alone?”
You perk up at the odd change of subject. Finally raising your head to meet his gaze. Though you can’t hold it and you glance off towards the barred windows of the room he’d thrown you in earlier today. Bare except for the table and chairs you're both occupying.
When the silence stretches for too long and it becomes clear that you won’t answer Jacob continues. “Of course you do, you’re a young pup, but old enough to have a few heats under your belt.”
You bite your lip and will yourself not to blush. It’s difficult though, with the gravel rough tone of his voice and the images he’s conjuring with his words alone. Drawing forth memories you don’t normally think about unless you’re in a heat drunk haze.
“It’s supposed to be even more painful once you’ve met your mate. Your body knows your other half is nearby. So fucking close to making you feel perfect. Except if you reject that…” he laughs again, more breathy and excited this time, “if you don’t do what mates are supposed to do then it hurts even worse than a normal heat spent alone. Sorta like you’re being burnt alive.”
Your eyes blow wide at the omission. You don’t want to believe him, you shouldn’t. This is nothing more than an intimidation tactic to draw you forward into his arms.
“At least that’s what I’m told.” He stands up, flashing a smile your way. “Alphas deal with it so much better than those poor omegas. Like yourself, right deputy?”
He leans forward, palms on the rough oak as he towers over you. Flashing too sharp canines that can only belong to a wolf. “You’re not good at hiding your scent, honey, it’s been getting stronger for days now. I know you’re close to your heat. It won’t be long now before you have to choose.”
“I have chosen!” You snap back. Hands clenched into fists that you’re quick to bury in your lap lest you lose control and punch him. He wouldn’t strike back, he never has, but he can get mighty creative with his punishments.
Jacob hums and pulls away. Giving you one last secretive smile before turning on his heel and leaving you alone once more. It’s quiet and dark, the only form is coming through the window. Provided by moonlight.
It’s the worst kind of taunt and Jacob knows it. You haven’t had a chance to run, to breathe fresh air and stretch your legs in almost a week now. You want to pace, to howl at the four walls and anyone beyond them. If just to make your anger known.
It’s hours later when he comes back, a dinner plate in hand along with a pair of handcuffs he twirls idly in his grasp. “Getting restless?”
“Fuck off.”
Jacob laughs, “I guess I deserve that.” He pauses and gestures towards the table. “Sit. C’mon, I made it myself.”
You sneer, lip curling up. Despite the circumstances you still won’t roll over and give in. That feels too much like a defeat after all you’ve done for the Resistance.
“Make me, Seed.”
He cocks his head to the side. Nose twitching until he scents out the sickly sweet smell of fear coming off you in waves. He puts the food down and tucks the handcuffs in the back pocket of his jeans.
He walks around the table, crouching down on his haunches to get eye level with where you’re pushed into a corner, your legs drawn up to your chest. He reaches forward and smiles when you kick out at him.
“You really want me to do that?” He asks softly, on the edge of threatening.
“You don’t have to do anything. Just leave me alone.”
He shakes his head. “You don’t get it, do you?” At your blank stare he sighs and continues. “You don’t know why you’re here with me?”
“Because I know where the Whitetails are. And you want Eli dead.” The answer seems so obvious you feel silly saying it out loud. But you feel even worse when he laughs. His head dipping down to his chest as he does so.
“Honey, we’re mates—“
“Stop fucking reminding me.”
Jacob shoots out as fast as can be, much faster than any man his size should be able to, and grabs your throat. “It’s rude to interrupt.” His voice is pitched low, so low that at the end it turns into a growl, an actual alpha growl that comes from deep within his chest. “We’re mates,” he says again, pausing to test your reaction.
This time you don’t give him one.
“You’ll come around eventually. So stop fighting this before you hurt yourself. Now get up and eat, omega.” His hand falls away from your throat and he yanks you up by your bicep. Pulling you over to the chair where he finally gives you a shove to sit down.
You eat, after a few tense moments in silence. After your stomach rumbles and his brooding presence becomes way too much.
“Good girl,” he says after you’re done. Pushing your plate to the side to sit on the table top, so close that his knee bumps your own. “Now you’ve got a choice.” He shifts and pulls the handcuffs from his back pocket, giving them a playful shake to draw your eyes to them. “Walk with me to my office, no fight whatsoever, or I’ll put these on you as tight as they can go and I’ll drag you there.”
You certainly know what he’d prefer and so just to spite him you stand up fast, knocking the chair over in your haste. He raises an unimpressed eyebrow and hops down off the table, stepping aside to let you pass.
Once out of the confines of that room you try to memorize each twist and turn. His hand is on your shoulder the entire time, hardly giving you a chance to escape, and he jostles you each time you lag on his directions.
You feel like he’s taking a more confusing route than normal, just to fuck with you. But you’d never accuse him off it. Not now, when you’re at such an obvious disadvantage.
He keeps you in his room where he can keep a close eye on you. He doesn’t say that aloud but he doesn’t have to, it’s obvious right from the start. Just the way he always angles his body so you’re in his line of sight, how there’s an edge of anger when you take too long when walking to the shower in the morning.
He’s possessive. It’s a side of Jacob Seed that most probably don’t see. And for good reason, it’s fucking annoying. A week goes by and you’re ready to slam your head against a wall.
It’s not until you wake up one morning, more lethargic than normal and sweating through your clothes that you realize what’s happened. That your heat finally arrived, early too, just like he hoped it had. And if Jacob wanted to see a thing or two about possession that you were more than ready to show him how it’s done.
It’s petty, flipping the script so suddenly, but you know deep down that Jacob won’t push an antsy omega too much. He values his instincts more than he lets on.
And so you roll out of bed, more than aware that Jacob’s already showered and dressed, probably on his way back now with breakfast. You take that time to gather up a few blankets from the chest at the end of the bed to shove underneath Jacob’s desk. It’s large enough to fit comfortably but not too big, your back is protected and most importantly you feel safe.
You try to tell yourself that it has nothing to do with Jacob’s scent unfurling around you. An inescapable point of contention that you’re sure he’ll bring up eventually. Especially because that’s where he finds you when he gets back, food in tow, under his desk surrounded by blankets and the few personal possessions he let you keep.
If he’s worried that he couldn’t see you at first, he sure doesn’t show it. In fact, he probably can just scent you out as soon as he walks in.
“Hey there, hun.” He circles around the desk, placing the food down to crouch to your level. He’s close. Too damn close, and your inner omega snaps angrily at that revelation. He reaches out, presumably to touch, and you shut that down real fucking quick.
You bite him.
Like a wild animal.
“For fucks—okay, easy girl.” He laughs, wiggling his finger tips with a huff. You hardly left a mark but he plays it off like you actually hurt him. “I get the message—“
“I’m not fucking you, asshole. Get away from my nest.”
“Well,” he drawls, moving to lean on his knees, “you made your nest under my desk. What am I supposed to do?”
“Dunno. You figure it out.”
You nuzzle into the nearest blanket, breathing in its scent and blinking lazily up at him. Waiting for him to move back. It takes a few more seconds of silently glaring at him before he sighs heavily and stands, stretching as he does so.
He places down a tray in front of you, sliding it forward and quickly pulling his hand back. “At least eat something.”
“Yes, alpha.” You try to push some condescending tone into your voice but it doesn’t work in the slightest—if anything it sounds too real. Too much like mated lovers.
Jacob sighs, giving you one last glance before disappearing from view. It’s only once you fall asleep that he even dares going near his desk. Catching up on work as fast as he can before you wake.
And when you do, though how many hours later you can’t be sure, you’re covered by Jacob’s jacket. Smelling distinctly like gunpowder and the metallic tang of blood. You wrangle yourself into it without thought and bury your nose into the collar. Something itches the back of her brain, like a lock sliding into place. Maybe when your heat is over you’ll say this means nothing, no matter how much Jacob will say otherwise. But for now you’ll accept this strange beginning of your heat and just try to enjoy the smell of an unmated alpha.
