A Fox in the 212th

Summary:

His brother commanders like to tell him he doesn't understand because he doesn't fight on the front lines. Fox knows there's some merit to that, because they certainly don't understand being Captain of the Guard. The biggest difference between them, though, is that he can maneuver himself into an attack battalion, even if only for a week.

Notes:

These chapters are fairly short and alternate points of view, but all of them revolve around Fox. Most chapters are meant to be humorous, but some of them turned out more serious.

Chapter 1: Welcome Aboard

Chapter Text

“Do you want a guest cabin, or are you going to sleep in with the junior officers?” Cody asked as he and Fox walked down the corridor. They’d finally managed to lose the last of the other officers.

“Why would I want to sleep with the juniors?” Fox demanded.

“You decided to weasel your way onto my ship for a break from the Guard,” Cody replied dryly. “With the excuse that you wanted to spend time with some of your brothers. Since we both know you won’t be bunking with me, I thought I’d give you the option. How did you manage to arrange this, anyway? And don’t feed me that line again.”

“Told them I need extra training,” Fox said with a shrug. “It’s not like they know any better.”

“Why here?” Cody inquired curiously.

“The 212th is an attack battalion,” Fox reminded him. “If I’m going to get experience in live combat, the best place would be an attack battalion.”

“Why do you even want that experience?” Cody asked, bewildered. “From your stories it can’t be boredom. Coruscant sounds more consistently busy than most battlefields.”

“You guys like to point out how different it is,” Fox answered with a shrug. “I want to see it for myself.”

“So this is all because everyone else is doing it?” Cody’s lips twitched.

“No, it’s so I can prove I’m better than you,” Fox replied with a sharp grin.

“I’m told it’s good to have goals,” Cody mused as he stopped in front of a door. “General Kenobi would suggest I wish you luck.”

“Don’t need it,” Fox assured him smugly. “These my quarters?”

“For your stay,” Cody agreed. He tapped in a code on the keypad before stepping back. “You can set a temporary passcode.”

“You don’t need to know it?” Fox asked as he stepped up.

“As Marshall Commander I have a ship wide override code,” Cody informed him smugly.

Fox snorted and said, “well don’t let me keep you from all your work, Marshall Commander. I’m sure I can get settled in all on my own.”

“If you’re sure,” Cody agreed amiably. “You studied the layout of the Negotiator?”

“I bet I know it better than you do,” Fox retorted.

“I’ll see you in the cafeteria at 1700, then,” Cody replied, unperturbed. He walked to the corner and waited just out of sight.

“Like we haven’t all memorized the layout of any ship we might be stationed on,” Fox muttered. There was a beep and the swish of a door opening, followed by a load groan and a thud. “Oh you have got to be kidding me. I’m going to strangle that little punk.”

Cody allowed himself a small smile as he walked away. Whatever welcome present Ghost company had arranged had been worth the hour of listening to Fox and Buzz argue about the curriculum for new transfers. He made a note to check to see if Boil or Waxer had pictures.
