Katsuki was perfectly happy to leave event planning to other people, even when it involved him. Perhaps especially when it involved him. He was already participating, why should he have to be the one to set it all up too? He’d told Eijirou as much, when they agreed it was about time they got officially married and junk, and Eijirou had just laughed and promised to make sure everything was perfect for him. Katsuki had meant to retort that so long as they both showed up it would be hard to disappoint, but Eijirou had kissed him and by the time he’d remembered what he meant to say the moment was gone. Still, Ei knew how he felt about having to do the planning.

“Why are we bothering to invite anyone?” he asked, kicking his boyfriend in the knee where he sat on the other side of their bed. “The whole tribe’s gonna be there already.”

“Yeah, but I wanna invite my friends from Ironhall.”

“Ironhall?” Katsuki screwed up his face.

“Yeah. You know, the Ryuusakis and Sero and Kaminari?”

Katsuki stared blankly at him until he sighed.

“Hagakure’s friends?” Eijirou prompted.

“Oh, yeah, those two and the extras who were putting you up.” he nodded briefly, then frowned. “Gangly and Dye Job I get, but why the extras?”

“Because they were good to me.” Eijirou smiled, endlessly fond. “I hadn’t yet worked out how to have faith in myself without someone else having faith in me first, I would’ve been as good as dead on my own. They had so little to share, but they took me in anyways.” he looked down at the letter in his hands, more a note than anything else, a list of names for Hagakure to bring the news to. “And... I think it would be good for Kyou.”

Katsuki sighed, scooting over across the bed to lean on his boyfriend’s shoulder. “Your handwriting is atrocious.”

“I know.”

“You really want these folks to come to our wedding?”

“Yeah.” Eijirou nodded, sliding an arm around his waist. “I want Kyou to see that being a shifter doesn’t mean she has to- to settle for what they’ll let her have in the city.”

“I can’t believe anyone ever thought you were terrifying monster.” Katsuki scoffed, pressing a kiss to Eijirou’s jaw. “You’re a big ol’ softy.”

“You love me, though.” he teased, and Katsuki kissed him again, properly this time.

“Yeah, I do.” he breathed when they parted, and Eijirou gave him that sunshine smile which made all his insides melt, even now.

“You don’t have anyone at all you want to invite, though?” Eijirou asked, cuddling up against Katsuki’s side. “Nobody from your hometown?”

Katsuki groaned, hanging his head against Eijirou’s shoulder. “Fuck, why did you remind me.”

Eijirou made a questioning noise, and Katsuki grumbled into his bicep for a moment before straightening up. “My parents.” he huffed, crossing his arms. “If I don’t invite them, my mom will find out, and she will track us down to berate me for not inviting them.”

“Better than mine.” Eijirou laughed. “She used to say she’d disown me if she wasn’t invited.”

“So we’ll invite her too.” Katsuki shrugged, leaning back into his boyfriend’s side. “You’re from Beargrove, right? That’s on the way to Embervault, more or less. We can stop by on the way to invite my parents, show those bastards who ran you out how big a mistake they made.” he grinned, and Eijirou chuckled, setting the note aside to wrap both his arms around Katsuki’s waist.

“What if I don’t want to let them see how handsome my future husband is?” he teased, and Katsuki’s heart felt too damn big for his chest. Fuck, how had it taken him so long to realize he loved this idiot?

“What, wanna keep me all to yourself?” he slid his arms around Eijirou’s waist, leaning in until their noses touched, until Eijirou’s eyes were all he could see, red as fire and blood, red as the rubies Katsuki had given to their smiths to fit in a band that would wrap around Eijirou’s remaining horn.

“Mmm, dragons are famously protective of their treasure.” Eijirou purred, his lips just barely brushing Katsuki’s, voice low enough it resonated in his bones. “Love you ♡”

Katsuki kissed him.

“So, how were you planning on getting to our hometowns?” Eijirou asked him as Hagakure set off with the note in hand, a list of names and rough directions to the house where he’d stayed while in the city. Katsuki gave his boyfriend an unamused look.

“You’re a dragon. We’ll fly.”

“Obviously.”

“Well they’re farther than the city, aren’t they?” he asked rhetorically, stepping closer when Eijirou slung an arm around the small of his back. “If we leave a tenday to fly down, then ride back up, we should get back about the same time as Hagakure.”

“You’ve really thought this through.”

“Obviously.” Katsuki smirked, but it fell flat when Eijirou looked away. “If you want to stay and keep planning, I can always make one of the birdbrains fly me down.” he offered, and Eijirou shook his head.

“It’s not that.” he released Katsuki to cross one arm over his stomach, the other rubbing at his chest. “It’s just... the last time I saw my mom, I’d just turned into a dragon.”

“I mean, I haven’t seen my mom in over a decade either.” Katsuki shrugged.

“No, that’s not-” Eijirou sighed, wrapping both arms around his middle. “She told me to never come back.”

Flames flickered around Katsuki’s fingertips, and not for the first time he wished he had Eijirou’s ability to properly growl. “Eijirou, we don’t have to invite her, but I am going to give that woman a piece of my damn mind.”

“Katsuki, no.” Eijirou said quickly, reaching out to catch him by the elbows. “She was scared, I couldn’t turn back- I didn’t know it was possible to turn back, and dragons-”

“Ei.” Katsuki twisted his arms to grab his future husband by the elbows, locking eyes with him. “If she has anything approaching a good reason, I want to hear it from her, not you. She hurt you, and you know how I feel about people who hurt you.”

“Yes, which is what I’m worried about.” Eijirou pouted.

“Look, if I promise not to hurt her, will that make you happy?” he asked. Eijirou nodded.

“She’s my mom, Katsuki.”

“And if she’s any good, she’ll be mine too soon enough.” Katsuki grinned up at his future husband, resting his head on Eijirou’s chest when he was pulled in for a hug. “Are you sure you want to meet my mom? She yells even more than you and Loudmouth.”

“Pretty sure.” Eijirou nodded. “Like you just said, she’ll be my mom too, soon enough.”

“I’ll kick her ass if she’s mean to you, promise.” Katsuki grinned, and counted it as a success when Eijirou laughed.

“Babe, no.”

“Anyone’s mean to you, I’ll kick their ass.” he promised, smiling wider. “I’ll kick your horse’s ass, I’ll kick my mom’s ass, I’ll kick my own ass-”

Eijirou tried to hide his laughter in Katsuki’s hair, but it didn’t exactly work. Katsuki pulled out of his arms, and took Eijirou’s hand. “For real though. I’ll protect you when you can’t protect yourself. We’re partners, we look out for each other.”

“You’ve always done that for me.”

“And I always will.”
