When he was a child, Bilbo was told of soulmates. They were a legend, really, so rare they only happened in the shire every few hundred years- but his parents had sworn up and down that they were meant for one another, cut from the same cloth or different sides of the same coin.
Bilbo had believed, and wished himself- that one day he might find his other half.
And then his father died, and his mother turned into a shell of herself, alive but really quite half-dead.
She’d died a few years later of natural causes, yet far too young.
Bilbo wonders if there’s such things as soulmates in Dwarven culture.
Or: hobbits soulmates will die if their other half does. Bilbo finds out the hard way.

Thorin, try as he might, cannot come up with an excuse. He stands, without shirt, in the forge, carefully crafting a blue bead. Durin blue, to be exact.
And Dwalin stares, unimpressed, as Thorin clenches his jaw, and struggles to come up with a reason as to why he’s crafting a courting bead.
“For the Hobbit?”
Thorin sighs through his nose.
“Indeed.”
“When will you give it to him?”
“I… do not know if he will return my affections.”
Dwalin serves him another deeply unimpressed look.
“Soon. You should give it to him soon, my King.” The last bit is said with a sternness that only Dwalin would ever speak to him with. Thorin watches as he leaves, and then glances back down at the bead.
Soon. Definitely.

Thorin, as the crown prince and oldest of his siblings, takes the responsibility as a chance to prove himself to his family and people, but things get complicated when he meets a strange “hobbit” who makes him question all that he’s been taught. The question is, will he be taking the head of this dragon before the dragon takes his heart?
