Wilbur felt close to hysterical.

He wanted to laugh, but his throat closed up - all that escaped his mouth were hackled coughs.

The lie felt heavy on his tongue but it was still easier than admitting what he already knew, what George knew as well. That there were gentle feelings blossoming in his chest that didn’t belong in a place like this.
