Work Text:

"Foolish." Eret giggles. "Hey. Hey Foolish."

Foolish lets out a half-exasperated sigh. "Hey Eret."

Eret is clinging to Foolish's arm, stumbling with every step. She's drunk, hell, she's wasted. He'd lost track of how many drinks she'd had throughout the night as she weaved in and out of the crowd, talking and chattering and letting the controlled glow of her eyes wash the guests in their gentle light.

Their glow is spilling everywhere now. Eret stops walking, looks up at Foolish, and smiles wide enough to fell the stars. "Hi Foolish."

Foolish can do nothing but smile in response. "You are drunk."

"Mhm. So're you."

"Yeah. Yeah." Foolish tucks his arm around Eret's side, and she changes her grip to one on the back of his suit jacket. "You're way more drunk than me, though."

"And?"

"Just an observation."

Eret giggles. With a gentle nudge, Foolish gets both of them moving again.

They're staying at a hotel just a little ways down the path, but at this rate, Eret might not get there. Almost all her weight is leaned against him, and she's absolutely only still upright because of him.

"Foolish."

"Mmm?"

There's a scary lucidity in Eret's words. "I'm going to forget this."

"Well, I mean, yeah." Foolish laughs a little. "You're absolutely blackout drunk right now. If you remember even half of that party I'll be surprised!" He's not quite seeing straight himself. "You're really gonna need to lay off a bit next time. I know, I know you like to have fun, but you can't do this every time!"

"That's not what I meant." Her grip on him is tight. "I'm going to forget you, Foolish."

"What? No way." A deep discomfort settles into his stomach. "C'mon man, don't say things like that."

"I'm going to." Eret's words are a slurred whisper. Her knees buckle and Foolish catches her immediately, sweeping her up into his arms. He almost stumbles, but luckily he's honed his balance over thousands of years. Even with a fair bit of alcohol in him, he can still carry Eret easy as ever.

"We're almost back."

"Foolish." Her hands ball into his shirt. "Foolish."

He can't respond. All his words are stuck in his throat.

It's only a couple more minutes of walking to the hotel.

The pressure-plated doors swing open, and Foolish nods at the receptionist. "Good evening! Or, well, morning I guess."

"Is he alright?" They give Eret a glance of concern.

"Yeah, he's fine, just drank a little too much. You know how it is." Foolish gives one of his classic smiles, and it seems to placate them. "Bedtime for the both of us!"

They smile in response.

Eret squirms. "Foolish."

"Shh, friend, almost there." Foolish ascends the half-dizzying spiral stairs and takes long strides down the hallway. He stops in front of the door of their room. "Gonna have to set you down now, alright?"

Eret hums, and when Foolish sets her down, she stays upright. Foolish digs through his pockets and pulls out the keycard, pressing it into the door and stepping through as soon as it swings open. She follows behind him, eyes half-lidded.

"Worked yourself down from that?" Foolish turns towards her.

Evidently not, judging by the way Eret stumbles forward and grabs Foolish's face. "Foolish." Most people wouldn't be able to look her in the eyes, but it's easy for him to meet her stare.

"Eret."

"Someday, I am going to disappear." That terrifying lucidity is back. Foolish doesn't like it one bit. "I'm not gonna see you for a while. And when we meet again, I won't remember you."

"Eret, you're scaring me."

"I'm not lying."

"You're drunk." Foolish takes her hands. "You're really, really drunk, Eret. Let's get you out of that dress and into bed."

She blinks at him, but when he guides her into pajamas and into bed, she doesn't protest, doesn't speak.

Foolish holds her as she cries herself to sleep.
