Work Text:
Early in the morning was Osamu’s favorite time of day. Specifically on the days he and Rin shared off, like today. He woke up at around seven that morning, the light from the blinds creeping through and lighting up the otherwise dim room. Osamu had a habit of curling up and sleeping with his head underneath his pillow, so he was saved from the light, but Rin, who had been sprawled with his head facing the window was pulled out of his sleep. He groaned and smacked Osamu’s shoulder lightly.
“Turn that off.”
Still with his head under the pillow, Osamu responded, “Turn what off?”
“The light,” Rin whined.
Using the muffled sound to his advantage, he grumbled a bit, but still got up to fix the blinds once Rin started poking him with his toes, which were, as always, cold. Looking at the time on his phone, he sighed at the early hour on his day off, but resigned himself to staying awake and went to wash up and begin breakfast. Since it was early, he could actually take his time with the meal and make something good.
“Hmm...traditional? But ‘m kind of craving somethin’ sweet,” he thought aloud to himself.
From the bedroom, Rin shushed him loudly, even though the door was closed and there were two rooms separating them. Shaking his head fondly, Osamu rolled up his sleeves and pulled out a bowl from the cabinet. He’d wing it and see what he came up with.
Almost an hour later, Osamu was steadily wrapping up breakfast when he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist and he could see messy bedhead from the corner of his eye. Still, he kept working, letting the warmth from Rin’s sweatshirt seep through his back.
“Smells good,” Rin mumbled into his neck.
“Mm. Should be done in a few, I think. Coffee or tea?”
Instead of answering, his boyfriend went straight to the coffee maker, a move that didn’t surprise him in the slightest. Rin was not much of a talker in the morning, and especially not before he drank coffee. Shrugging, Osamu put his tea to steep and started laying out breakfast on the table; tamagoyaki, rice, some salmon, pancakes, and some fresh fruit.
Coffee in hand, Rin sat down and eyed the spread in front of him. “Are we having guests or something?”
Laughing, Osamu took his place next to him. “No, but I had all that time this mornin’. And I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat more,” he added sheepishly. “You complaining?”
“Not at all,” he said as he reached for a strawberry. “These are good.”
They were both pretty slow at being social after waking up, and despite having been up for about an hour, Osamu was still feeling groggy. He didn’t usually wake up until after breakfast was done and he had drank at least three cups of tea. Since it was a day off, he wasn’t using his laptop to do any sort of work, and the only technology at the table was Rin’s phone, where they both huddled over to laugh at twitter posts and see any news.
Like that, breakfast passed in its usual uneventful fashion.
For lunch, they actually left the house around two in the afternoon. Rin had suggested they head out since the day was so nice. Osamu agreed and started packing lunchboxes for the two of them using the rice they didn’t eat earlier that morning and quickly chopping some vegetables to make a stir fry with leftover chicken from the day before.
“Is this a date? Are we going on a date?” Osamu asked as he slipped on his shoes.
“If you want to call it a date, sure, ‘Samu,” Rin shook his head fondly and tossed a black hoodie to the dark haired man.
“How romantic of ya.” Osamu caught it and noticed the white and yellow streaks on the arms; the hoodie Rin was slipping into was a gift from Aran that had little dancing foxes along the waist. He wasn’t sure if his boyfriend had switched their sweatshirts on purpose, but he wasn’t going to complain.
Once outside, they decided to grab some iced teas from a nearby cafe to battle the heat and settled down at one of the picnic tables in the park. There was just enough shade to keep the sun out of their eyes and the air around them cool, but Rin still kept a pair of sunglasses on as he sipped his iced tea, long legs stretched out. Across from him, Osamu’s ankles were crossed and his shins leaned on Rin’s.
“Can ya make it more obvious yer a celebrity?” Osamu laughed.
“Shh, Osamu, this is my disguise. Also it’s hot out. And I can’t see with the sun being so loud,” Rin said. He pushed around some of the rice in his box and picked up a piece of chicken with his chopsticks.
Already expecting what was coming next, Osamu leaned forward, and sure enough, Rin’s chopsticks were heading straight towards his mouth. He accepted the chicken with a hum and leaned back again, shoveling some rice in to supplement the meat.
“What’s there to see anyways?”
“Nature, I don’t know. I guess you’re kind of cute, too,” he shrugged.
Osamu rolled his eyes and pointedly ignored the way his face grew warm. “Ya think yer real smooth, don’t ya?” He pointed his chopsticks at Rin. “Well, ‘m not falling for it.”
A smug grin appeared on Rin’s face, brightening up his features in a way Osamu was so familiar with it hurt. He knew that underneath the sunglasses, those green eyes had a gleam in them that only showed up when Rin was genuinely in a good mood. So Osamu was either about to get teased or his boyfriend was going to say something so cheesy they would have no choice but to laugh at it.
“But you already did,” he said. “In fact, I remember you quite literally falling-”
“Alright!” Flustered, Osamu cut him off. “Enough of that from ya. Let’s finish eating and get outta here.”
Smiling much more softly, Rin held his hands up in surrender, continuing to chip away at his lunch and occasionally offering some of his food to Osamu. Although he didn’t say it out loud, Osamu knew he was thinking of high school when they finally got their shit together at the end of the summer before their third year.
They had been hanging out at Gin’s place, sprawled in various positions in his living room and savoring the cool of the air conditioner. Gin had gotten up to find some ice pops in the freezer and dragged Atsumu from laying on his back on the floor to help him bring some more snacks. While they waited, Rin had taken to crumpling bits of paper and throwing it at Osamu’s head from where he sat on one of the dining chairs facing backwards. Osamu had been half asleep from the heat so it hadn’t bugged him too much, but after one of the balls landed too close to his nose he sat up in irritation and swatted the air above him.
“Stop, ‘m tryna sleep here,” he grunted.
“And miss out on snack time? I’m surprised,” Rin retorted.
“Snacks ain’t here now, are they? You can just wake me up.” He said as he shifted around to get some more cool air, having lost it once he sat up.
Rin raised an eyebrow, leaning forward in his chair in interest. “Oh really. Why would I do that?”
“Mm, because you like me too much to let me suffer,” he mumbled distractedly, still trying to cool down.
After a few minutes, Rin coughed and broke the silence Osamu hadn’t even realized fell on them. He must have said something weird.
“Even if I did like you, who says I don’t want to see you suffer? I need some entertainment in this heat.”
“Do ya like me?” Osamu blurted out.
“W-well. Do you like me ?”
Neither of them spoke. They stared at each other stupidly until Atsumu came in and shoved Osamu off the couch, sending him to the ground at Rin’s feet. Instead of getting angry immediately at his brother, he looked up and grinned.
“Yeah, actually. Go out with me?”
Rin had kicked his shoulder and huffed out a yes.
Back in the present, Osamu didn’t bother hiding the dopey grin on his face as they packed up their belongings and began walking home.
“Could you look less dumb? It’s embarrassing me,” Rin said, but reached down for Osamu’s hand anyways.
“Nope! Ya gotta deal with it,” he smiled back as he intertwined their fingers.
Their evening found them cuddled together on the couch, Rin laying on his side with his head in Osamu’s lap as a baking show played on the television. The empty takeout containers from dinner were on the coffee table waiting to be cleared away. Rin had insisted they get takeout since it was Osamu’s day off and he had already been in the kitchen twice that day, and wasn’t “in the mood to pretend like I’m a chef, ‘Samu, let’s just order some sushi and fried rice and call it a night, okay?”
One of the contestants was currently having a breakdown over her cake falling apart.
“What is she yelling over?” Rin asked without looking away from his phone.
“Her boat is crumblin’,” Osamu replied as one of the railings fell to the floor in a mess of cake crumbs and gray fondant.
“So she’s gonna lose? I know you’ve seen this episode before.”
Osamu tugged on Rin’s hair, earning him a pinch to the thigh. “It’s entertaining,” he mumbled. “But nah, she comes through. Didn’t win but ‘m pretty sure she passed the challenge. Judges flamed her for her mistakes, though.”
Rin shifted to his back and stared up. “Why is her boat crumbling?”
“She took the cake out the oven and barely waited five minutes before she started frosting! ‘M sure the time crunch is a pain in the ass an’ all, but if ya ever made a cake ya know to let the damn cake cool first,” Osamu ranted. He had seen this episode tons of times, but it never failed to irritate him. Sure, he wasn’t a baker as his specialty, but he knew how to make a cake! And careless mistakes in the kitchen always ticked him off.
From his lap, laughter brought his attention away from his thoughts and he looked down to see Rin’s nose scrunched up. Cute.
“You’re cute when you get upset about cooking shows.”
“Hey,” he huffed. “I was gonna call ya cute.”
His nose scrunched again. “I didn’t do anything?”
“Yer still cute? Lemme compliment ya.”
On screen, the judges were telling the girls how reckless she can be in the kitchen, but they were happy to see her come out the competition strong and move on to the next round. Osamu rolled his eyes, but even he couldn’t deny that her boat came out really good for a cake sculpture made in an hour and half. As the episode ended, he lifted Rin’s head and stood up, using the remote to turn it off.
“Well, cutie, I know yer still off, but I gotta open up the shop early tomorrow so ‘m gonna head to bed? Comin’?”
“That was gross, don’t call me cutie again,” Rin said as he led the way to the bathroom to do his nightly routine. “Osamu,” he called.
Osamu sighed. He really didn’t feel like rubbing a bunch of serums on his face. He just wanted to flop down in bed and not move. Rin, sensing his pout, reached his arm out of the bathroom and pulled the dark haired man in, ignoring his whines.
“It’ll be quick, promise. Just use the foam soap and the mist this time. Oh, and the nightly serum.”
Obediently, Osamu started washing his face. He knew Rin would do it himself if he didn’t, and while he normally had no problem letting his boyfriend roam his hands on his face, he also knew Rin would go all out and give him a full treatment if he let that happen.
“Ya ever considered bein’ a dermatologist?”
“Oh, yes, let me quit my dream job as a professional volleyball player to analyze peoples’ skin,” Rin said drily.
“Ya seem happy to analyze my skin,” Osamu muttered.
“Being pretty isn’t enough Osamu. I won’t let my boyfriend walk around with bad skin when you could just do a little routine every night and keep it healthy.”
“My skin is perfectly healthy, ya just like making me suffer,” he retorted as he started rubbing in the serum.
Rin only hummed and headed to the bedroom, which was his way of saying that Osamu was right and what about it? Rin liked seeing him suffer, and Osamu didn’t mind suffering if it kept him happy.
As he settled into bed, he set his alarm for six in the morning and was grateful that he decided to head to bed before eleven, even if it was only just so. Next to him, Rin rolled over so they were facing each other, like they did each night they slept in the same bed. Even if they didn’t always wake up in the same position, or at the same time, Osamu thought it was comforting to have the last thing he saw each day be the person he loved the most.
Already, he felt sleep pushing his eyelids closed, but he still reached for Rin’s fingers to play around with them.
“Night, Rin. Love ya.”
Rin leaned forward and grabbed his cheek to kiss him softly, holding his lips, umoving, to Osamu’s until they ran out of air. They pulled apart, only slightly, and Osamu touched their foreheads together.
“Love you too, Osamu. Goodnight.”
It was a good day.
