Maybe I'm Dreaming

Summary:

The faded glow allows Reggie to see how pink Alex’s cheeks are; how swollen and glossy his lips are getting from kissing and the hungry look in his eyes that made Reggie think this was going to lead to something more.

But the moonlight reveals more than just hard blushes and longing stares, and his stomach twists at the sight of a bruise.

Notes:

it's really just kissing and implied bad parenting

Work Text:

Reggie had always left his bedroom window unlocked. It started in middle school when Luke would argue with his parents more often and needed some place beside the studio to run away for comfort and continued well into high school. Eventually after Alex came out to his parents he would join in sneaking into Reggie’s room for a place to stay during the night that wasn’t an empty garage turned band studio.

It developed into a habit to leave the window ajar so whoever could slip in whenever, and had become so common that Reggie barely woke when he felt someone slide into the bed next to him. Groggily saying for them to lock the door so his dad wouldn’t see and falling right back to sleep next to one of his friends.

There had been times where it was the other way around, Reggie would climb into Luke or Alex’s bedroom when his parents fighting got to be too much and he’d sleep on the floor instead of joining them on the bed. Mostly because he felt bad to wake them up to move over and when it came to sleeping next to Alex, Reggie wouldn’t get much rest with how distractingly pretty he found the drummer to be. Even now that they’ve fooled around together a few times it still amazed Reggie that he could reach out to Alex and get pulled closer instead of being brushed off.

So it only stands to reason that Reggie wasn’t totally surprised when only an hour after he went to bed he could hear his window slide open and someone stumbled into his room with little grace.

Humph, Luke remember to lock the door,” Reggie tiredly mumbled into his pillow without looking up. Most nights it had been the singer who was trying to get away from another night gone sour between his parents over something like his grades or the band.

“It’s not Luke,” Alex’s voice sounds from across the room, more raspy than usual, and he can hear the faint noise of the window being locked closed. Reggie’s heart skips a beat. Alex had been sending more nights over and it filled Reggie with a mix of feelings. On the one hand, he liked Alex’s company and really enjoyed what they did alone together. But if Alex was slipping into his room in the dead of night it meant something back home wasn’t going smoothly.

It didn’t help that Reggie recognized the strong smell of beer and vodka coming from Alex who wasn’t much of a drinker, but it seemed tonight had been an exception.

Reggie sat up on his bed, eyes squinting into the darkness and catching the faint silhouette of Alex at the edge of his bed and beginning to crawl onto him, even in the dim room Reggie can see a slanted grin on Alex’s face.

The bed creaks under the added weight and by the time Reggie blinks enough to adjust his sight to the darkness Alex is already inches away from his face, cheeks a flushed pink from the liquor. Being so close Reggie can definitely confirm that the smell was coming from Alex.

“Hey there Reginald,” Alex giggled while he hovered over Reggie on the bed.

"Hey yourself, Alexander.” Reggie teased back in a meek breathy laugh, enjoying the sudden closeness.

He’d be lying if he said he didn’t have dreams that started out like this. Alex sneaking into his room and coming to him for more than needing to hide away from a shitty home, but instead wanting to fool around and maybe go further than anything else they’ve done. It seemed it was going to be a dream come true with the way Alex is staring him down with a strong sense of fervor behind his gaze, eyes glossed over in a drunken fog. Alex kept glancing down at Reggie’s lips, biting onto his own and it told Reggie all he needed to know.

“I’m going to kiss you,” Alex said close enough that they shared a single breath before he fulfilled his own orders.

Lips crashing together in a messy rhythm that catches Reggie off guard for a few moments before realizing that he should be kissing back, eyes fluttering closed as he leaned into the bittersweet feeling of Alex pressed against him. The weight on top of him is comforting and Reggie feels a sense of warmth all over his body. There’s an overwhelming excitement in the way Alex is hastily kissing him, biting Reggie’s bottom lip and tasting the strong flavor of liquor.

In the darkness of the bedroom the only thing that can be heard is the sound of soft panting and wet lips reconnecting between breaths, and Reggie takes in the odd mix of cherry coke and vodka that make the kiss taste bittersweet.

Alex’s lips part to deepen the kiss and Reggie sticks his tongue into the opening, and despite hating liquor Reggie still enjoyed the flavor of Alex’s mouth.

Eventually Alex breaks the kiss to move down from Reggie’s chin to his neck, working on a particularly sensitive spot of skin that makes Reggie curl his fingers into the bedsheets to stop from moaning too loudly. When Alex notices the act of restraint he grins against exposed skin and puts a cold hand underneath Reggie’s shirt, knowing it’ll insight a small gasp of surprise from the bassist.

“Hey Reg,” Alex whispered huskily into Reggie’s ear and sent a chill down his spine. “I want to hear you. Don’t hold back.”

“You’re drunk,” Reggie said between stifled laughs as Alex continued pressing feverish kisses onto Reggie’s exposed neck and jawline that it started to tickle.

Alex smiles against Reggie’s skin. “I only had one drink. I’m okay, promise. I don’t want to be drunk for something I want to remember.”

Reggie lets himself believe that, convincing himself the smell of liquor isn’t as strong as it seems and instead continues to enjoy this as much as Alex clearly is. He grins, biting his bottom lip and arching his back in pleasure as Alex scraps his teeth behind Reggie’s earlobe. He sucks in a breath when the drummer starts to nibble on the sensitive spots that Alex knew drove him a little crazy. Somewhere between his neck and shoulder. It excites Reggie when Alex begins to use his teeth and tongue to gently tease Reggie enough that he’d bite back another moan.

“Take your shirt off,” Alex ordered, lips quickly pressed together in a hasty kiss and the assertive attitude was one Reggie was greatly enjoying.

Reggie does as he is told and quickly pulls his sleep shirt over his head and tossed to the floor. Alex's smile is lopsided and hands wander over Reggie’s exposed chest the moment the shirt hits the ground, feeling around for the usual spots that he enjoyed ghosting lingering touches on. Knowing the right places that trickled Reggie and the bassist can’t conceal a giggle when Alex’s fingers grace over his sides.

Moonlight begins to pour into the bedroom. The dim light creates a halo behind Alex, messy bangs falling over his eyes and Alex looks so lovely that Reggie almost can’t believe it, a breath getting caught in his throat from awe.

The faded glow allows Reggie to see how pink Alex’s cheeks are; how swollen and glossy his lips are getting from kissing and the hungry look in his eyes that made Reggie think this was going to lead to something more.

But the moonlight reveals more than just hard blushes and longing stares, Reggie can catch the discoloration on Alex’s cheek. A darkening purple that still appears underneath the flushed skin. He reaches out to the bruised spot and Alex catches his wrist before he’s able to touch there.

“I’m okay.” Alex says before Reggie can get the question out. “I left before things got bad. I’m okay.”

“Lex,” Reggie pushes past Alex’s grip and cups his cheek softly. Thumb gently gracing over the bruised skin. “You shouldn’t- We can’t just because- Alex, he hit you, maybe we shouldn’t do this right now.”

“Please, Reg,” Alex begs, voice shaking slightly, breaking off as he tries to keep it from cracking. The words getting caught in his throat. “I- I don’t want to think about it. I just want to think about you. I want to make you feel good, please.”

Alex presses their lips together in a chaste kiss and Reggie knows the feeling; understands getting yelled at over something pointless and wanting to distract from it. Reggie had done it before. Fooled around with Alex not wanting to actually talk about his feelings, it happened the first time they kissed and a few times after. Usually it takes his mind off things but Reggie doesn’t want the only reason they hook up to be to spite their parents though, but knows he doesn’t want to deny either of them this moment either. He wants more than being friends that sometimes mess around though.

Alex is staring at him with pleading eyes. “I’m okay.” Alex repeats again and it doesn’t do anything to reassure either of them.

“Lex, you’ve been drinking.” Reggie states, voice coming out a little too quick and doesn’t sound like himself. Reggie hated liquor. Couldn’t stand drinking, it made him nervous, but Alex had always been so gentle with him that he wasn’t worried about Alex accidentally hurting him. Still he wanted to make sure that Alex knew he had every chance to suddenly change his mind.

Alex snorts a laugh and it’s so cute it’s almost painful but the air remains thick with tension.

“I’m pretty sure the drink I made was more soda than liquor. I got nervous and chugged a shit ton of water anyways.” Alex bites his bottom lip and looks away, cheeks darkening more in growing embarrassment and it’s hard to see the look in his eyes through shaggy bangs. “Besides, I just wanted to see if it’d give me a confidence boost. I guess it worked.”

“Maybe, but I don’t want you to regret this,” Reggie says meekly, wide eyes staring up at Alex whose eyes are still glossed over in a fog of desire and vodka. His hands find themselves running over Alex’s clothed chest and the drummer holds onto one and brings Reggie’s hand to his lips, pressing kisses to the warm skin.

“I won’t,” he said between kisses. “Not when it’s you.”

It feels like a block of ice drops in the pit of his stomach and Reggie looks like a deer in the headlights as he watches Alex move from pressing soft kisses to his hand to taking off his shirt and the action sends an energetic shot through his veins. Reggie can’t stop himself from placing a hand on either side of Alex’s hips.

“Okay,” Reggie swallowed thickly. “We could- We can keep going. I- I want to keep going if you do.”

“Good,” Alex leaned into another chaste kiss and grinned sheepishly. “Glad to hear it.”

“Yeah, you really want this.” Reggie said, despite feeling similar. Alex was still clearly tipsy and Reggie didn’t want him to regret anything in the morning. There's a difference from messy make outs and doing something like that.

“I want to.” Alex said with so much sincerity that it almost scared Reggie. “I want you. Is that… Is that okay?” Alex asked, voice full of fervor with the same hungry eyes that made Reggie want to crash their lips together again right there and then. Instead he swallows thickly and nods his head, staring up in aroused admiration.

“God, you’re really fucking hot.” Reggie breathed out a laugh, putting a hand behind Alex’s neck and pulling him down to bring their lips together, able to feel Alex’s mouth curl into a smile against the messy kiss.

Alex’s hands wander to the elastic of Reggie’s sweatpants, holding onto his waist to keep him in place and rolling his hips against the front of Reggie’s pants. The action sends a jolt through Reggie’s entire body and he instinctively bucked his hips upwards wanting to recreate the friction. Reggie bites his bottom lip hard enough that he’s sure it’ll start to bleed and blunt fingernails dig into soft skin, leaving crescent marks as Reggie desperately wants Alex to press close to him again. It’s driving him a little crazy to have the fabric between them and Alex is teasing Reggie with slow grinds against his hips.

“Lex,” he whines between soft groans trying to pull them closer and holding onto Alex’s waist. “Come on, don’t be a tease.”

The drummer moves to kiss Reggie’s jawline down to his neck and works towards his chest with feverish kisses that make Reggie’s back arch up in joy, warm breath on cold skin making him shiver.

“I could be way worse if I wanted to edge you on,” he grinned. “Got protection?” Alex asked as he pressed his lips on Reggie’s lower stomach and paws at his inner thighs with strong hands.

“Y- Yeah.” Reggie’s arm moves towards the nightstand next to his bed, mind fogging up in fervor that clouds his thinking and his movements come out jerky and uneven from the overwhelming feeling of Alex’s mouth on his skin.

Before he’s able to open the drawer and take what he was looking for Reggie knocks over his lamp that crashes onto the ground, breaking on impact. It startles them both for a belief moment, but Alex doesn’t seem to be bothered by it.

“Damnit.” Reggie mutters but it’s hard to worry about it when there’s one hand gripping his thigh and moist lips against sensitive skin.

Alex maneuvers to kiss Reggie’s mouth. “We’ll clean it later. Focus on me, ‘kay?”

Reggie nods his head, chasing Alex’s lips when he pulls away and melts into every lingering touch and softens into the sensations. Despite enjoying this greatly, Reggie should’ve known that the crashing sound would be loud enough to be heard outside his room. His dad hadn’t been home for the night but his mom, a frail woman that always seemed to be looking over her shoulder, most definitely had caught the noise echo through their small home.

It’s hard to consider that she would make her way towards them when Alex is picking up the heat of embrace and Reggie runs his fingers through Alex’s hair, enjoying the way he leaned into the touch.

Alex briefly moves back to sitting on Reggie’s hips, clumsily searching for the protection that Reggie failed to grab before knocking over the lamp, and Reggie’s head is spinning with pleasure. Alex is planting a series of kisses that turn into love bites on Reggie’s neck while absentmindedly reaching for the nightstand; the bassist lets out a moan that goes up in pitch as Alex continues to leave hickeys all over his exposed skin, the lingering smell of vodka and cherry coke becoming overwhelmingly entoxicing and-

The bedroom lights are flashing on before Alex is able to reach for the nightstand and for a moment that lasts far too long Reggie and Alex are frozen in place, holding their breaths in dread.

Reggie’s head snaps towards the door seeing his mother stare at them with an expression that’s stuck between unreadable fear and undeniable surprise.

“Mom,” Reggie breathed out in complete horror and suddenly the weight of Alex on top of him was almost suffocating. “Mom, it’s not-”

Everything moves too quickly from there. Alex can’t consider what is happening, his mind still stuck in a fog that stops any thoughts from properly forming. White noise rings in his ears, unable to make out what Reggie was trying to frantically say.

The only sound that makes it through Alex’s brain is the quick footsteps of Reggie’s mother who’s able to move across the room in a matter of seconds and swiftly strikes him across the face.

Reggie blinks, the harsh sound of the slap jolting him out of his panic and eyes dart towards Alex and away from his mother who is on the verge of tears as if she was the one hurt and Reggie processes the fact that she had hit Alex.

Alex’s face is turned down and away from him, looking to the side as blonde displaced hair covers his eyes and Reggie can see where his skin is already reddening in the shape of a wide palm.

Reggie is too afraid to move and doesn’t feel in control of himself, unable to bring himself to do or say anything; too shaken to reach out and comfort either of them. He isn’t even sure which he should comfort first, Alex he wants to say but can’t think clearly, brain filled with unshakable fear.

Worse of all his mom starts to frankly hit and smack Alex’s chest but having no real force to hurt him, too much of a nervous wreck to provide any strength in the blows. Yet still continues slapping closed fists against the drummer’s chest who takes a moment to process what was happening, hair still falling over his eyes and easily able to grab the women’s wrists to get her to stop her weak punches.

“Get off him! Get off of him now!” She wailed desperately trying to break away from his grip, struggling wildly and neither boy is able to think properly.

Reggie can’t even move past the fact that she had slapped Alex and somehow she looked scared..

“P- Please, before his father sees! Get off of him, I’m begging you, Alexander. He’ll be home soon.” Her voice cracks as she begins to sob and presses her forehead onto the blonde’s chest, shoulders falling slack and no longer fighting instead shaking violently in loud cries.

“You’ve ruined him.” She said in sudden a harsh breath.

Reggie’s heart drops into the pit of his chest. “Mom, no, he- he didn’t. I swear we didn’t- I- It’ll be okay.” Tears start to stream down his face and Reggie can’t stand the fact that he’s crying, watching his mother collapse onto the floor in a fit of broken sobs.

“I’m sorry.” Alex suddenly says and moves off of him before Reggie can realize that Alex had said anything at all. “I- I shouldn’t have come here.”

“Alex, no, wait,” Reggie reaches out for him but can’t bring himself to get too close. His chest tightens at the way Alex’s eyes gloss over with tears that won’t fall just yet, left cheek swollen from where she had hit him and just underneath his eye was darkening with a deep bruise from where Alex’s father had back handed him hours earlier.

Alex stands in the middle of the small room, shrinking into himself and biting his bottom lip anxiously and grips his balled up T-shirt so tightly the tip of his fingers turn white.

He stumbles over himself for a moment before staring sadly at Reggie. “I… I didn’t mean for this-”

“Just go,” Reggie’s mother interrupts in between strained breaths. “Please, Alexander, just- Before Manny gets here. You need to go. Get out!”

With a shaky exhale Alex runs out of the room, glancing at Reggie with fearful eyes that begin to water and the sight pulls the bassist out of his panicked daze and Reggie attempts to chase after him. Jumping out of the bed and his mother grabs him before he can get even a few feet away from the bed, stumbling to the floor next to her. His mother tightly holds onto him, nails painfully digging into his skin and he watches as Alex gets away, heart sinking in his chest.

Reggie’s entire body goes rigid as he stares where Alex had stood, the ghost feeling of where they been touching and the sensation of lingering kisses still fresh on his skin. He wonders desperately how it all went wrong so quickly.
