‘Ariadne!’
‘Huh?’ She turned around. It was too dark to see anything, but she could feel where he was.
‘I can’t find you, come on...’
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Ariadne…’ he was close to her now. ‘We’re in the forest. It’s dark, and dangerous.’ His purple eyes lit up.
‘So?’
‘Aren’t you afraid?’
‘Are you?’
‘Ariadne…’ she heard him sigh.
‘You don’t have to be worried.’ She reached out her hand, until she could touch his face. She let her hand rest on his cheek. ‘Yes. It’s you,’ she said, after a moment of silence.
She felt him lay his hand on hers. ‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes. No-one else is like this.’
‘I mean...’
Ariadne put a finger to his lips. ‘I am not afraid. I always liked the night. It’s when the truth was faced. During the day, everyone would lie, lie to look good to… I don’t know, no-one ever came behind our walls. Yet, during the night, they would speak the truth. All scandals came out. We could openly care about each other.’
‘You seem calm.’ He himself felt anything but calm. His heart was racing out of his chest, and he couldn’t tell why. Fear? Her closeness? Being nervous? A combination of all three?
‘I am.’ She let her arms slide around his waist.
He slowly laid his hands on her back. He was more than aware that she could probably feel his heart beating out of his chest right now, if she hadn’t before. She towered above him, too.
‘I love you.’
She pulled him closer. ‘I know,’ she answered, before pressing a kiss to his forehead. He laid his head in the creek of her neck.
She chuckled. ‘Maybe we should leave. The dark is making you nervous.’
He was quiet for a moment. ‘No,’ he muttered. He pressed a kiss into her neck. ‘I want to stay with you.’ He followed up his previous kiss with another one, then another one. ‘I can love you in the dark.’
