A Mouse in the City of Dreams

Summary:

Mickey Mouse and friends but set in the 1920's!
The characters are human (though you can picture them as they originally are, it would probably be funnier) and live like real people. A story I had thought up as a joke that became one of my favorite ideas.
It is highly inspired by games like Bendy and the ink machine, Cuphead, and of course Epic Mickey.
Though the main inspiration was Bendy and Boris: The quest for the Ink Machine, Great Gatsby, and Disney.
I highly recommend BABTQFTIM as two of the main character interactions happen because of that story. You will eventually see. If you have seen them you probably can guess which ones.

Notes:

So this is a story that takes place around 1918. The problem with that is all the things that happened in that time also are gonna happen here. Which includes some heavy topics. Such as racism, women's rights, homophobia, and things such as that.
If you're looking for a light hearted Mickey Mouse story, go read something else. This one isn't for you and may make you uncomfortable. This is meant to be a rather serious story and people will die in it sadly.
But if you are looking for this kind of story there will be funny moments and scenes where things will be fine for a bit. So please enjoy and if you'd like I have posted my designs for the characters that appear in this chapter on my tumblr.
https://squijis-art-hole.tumblr.com/
Also before I forget I need to explain some things.
In this fic + my art for it, Mickey's real name will be Michael instead of Mortimer. There's too many Mortimer's so the big cheese himself will just be Michael.
Minnie's last name has been changed to Souris since it's a little awkward that she and Mickey had the same last name. For all you who don't feel like using google, it's just Mouse in french.
To avoid any confusion Ferdie/Ferdiand is the twin that wears glasses while Morty/Mortimer is the one who has a bandaid or no bandaid.
Amelia is Ferdie and Morty's mother, Mickey's older sister, and Oswald's half sister. In the original comics Amelia and Felicity were just two names for the same character but I saw someone split them and i really liked it so i decided to do it too.
Felicity is Minnie's friend and is Albino.
Oswald instead of having 420 children, he has four.

Chapter 1: Minnie in the city

Chapter Text

Saltwater splashed the railing near Minnie’s hand.

A calm breeze flowed by and offered comfort to the small woman.

Minnie closed her eyes and smiled. It was going to be such a lovely day.

She began to hear the people gasp around her and mutter amongst themselves.

She peaked her eye open and gasped as she saw a beautiful giant green statue. Lady Liberty stared out at the water and held up her torch. In her other hand she held a tablet, all with a stoic expression on her metal visage. It signified a new start and a new life. She looked over at her friend Felicity and laughed, she would be ready for that life.

Minnie soon realized she was not ready for that life. After following Felicity off the boat she really just floated behind her wherever she went. When they went to go get their papers in order Minnie sighed.

As fun as it was going to be this was rather boring. She had never really gone places outside of home. Sure France was big but everything she ever wanted was there so she never really left. She had visited family in England once but she was a baby and only remembered bits and pieces of it.

It dawned on her how difficult this trip actually was going to be. Minnie hardly knew much english. So that meant she would have to stay around Felicity.

But Felicity had told her earlier that they were going to live with her friend and her two twin boys. Minnie wouldn’t doubt her friend but she talked about her other friend far too much. It was always something like “Amelia would love this,” or “Amelia once said.”

It was like she was obsessed with her. She talked about Amelia like how Minnie’s nieces talked about their crushes.

Speaking of Felicity she bumped into Minnie’s shoulder and gave her a soft reassuring smile.

“Est-ce que tu vas bien?” Are you alright, she had whispered to her.

Minnie nodded which satisfied Felicity.

She went back to talking to the men handling their bags.

Felicity was taller than Minnie which wasn’t a surprise, most were. She had beautiful white hair that originally drew her to Minnie. Her eyes were like rubies while her skin was warm and honey coloured. She had a skinny figure and always covered it in the most fashionable things.

Minnie gave herself some credit with that one. She had made the hat on her head and most of the jewelry she wore.

Felicity had moved to France temporarily for school. They had met there after they had realized they would be perfect models for each other's work. Minnie mainly made accessories and hats. While Felicity was one of the best fashion designers she had ever seen.

Felicity passed Minnie her suitcase and took her hand as they walked out.

She walked them to the money exchange and signaled for Minnie to give her her wallet. She did and looked at all the people going by. She noticed a phone and told Felicity what she was doing. She gave her some money for it but asked her not to get lost. New York was a very large city.

Minnie decided to call her mother and sighed when only the answering machine responded. She left a short message. All she really said was “I’m in America now, thank you for funding the trip, I love you, I’ll come back soon-” Though not that she even cared Minnie was gone. One less worry she had. Minnie decided she definitely should have called her dad. She leaned against the telephone and watched Felicity come over.

Felicity then made a call, most likely to Amelia. When she finished, she took Minnie’s hand and made light conversation as they walked.

After walking for a bit she signaled a cab and put their cases in the back once again.

When they sat down she straightened her hat as she gave the driver an address.

“So how are you feeling?” She asked Minnie in english.

“I’m just the rate,” Minnie replied. She did her best to cover her accent but realized it wasn’t working in the slightest.

“Min, you don’t need to lie to me. I know it’s rough going from place to place but it’ll get a hundred times better.” Despite how long Felicity had lived in France, she still had a thick Brooklyn accent. Well Minnie assumed, Felicity said she had a Brooklyn accent but she had been the only person Minnie had heard with that accent. She had decided to take her word for it.

“ ‘Melia said she was leaving to go help out at her brother's work for a bit so we get to go with her and the boys. Her brother’s friend is coming back in a few from the war and they need to set up his new place.”

“Ah, oui. Which brother is this one?” Minnie remembered that Amelia had two brothers. She really only knew much about one of them, mainly because Felicity really only liked to talk about Amelia.

“Mickey, he works at a nice lounge. A kind of dinner with a show place, ya know? Ozzy might be there too but he’s probably with Kitty and their kids tonight.”

Minnie caught about half of what she said.

Mickey? It was a cute name she admitted to herself.

Oswald though from what she had heard about him was the far more interesting brother.

He had been married before but left her with his four kids. She wasn’t a very good person to them. He then met a dark skinned woman and fell in love with her. She couldn’t have kids, but from what she hears they’re very happy together. Felicity liked to parrot what Amelia tells her.

“We’ll be there in a few, so tell me what you think of the city so far.” Felicity completely turned towards her and smiled.

Minnie looked past her out at all the buildings and people.

“It is… interesting to say the least. I really want to see more of it!” She quickly added so Felicity would think she’s enjoying herself.

“That’s good, that’s good.” Felicity said to herself.

“Oh who were you talking to on the phone? Your sister? Oh I bet you were talking to your dad, I hope you told him hello for me.”

Minnie hesitated before answering.

"C'était ma mère.” Felicity went silent.

Minnie’s mother was the one who funded the trip but she wasn’t exactly doing it from the kindness of her heart. Minnie wasn’t exactly her mother’s favorite child. Her sister Mandie thought she gave her mother everything she had wanted. A smart daughter who got herself a husband and had 5 kids, 5! Minnie didn’t stand a chance. She mostly funded the trip to get Minnie as far away from her as possible.

“I see… Oh we’re here.” Felicity practically slapped the money in the drivers hand. She grabbed their suitcases and Minnie.

“Ah- why are you going so fast?” Minnie questioned as she was practically shoved through the door of an apartment building.

“Because-” She grunted as she passed Minnie her suitcase

“I haven’t seen her in such a long time and I missed her so much!”

Minnie thought for a second.

“You came here last month!”

Felicity ran up the stairs and giggled like a child when they got to the door of what Minnie assumed was Amelia’s apartment.

She knocked on the door and smiled when a young boy opened the door.

He looked to be around 12 and had wire glasses propped on his nose. He smiled at Felicity and hugged her. She dropped her suitcase and lifted him into a spin hug. They laughed and she got tackled to the floor by a second boy. He looked identical to the first except he had a bandaid on his face in place of glasses. She embraced them then let go in an attempt to catch her breath.

“Boys! It’s been too long. How are you doing? Did you get the books I sent Ferdie?”

The boy with the glasses nodded and smiled. They moved to allow them all to sit up.

“Yeah! Mom was going to send a thank you letter but we told her just to do it in person”

“Ah but you know I love getting your letters. Oh! And Morty... how did you get that?”

She tilted the other kids chin to look at his bandaid. He stuck his tongue out at her and she mimed offence.

“I was messing with Ferdie and he pulled a foul.”

“I did not! You were just a sore loser!”

“That’s a lie, you fouled and when I called you out you threw a rock at me!”

“A rock? Ferdie that was most definitely a bad thing you did to him,” Felicity interjected.

“It wasn’t a rock!... It was a pebble,” he mumbled under his breath.

“Just because of that you are carrying Minnie and my stuff inside!”

Ferdie groaned and grabbed Felicity’s suitcase. He looked over at Minnie and stared for a good minute at her before gesturing at her case and taking it inside.

“Don’t mind the boys, they don’t care for new people.”

“That’s not true, we are great with new people. More people to mess with!” Morty giggled and ran inside after his brother.

Felicity leaned towards Minnie and hid her mouth as she whispered in her ear.

“Best lock your door at night.”

Before Minnie could question it Felicity was inside.

Minnie smiled and followed after.
