Gene needed him just as much, even if he didn’t realize it.
Because Gene was naive. And not just naive, but good. It made it easy to get into his condo, which worked to Nubsib’s advantage, but also worried him. If he could get into Gene’s home so easily, what could someone with a better sob story do? It irritated him, thinking of all the people that had most likely taken advantage of Gene in his absence.
You’re still too soft, Gene, Nubsib thought on the first night, when he caught Gene cleaning half asleep. The collar of his shirt was hanging askew and revealing his pale, delicate collarbone. They were completely alone, but Nubsib felt possessive.
Gene barely knew him but he was comfortable letting him see him vulnerable and exposed. It’s a good thing I came back now, Nubsib thought, when he woke Gene up. Gene was right to trust him. He wouldn’t let Gene be naive enough to trust another stranger.
