we've ridden the stars (seen everything from satarn to mars)

Summary:

He loved and he lost and loved again.

Notes:

title is from conan gray’s song astronomy

Work Text:

The thing about star-crossed lovers that is not spoken about is what happens when they happen to uncross. A love so passionate and bright that it feels as if it was a Sun. Suns are stars and stars die. Some stars simply burn out slowly, disappearing quietly, only to be noticed when looked for. Some stars explode, bringing everyone down with it.

Some will blame it on happenstance, some may look to astronomy for answers, but what’s done has been done. You can’t bring back the dead.

Henry knew, because he had tried. He loved and he lost and loved again. He shouldn’t have bet on forever, he should’ve wished on a shooting star.

Nothing is certain and everything can change in the blink of an eye, no scientist can explain every natural phenomenon. One moment there are nine planets and the next he was joining Pluto in the realm of the disgraced and forgotten.

He was a black hole that absorbed all the light and destroyed all that came close. He was disastrous. He may not have been fire, but he could burn things to ash just as easily. It was his fault anyway. He was the one who pushed the problems aside and neglected Alex’s needs until all blew up and backfired.

Maybe their signs clashed, or perhaps he subconsciously designed this, but he knew as he put distance between them, flying over the sea, that he would never be as happy as he was on New Year’s Eve and all the amazing moments following. He thought himself to be a self-sacrificing fool, but really an asshole who believed it was all too good to be true. And when Alex yelled and told him to leave, he didn’t fight back, he didn’t beg for them to try again. He took the memories he had and wore them with honor.

Life continued as the sun rose and set. As the moon went through its cycle. Henry found himself on the dark side of the moon wanting a glimpse of Alex’s eternal warmth. Wait for his chance of sunshine. He never thought he would be blessed enough with said chance, let alone graced with seeing him smile shyly as they approached each other once again unable to work against their shared gravity no longer. But here they were.

“I’ve missed you” and “I’m sorry” mixed the air between them as they tested the waters of what was allowed to be confessed. “Please forgive me,” and “I should have done better,” and “What do you want now,” and “Whatever you’ll have me for,” followed until their words created a galaxy of their own.

Alex, ever a force to be reckoned with, gave Henry a silencing glare, “Oh, shut up and kiss me.” Alex was already reaching for the front of Henry’s shirt. The universe finally realigned itself at last.

Sometimes stars fade, or maybe they weren’t star-crossed lovers after all. They were a supernova. All he had to do was fight.
