Chapter 1: Lighten Up

Chapter Text

The King and Queen’s argument could be heard through the heavy wooden door of their chamber.

“He just needs to get out there more, my dear. This will be good for him,” he said

“I know what my son needs!” She yelled, though it was muffled.

“No, this will be good for him, and good for our country.”

“You know things are tense between us and them. He could be assassinated or something! Not to mention the war!” The queen insisted.

“Which is on the other side of the continent! Their country is poor enough, they can’t afford another war. Which will be coming if he is put to any sort of harm,” He assured her, “Besides they love him over there. He goes every summer—If he doesn’t it would just be addressing the tension and quite possibly cause a war!”

“If he must go we’ll be sending a detail with him.”

“A detail? Come now dear, you know we can’t do that. There’s not enough guards for that right now.

“Then we’ll be sending the best. Our best guard- knight- I don’t know, I don’t care. Out son will be protected though.” The Queen said, adding a certain finality to her tone signaling the conversation was over.

Three days later Prince Whizzer was seated on horseback, riding through the streets of the kingdom and waving on his way in. People crowded outside shops and homes—all desperate to catch a glimpse of the beautiful and beloved Prince.

The palace guard, Marvin’s eyes glared through the crowd, searching for any threats. There were other soldiers accompanying them but Marvin was strictly on duty to protect Whizzer. He was to be with him at all times.

While this was indeed annoying at times, (especially seeing as he knew the guard to be an uptight and serious man who didn’t know how to smile,) the Prince could understand the reasoning. The country he was visiting was currently at war with a country quite close with his own, seeing as his grandmother had married in from there. So it could be dangerous for him to be around.

Whizzer quit his waving and glanced at Marvin. He was burning holes in the crowd with his eyes and he poked his shoulder, causing him to twitch to look at the prince. Who simply rolled his eyes, “Lighten up a bit, will you? This isn’t a prison sentence. We’re visitors, you’re a guest just as much as I am, you know.”

Marvin simply scoffed, “With all due respect, Your Highness, I think we’re both aware of the possible dangers of the situation. It’s perfectly natural for me to be alert.”

“Alert and paranoid are far from the same, sir,” Whizzer laughed.

The guard sighed at the prince’s immaturity. He couldn’t really expect much better though seeing as the prince was only nineteen. They say wisdom comes with age but with Marvin only being three years older and still able to comprehend the delicacy of the situation.

The young prince, however, didn’t seem to mind as he just continued waving and blowing kisses into the crowds.

They made their way into the castle and their horses were stabled. Whizzer and Marvin gave the King and Queen a bow.

Whizzer addressed them politely, “Your Majesties.”

Queen Augusta bowed her head respectfully, “Your highness,” She addressed him with the formal title, though they both knew Whizzer was basically a son in her eyes, “It’s been far too long, we’ve missed you.”

King Peter now addressed him, “Yes, much too long. Though our daughter tells us you two have been penning each other throughout the winter.”

“Oh yes, Princess Charlotte and I have been keeping in touch,” Whizzer informed.

“How lovely,” The Queen smiled, “Well, we have your chambers set up already. And our maid, Cordelia will show you to them.”

A bouncy blonde girl approached the two men, giving a quick courtesy, “If you’d just follow me sir’s.” She led them through the castle to the East Wing, showing them their rooms.

They walked in, the edging of the room lined with gold and the walls painted a porcelain white. Delicate artwork lined the raised ceiling and a grand bay window lit the room. Sage green curtains were draped around and two beds with white comforters were backed against the wall.

“I hope you two don’t mind sharing,” Cordelia smiled at them, “If you need anything just let me know. I’ll usually be in this wing.” She then walked out of the room leaving Marvin and Whizzer alone
