Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

Claire was sitting in the break room, using one hand to eat her sandwich and the other to hold the medical journal she was reading open. The door opened behind her, and she looked up to establish it was Morgan before returning to her reading.

“Claire, I was just looking for you!” She sat down across from the shorter doctor and crossed her hands in front of her. Claire shut her book and put her sandwich down on the wrapper, wiping her mouth with a napkin before speaking.

“What’s up?” She inquired, crumpling the napkin into a ball.

“Can I ask you a strange favor? I wouldn’t normally ask but I’m kind of in a bind.”

Claire’s eyebrows furrowed in concern and she tilted her head, nodding.

“Yeah, is everything okay?” Morgan didn’t answer Claire’s question, instead, she got straight to the point.

“So.. are you free this weekend? Just like Saturday and Sunday and well Monday morning? I know the hospital is closing for renovations for the week so you don't have work, but are you doing anything?” Claire’s eyes widened, partially at the amount of time she would supposedly be needed, and partially in amusement. Of course Morgan would give a reason that she should be free before she answered.

“Uhh yeah, I believe so.” Claire responded, more than a little intrigued now. “I mean, as long as you tell me what you need first.” Morgan cleared her throat before talking.

“Well, I possibly got myself into a bind by lying to my sister, and then having it come back and hit me in the face.” Claire raised her eyebrows, amused, still trying to piece together where she came in. Then Morgan continued.

“So long story short, I now have to go up to my parent’s house for a weekend and they are insisting on meeting my uh non-existent girlfriend and I CAN’T admit I was lying and I would NOT be asking you to do this otherwise but this is kind of my only choice. I also don’t really have any other options because I said your name when she asked.”

Claire almost choked on the sandwich she had picked back up to continue when Morgan said why she needed her. Her face reddened a little, especially at the last part. They sat there in silence for a minute, Claire contemplating it.

“Well?” Morgan asked, impatient for an answer, and also a little mortified.

“You know what, sure. I doubt they will believe it though…” She responded. Morgan’s face brightened.

“Oh my god, I did not think you would actually agree. Don’t worry about believability we can work that out during the car ride.” Claire chuckled a little, Morgan rarely expressed gratitude, then again, this was a pretty big favor.

“So, when are we leaving?” Claire asked, wondering what time tomorrow she had to be packed by.

“Depending on how long it takes to get out of here and grab your things, we can probably be headed there by like 6:30? Your shift just ended right?” Claire’s eyes widened again, shocked by how soon it was. Morgan, who could read Claire’s expressions pretty clearly, shrugged.

“You know what, yeah, I’m in, we can leave in 15 minutes.” Claire shook her head exasperatedly, letting it sink in that she was doing this. She stood from her chair, tossing the crumpled tin foil in the trash and heading towards the door before she turned around again, confused why Morgan was still sitting.

“Wow, you are actually agreeing to this.” The blond doctor said, staring up at her.

“What kind of St. Claire would I be if I said no to a friend, huh? Also happy you trust me enough to come out to me I suppose?” Claire responded, ignoring Morgan rolling her eyes at her. “Now come on, I’ve agreed to this, and no way am I arriving late and making a bad impression for my new fake girlfriend's parents.” Morgan grinned and stood, grabbed her white coat, and followed Claire out the door.

The two of them changed out of their scrubs in the locker room and before they knew it they were sitting in Morgan’s car, plugging in Claire’s address so she could pick up clothes.

“So what should I bring?” Claire asked as they stopped at a light on the way to her place.

“Clothes for tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday, and pajamas I guess? Probably whatever book you are reading, oh also I would recommend a bathing suit just in case.” Claire turned to her at the last sentence.

“I assume we are going to where you grew up… you had a POOL???” Morgan nodded, chuckling slightly. Claire sat back in her seat, staring straight forwards out the window, nodding appreciatively. They arrived at Claire’s a few minutes later and she stepped out of the car.

“You coming?” she asked as she walked around the car to the sidewalk. “Apparently, there is quite a lot I should pack.” Morgan saw the logic and put the car in park before following Claire into the apartment building.

They entered her apartment, and Claire dropped her bag on the ground next to the door and walked into what Morgan assumed was her room. She followed, looking around at where Claire lived as she went. A small smile spread across her face as she saw the picture of her, Shaun, Park, and Claire on Claire’s birthday. She walked over to it and held it up towards Claire.

“I mean you have a picture of me in your apartment, we’re practically married.” She teased.

“That’s the spirit!” Claire joked back, turning to grab her duffle bag from the closet to hide the blush spreading across her face. “We do have a lot to go over in the car though.”

“Agreed. Now, what do you need me to grab?” Morgan asked, trying to make herself useful.

“In the second drawer over there you can grab two pairs of jeans? Actually 2 pairs of blue jeans and one pair of black jeans.” The blond doctor nodded and walked over to grab them. Meanwhile, Claire threw two nice sweaters and a few decent T-shirts into the bag.

She always overpacked, this was no exception. Morgan refolded all of the stuff that was thrown in, earning an eye roll from the brunette.

Claire opened the closet where she hung stuff, pulling out two dresses and turning to Morgan. “Which one?” She asked, holding up a pink dress and a black one.

Morgan stared at the dark one for a second, mind flashing back to the last time she saw Claire wear it. Claire looked down at the dress and back up.

“On second thought, the black one kind of gives off funeral vibes now.” she hung it back up in the closet and put the pink one with the rest of her stuff.

“I’ll go fill up water bottles for the drive.” Morgan stated, heading towards the kitchen.

Claire finished packing, shoving probably way too many pairs of underwear into her bag and after a second grabbing a bathing suit top and bottom to add. She managed to fit a pair of heels and Birkenstocks into the duffle bag, along with her makeup bag. Once she zipped it she stood back, admiring her quick packing job when she heard a voice from the other room.

“Hey, Claire, where is your bathroom?” Morgan’s voice rang out from the kitchen.

Claire yelled back which door it was before deciding to change out of the clothes she had worn to work. She ended up slipping on one of her favorite pairs of jeans and a cozy sweater, swapping her current shoes for her boots. When she walked out of the room with her bag slung over her shoulder, Morgan was standing at the other side of the room looking at the photos on the walls.

“You ready?” Claire asked, picking up her other bag with her keys, phone, and book. Morgan nodded and walked out the door Claire was holding open, smiling her gratitude.

This was certainly going to be interesting.
