“Your sister seemed happy,” Eddie remarked, fingers intertwining with Jamie’s as they walked up the stairs to their apartment after Sunday dinner.
“Yeah,” Jamie nodded, reaching into his pants pocket with his free hand to fish out his keys. He released her hand for a moment to unlock the door, allowing her to walk into the apartment ahead of him and then following after her, closing and locking the door behind them. “She did.”
“You think you might find it in your heart to forgive Jack?” she questioned teasingly, crossing the room to curl up on the sofa. She shifted when he followed her, adjusting so that her arm was draped across him and her head rested comfortably over his heart, the steady thrum of his heartbeat soothing her.
Jamie huffed a laugh, one hand reaching up to tangle in her blonde locks. He carded his fingers languidly through her hair as he considered the question. “I think there are very few things I wouldn’t do to make my sister happy. If I have to tolerate my ex-brother-in-law being at the table every Sunday dinner from here on out, then I’ll make do.”
“Well, they’re already taking weekend trips out to Pennsylvania together,” Eddie pointed out with an amused smile. “And just to buy baked goods, on top of that.” She snuggled a little closer. “Pretty sure that means we’re stuck with him.”
“Well, they’re lying about taking weekend trips out to Pennsylvania together,” Jamie returned pointedly.
“Maybe they weren’t prepared to let everyone else in on it. Your family never knew we were dating, you know. They found out about us when you brought me in and introduced me as your fiancée.”
“Well, that was because…” Jamie hesitated, realizing her point. “It was because we wanted some time to ourselves,” he conceded, pulling her a little closer. He pressed a kiss to the side of her head. “They’re in a better place than they were when everything went wrong last time,” he mused. “Which is probably a good thing.”
“I’m sure it is.” She smiled against his shirt. “I’m sorry I lost it on you the other day,” she mumbled into the fabric. “About us getting divorced. I don’t think we will,” she added quickly. “After that conversation with Erin, I just…”
“Got scared,” Jamie filled in when she trailed off. His arms tightened around her. “I know. But we’re not heading down that path. We’re never heading down that path.”
She took it as the promise he meant it to be. “I know. You are very reassuring when you want to be.”
He laughed. “I have been told.”
“We should do date nights like that more often, though. They’re fun. I like getting dressed up with you.”
Jamie smiled against her hair. “I like that, too.”
“Hey, Jamie?” she muttered sleepily, eyes drifting shut.
“Yeah?” he muttered back.
“I love you,” she breathed.
He pressed his face against her hair. “I love you, too.”
With that, they slept.
