Eskimo Kisses

Summary:

Jungkook gets Taehyung to help him plan a surprise for his girlfriend.

Work Text:

Jungkook had been wracking his brain for weeks on how to make Y/n’s visit for Christmas special. She had been chosen to participate in a study abroad program for a full year, and she had just completed her first semester. She was due to fly in two days before Christmas and would be here for two full weeks; Jungkook had missed her so much that some days his chest physically ached with the need to just hold her in his arms, so he wanted to make it a Christmas neither of them would ever forget.

The snowstorm struck three days before Y/n was scheduled to arrive, and that made him a little bit antsy. Jungkook didn’t mind the snow as long as it didn’t delay her flight. He was so excited about her arrival that he couldn’t sleep, so Jungkook was sitting curled up by the window with hot cocoa watching the snowfall when he had the best idea. What if he built an igloo for them? He would definitely need help, but they could curl up inside the igloo and drink some cocoa and snuggle up together for a little bit. In his mind, it was the grand romantic gesture he’d been desperately trying to think up. If it continued to snow like it was now for the next 24 hours, there would be plenty of snow to build the igloo. Plus, he had some bamboo mats that were made to use on the beach that he could put down on the inside so their clothes wouldn’t be soaked by packed snow. He grabbed his phone and texted his best friend and next-door neighbor, Taehyung, to recruit some help for when the snow stopped falling. Taehyung showed up on his doorstep at an ungodly hour the next day with Starbucks and sausage rolls, and that’s the only reason that Jungkook let him in at 6 am on a Saturday morning.

“I know it’s early, Kook. But I’ve been thinking and searching YouTube and apparently you don’t have to have that special snow-brick making mold to build an igloo. We can use those loaf pans that Seokjin gave us for Christmas last year that we haven’t used for anything else,” Taehyung chattered on as they sipped their breakfast.

The rest of that day was spent studying multiple YouTube videos on how to construct a full-sized igloo and how to make sure it was structurally sound while snow continued to pepper down outside. By the time the snow stopped just after 7 pm that night, there was 20 inches of snow on the ground along with some drifts in their shared back yard as deep as 36 inches. They had developed a basic plan on how to execute the building of the igloo and decided to start early the next morning so that they would have plenty of time to get it ready with a little leeway for some failure. Y/n’s plane was due to land at 9 am the morning after. Taehyung would go pick her up from the airport, giving Jungkook time to make a beautiful breakfast for them to share inside the igloo.

Once they had figured out the best way to make the snow bricks, they were able to get going. It was going well, but since the loaf pans they were using were smaller than the bigger molds meant for making igloo bricks, it took twice as many bricks to make the same size space. While the igloo didn’t need to be as big as Taehyung had planned (the fool had looked up standard igloo size and gotten dimensions for igloos people used as houses), it did need to be big enough for he and Y/n to at least sit comfortably. After nearly nine hours of repeated making of snow bricks and meticulously stacking them together, they finally completed the igloo. It was big enough for them both to sit upright with space above their head and room for them to both stretch out inside. Since, Y/n was smaller than both men, it should be perfect. They were nearly frozen by the time they finished. After showering to warm up, they walked a couple of blocks to get giant steaming bowls of fresh ramen and some dumplings to finish thawing them out.

Jungkook could barely sleep that night. He was physically exhausted from construction of the igloo, but he couldn’t wait to wrap Y/n in his arms. He looked at the clock nearly every thirty minutes, so at 5 am, he just gave up on sleeping. He made a cup of coffee and plotted the breakfast he’d make for Y/n as he sipped it. After finishing his coffee, he started cutting up some fresh watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, and cherries, then washed some blueberries to mix in with them too. Once that was finished, he sliced some thick slices of a gorgeous brioche loaf he’d bought from a local bakery yesterday evening on their way back from dinner. He had planned to make a French toast recipe that had homemade blueberry syrup. The French toast itself would be quick to make, but the syrup took a little longer. Once the syrup was made, Jungkook showered quickly before glancing at his phone. It was 8:45 am at this point, and he had a text from Taehyung letting him know he was at the airport waiting. Jungkook finished drying his hair and carefully dressing before heading outside to ready the interior of the igloo. He spread out the bamboo mats on the inside of the igloo, then stacked some cushions for them to sit on and some warm blankets to wrap up in. He and Taehyung had hung some fairy lights around the igloo the night before, so he turned them on. They twinkled nicely under the gloomy grey sky that was threatening to drop more snow on them.

Once he received a text from Taehyung that he and Y/n were leaving the airport, he quickly made the French toast and plated it alongside the sliced fruit from earlier. He had placed the syrup he’d made into a squirt bottle and made a giant carafe of coffee. He put it all on a tray and carried it out to the igloo just in time for Taehyung to pull up with Y/n out front. Jungkook rushed out of the igloo and met them at the front door.

“How was your flight, Baby?” Jungkook asked as he wrapped her in a tight hug.

“Too long. But I’m so glad to be here. I’ve missed you,” she replied, kissing him softly.

Taehyung giggled at them, slipping past them to put Y/n’s luggage in Jungkook’s bedroom. “I’ll leave you two lovebirds to it. Call me later and we’ll go have dinner together while you’re here, Y/n.”

They said goodbye to Tae and Y/n started to remove her jacket.

“Before you do that, Baby, I need you to go out into the back yard. I have a surprise for you.”

Y/n just looked at him for a moment before she headed out the back door. Jungkook was right behind her and heard the gasp that tumbled from her lips when she saw the igloo.
“How did you do this, Kookie?” she murmured as she turned to face him.

“Tae and I worked on it all day yesterday after it finally stopped snowing. Why don’t you go inside? There’s a surprise waiting on you.”

Y/n hesitantly approached the entrance of the igloo and crawled inside. Jungkook crawled in right after her, and smiled softly when she sat down on one of the cushions and looked around in awe at the sparkling of the snow ceiling from the small lantern in the middle of the tray, the beautiful breakfast tray with a single rose in a glass, the carafe on the side with 2 coffee mugs, and the blankets.

“You did all of this for me?” she whispered as tears leaked out of her wide eyes.

“Yes, Y/n. I wanted to surprise you with something a little over the top so that I could give you this.”

Jungkook held out a small black velvet box to her. Y/n reached out with shaking hands to accept the box and open the lid to find a simple, yet elegant diamond ring inside.

“I know we are both young and you still have a year and a half of college left. This last semester away from you has taught me that I don’t want to be away from you anymore once this year is finished. Will you marry me?”

Y/n looked from Jungkook to the ring and then back to Jungkook before frantically nodding yes as tears spilled down her cheeks freely from joy. She sat the ring box on the tray then pulled Jungkook to her to kiss him deeply, whispering affirmations and I-love-yous between kisses against his lips. When they finally separated, Jungkook gently wiped her tears away with a blinding smile.

“Let’s eat breakfast before it gets too much colder,” Jungkook giggled as he slid the ring on her finger.

They ate breakfast and sipped coffee while talking happily and laughing together. They were both a little giddy from a lack of sleep, so after breakfast was gone they decided to have a nap. Once they had climbed out of the igloo, they stood looking fondly at it before looking at each other. Jungkook leaned down and rubbed his nose gently against Y/n’s with closed eyes and a full heart. As much work as it had been to build the igloo, it had been worth it; it was a perfect analogy for their relationship while Y/n had been away, and it had built a gorgeous foundation for the rest of their lives. Jungkook took her hand and they went inside to sleep so happy and looking forward to the future.
