The Fated Layover

Summary:

Y/n's flight home for Christmas gets delayed.

Work Text:

Y/n was flying home for Christmas and had a three-hour layover. It normally wouldn’t have been a problem, but it was snowing when the plane landed, and it hadn’t slowed down since then. It wasn’t looking good for being able to fly out anytime soon. When the announcement was made that the flight had been cancelled, Y/n immediately went to the service desk nearest the gate she was set to leave from to discuss some options. Since it was later in the evening, there aren’t many people around anymore, but she walked up to the desk at the same time as a tall gentleman. Initially, she paid him little attention as she spoke with the lady at the counter. The airport was next door to a hotel and had a special deal with them for times such as this; all Y/n had to do was provide them with the voucher given by the airline and they would assign her a room and they would provide alerts as to the status of the flight. Y/n was exhausted and planned to take their generous offer, so she gathered her luggage and started walking in the direction of the exit.

“Excuse me? Miss?” A surprisingly deep voice called out from behind her. “I’m sorry, but you dropped your gloves behind as you were leaving the service desk.”

“Thank you so much.”

“Are you heading to the hotel next door?” he asked.

“Yes. I didn’t fancy spending the night in the airport since I don’t think any flights will be heading out tonight. Are you?”

“Yeah. My name is Namjoon, by the way. Would you like to walk over together?”

“I’m Y/n. It’s lovely to meet you.”

They walked the short distance to the hotel chatting a bit along the way. Upon arriving, they checked in separately with their vouchers but found that their rooms were on the same floor. They took the elevator together, still chatting. When they arrived up to the floor, it turned out their rooms were only two rooms apart.

“Hey, Y/n? After we settle in a bit, would you like to have dinner together downstairs?” Namjoon asked hesitantly, standing halfway in the door to his room.

“That would be amazing. Why don’t we meet in front of the elevator in a few minutes?”

When they went down to dinner in the hotel restaurant, the awkwardness wore off in no time. By the time they finished their meals, they were laughing and chatting as if they’d known each other for years. They had nearly finished an entire bottle of wine, and Y/n felt a little bit giddy with the wine, the laughter, and the way Namjoon’s entire face lit up when he laughed with her. By the time they finally headed upstairs to their rooms, they had figured out that they were actually on the same flight heading back to Seoul for Christmas.

Standing in front of her door, they were both stalling a little bit. Neither wanted their night to end, but they knew it had to.

“I don’t want this night to end. I know we met just by chance but meeting you has made this layover a million times better,” Namjoon spoke softly.

“I don’t either. At least we can text each other now.”

“That’s true. Can I…hug you? I know that’s weird of me to ask, but I just felt like—”

Y/n cut him off by wrapping her arms around him and snuggling in for just a moment before he responded with a hug. They said their goodbyes for the night, and Y/n fell in bed thinking of Namjoon and how well they had hit it off.

The next morning, Y/n rushed off to the airport, excited to get home to her family. Thankfully, the snow had stopped overnight, and the sun was out and shining beautifully. Y/n boarded the plan and tucked her carryon bag away and settled into her window seat before she heard his beautiful tinkling laughter.

“We just can’t seem to stop meeting, can we?” Namjoon laughed.

Y/n’s head snapped up to look at him before he plopped down in the seat right beside her. She laughed so hard when she saw Namjoon beside her.

“Ah, Joon. The fates were determined that we should meet.”

“I’m glad they were. I’ve been thinking about you all night.
