The Epic Poem

Summary:

Sebastian shares a poem he writes with Chris for the first time.

Notes:

Occurring in May 2021 Sebastian has his Tommy Lee look and Chris is rocking the close shaved beard and fluffy hair.

Work Text:

“Chris! I finished it! I finished it!” Sebastian skids to a stop in the kitchen. Chris looks up from where he’s petting Dodger in an opposite chair while eating a sandwich with big blue eyes that crinkle on the corners and Sebastian forgets what he’s talking about for a moment.

“You did?! Well come on! Let me read it!”

Sebastian’s been working on an epic poem about a little boy who migrates from Romania to America for almost a year now and the last time Chris checked he was almost done and swapping a few lines here and there because he was so critical of himself. Chris hadn’t gotten to read the entire thing yet but he was excited to since Sebastian had promised the moment he was done Chris could read it. Months and and years of thought had gone into this poem and Sebastian already had a few publishing houses interested in it. With his own big blue opal  eyes boring into Chris’s Sebastian hands over his trusty leather bound journal that he’d had since he was 14 to Chris. Chris takes it with reverence and opens it going back to sit down in his chair.

Sebastian stands there like a child and Chris looks up at him after a moment realizing he’s standing there. He lets out a chuckle filled with mirth it doesn’t feel like he’s laughing at him, but it makes Sebastian feel odd all the same. Chris stands up again and goes to wrap his tattooed husband up into a hug.

“Babe, it’s gonna take me a little while to read this why don’t you go get yourself some lunch, I know you’re supposed to be skinny for this role but it worries me, I promise you’ll know as soon as I’m done and you have nothing to be self conscious about anyway, everything you do is amazing,” he kisses Sebastian on the nose, making his whole face scrunch up adorably before going in for a peck on his dreadfully soul patch adorned mouth.

“Okay...” Sebastian agrees quietly and goes to nervously make himself some chicken salad.

It’s about an hour later when Chris peaks into their study to find Sebastian spinning around in the chair and twirling a drumstick mindlessly between his talented fingers. It stirs something in Chris but he knows now isn’t the time to get distracted.

“Babe?” Sebastian immediately stands stock still and straight up out of the chair. His face an expression of terror and fear and it worries Chris so much, he wishes Sebastian had more confidence in himself. Even if he wasn’t his husband Chris would have thought the writing was amazing. Sebastian was so talented at so many things but this poem was a true masterpiece. There were so many intricacies to it and Chris felt he learned so much that he didn’t know, and that said something because he thought he knew everything about Sebastian he’d heard countless stories and tidbits over the years but this was a linear telling through time and while it was only 40 pages it was worthy of a novel.

He tried to give off the most calming and reassuring air he could as he held up the journal and gave it one pronounced shake,

“This, this is amazing,” Sebastian’s eyes seemed to widen even more as Chris got closer, “You are so talented, and I’m not just saying that. I’d be thinking the same if I was a non-bias reader. But honey, you’ve done so well with this. It’s really been worth the time you’ve put in, those snippets you showed me were just minuscule compared to reading it all. I really don’t think I’ve properly been able to grasp the story and emotions of an outsider coming to America until now, and this is even more brilliant because you’ve managed to write it from a child’s perspective. And it can be easy to lose the innocence of a child’s narrative when using large words and having lengthy descriptions  but you’ve done it stupendously. This is going to make a difference in so many peoples perspectives. I’m so proud of you,”

Sebastian seemed to finally start breathing again as he moved forward to take the journal back. “Really?” He asked. He looked down and bit his lip still not quite believing it. He felt his face flushing hot from all the praise but honestly, he was proud of himself too.

“Really, I swear, I’m so proud of you. I think you should share it with your mom once you type it up, huh? What do you say?” Chris was wrapping him up again and Sebastian was taking advantage of his small size right now and burying himself into Chris’s hold.

“Okay. I will,” Chris kissed the top of his head. Giving him and extra squeeze as he said,

“I’m so damn proud of you, really, you amaze me more and more with your talents each day,” Sebastian let out a content hum, feeling more confident in himself now that he was in Chris’s arms.

“You’re not bad yourself,” he told him, and looked up for a kiss.
