"I know what you are"

Summary:

Maya and Phoenix make a bet. Phoenix loses. Maya makes him recite a very specific scene to Edgeworth in his office.

Notes:

Sorry to say this might be the funniest ironic thing I've written in a while I had the quote set out for reference like I was a historian scholar writing an analysis.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Phoenix had Maya to blame for what was about to happen. Actually, he had Larry to blame. Larry and his stupid fleeting romances. When Larry came in weeks ago saying he found a new girlfriend who he was going to be with forever, Maya asked if Phoenix wanted to make a bet for how long it would last.

He said one week, Maya had said two. Phoenix was pretty confident in his chances, and was prepared to not have to pay for any burgers for a month.  And yet there Larry’s relationship was, passing one week and going two weeks strong before fizzling out.

Maya had cheered more that day than when she was declared not guilty for murder, which said a lot. It had taken a little while to find a good time to fulfill her reward for the bet, but here he was now.

Phoenix raised his hand to knock on the office door, clutching the paper. He had almost been hoping Edgeworth wasn’t in so he didn’t have to do this. Unfortunately, his secretary sent him right up.

After a noise of confirmation, Phoenix walked in.

“Hey Edgeworth…”

Edgeworth was sitting at his desk, papers in neat piles.

“Wright. To what do I owe the pleasure?” He put his pen down and sat up straighter.

“Yeah actually..um..”

“I don’t have all day.” Edgeworth raised an eyebrow.

“Ok..well…” It was now or never. “You’re impossibly fast, and strong.”

Edgeworth’s face turned from amused yet professional to confused very quickly.

“Are you unwell, Wright?”

“Your skin is pale white and ice cold.”

He started scowling, “what exactly is this?”

Phoenix continued despite the interruption, determined to finish this and get out of there.

“Your eyes change color, and sometimes you speak like you’re from a different time.”

The speaking part was true, and Edgeworth made a noise of indignation. Phoenix thought that line was what made Maya think of doing this in the first place.

Phoenix glanced down at the paper briefly.

“You never eat or drink anything. You don’t go out in the sunlight.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“How old are you?”

Edgeworth sighed. “Twenty-six”

“How long have you been twenty-six?”

“Get out of my office.”
