    I hear his voice before I see him; and it steals my breath away. Then he steps out from behind the corner ahead, his face suspended between joy and relief. Seconds pass as I take him in, struggling to comprehend that he isn’t one of the dreams I’ve had. No. He’s real. And he’s looking at me. I walk towards him slowly, my boots crunching in the snow.

    “Nick?” I say, pausing in front of him.

    He tips his head, as if he expected me to do something else.

    “Yeah. It's me.”
