Love blooms, love kills

Summary:

Komaru Naegi is just a normal highschool girl. Toko Fukawa is a loner that no one likes. One day they meet, a seed is planted and love begins to bloom. But who said love can't kill?

Basically a Toko/Komaru hanahaki fic with some other things mixed in because boy do I love headcanons.

Also, wow, me? Writing a longer story and not just a dumb one shot??? Impossible :p

Notes:

Heyo peeps :D It's me, the infamous Potato. This time I actually have a proper fic idea and not a one shot I thought up at 1am lol. I might write more of those but for now I'm trying to focus on this!

First of, this is my first long, multi-chapter so my upload schedule is all over the place, so please don't expect too much haha. I'm also like writing this as I go, so I really don't have a plan lol and tags will probably be added a lot. Second, I'm going to be writing a bit about DID, since Toko and Sho have it, and I have done my research, but if anything feels off or I wrote something wrong, don't hesitate to tell me! I'm all ears! And well every other body part...

Lastly, enjoy! :>

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: A normal girl’s boring week

Chapter Text

Komaru Naegi was a normal, average, common highschool girl. Or well, that’s what everyone always told her. Heck, that’s what she started telling herself after all the years of hearing it.

She didn’t really have any defining or interesting characteristics, the only thing was the bit of brown hair that always seemed to stick up no matter how much she combed or flattened it. Also, apparently she had really pretty green eyes, or so her closest friend Chieko had said, but she wasn’t sure if she was just trying to be nice or if she actually meant it.

Komaru wasn’t exceptionally good at anything either, the best she could think of was that she read and loved manga more than probably any normal human does. But all she got for saying that was being called a ‘hardcore otaku’, which honestly, she couldn’t deny even if she wanted to. Her grades were average, neither too bad nor too exceptional, her physical fitness was average, she could run as fast as anyone else. Basically, she was average in almost every aspect. And in all honesty? Komaru wasn’t a big fan.

This week had been a very boring week for her, they had been given a lot of homework over the course of it, one of her favourite manga releases had been pushed back due to some complications and it had rained from Monday all the way to Thursday morning. The only thing saving it from being a downright bad week was that Chieko and herself had a sleepover from Thursday to Friday to do some homework, though little was actually done by Thursday evening.

They had just finished a particularly difficult maths assignment, and Komaru was about ready to fall over from boredom.

“Ughhhh Checko,” Komaru whined, flopping down on the bed as dramatically as she could. Chieko giggled next to her, and patted the distressed girl on the back, tucking her finished work into a school bag. “Today has just been so boring!” Chieko nodded.

“Yeah, there will always be those slow and boring days. But cheer up Ko! I bet something interesting will happen soon,” she said, trying her best to hype up her best friend who seemed to be on the edge of going to sleep out of boredom. “Makoto’s coming back from school for the weekend like he normally does right? Catching up will be fun won’t it? I bet he has some more interesting stories from the Ultimates there, like the one about when that biker dude and that coach guy getting into a pool noodle fight over chicken strips.”

At that Komaru perked up. Ah right, how could she forget her older brother Makoto Naegi, he was the most accomplished in the family after all, try as he might deny it. He had been accepted into Hope’s Peak Academy about a couple months or so ago, which was probably one of, if not the best, schools in the whole world. She knew many people who would kill, figuratively she hoped, to even have a slim chance of being enrolled there, that’s how good of a school it was. Only people with ultimate talents actually got to enroll there, and her brother had gotten in by luck through a lottery, giving him the title of the Ultimate Lucky Student, though he said that his luck felt like it was on the unluckier side of things. She might sound sad or salty, but she was actually really happy for her brother, and hoped that he was faring well in the new and probably intimidating school life.

Makoto lived at Hope’s Peak sometimes during the week, since they had dormitories there, normally when he had many exams or events where it’s more convenient to be in school. On the weekends after he stayed he would always try to come home and catch up with everyone. When this happened, Komaru would meet him on Friday afternoon at the school gates, then walk home together like they did before he had entered Hope’s Peak. It was a sense of familiarity that Komaru welcomed in the changing world she lived in. She hummed at the thought.

“Yeah, you’re right. I just... feel like he’s got more important things than catching up with his little sis, ya know?” she mumbled, fidgeting with the green friendship bracelet she had made for Chieko and herself a year or so ago that only has ‘Komaru’ on it and a couple different shades of green beads. “It feels like one day he’ll just decide to not come back.” Komaru sighed. These thoughts weren’t uncommon for her really. Apart from Chieko, Makoto was the only other person Komaru really hung out with, and was the person who she gushed to the most about new manga, since Chieko didn’t read them. I mean, who would want to hang out with a boring girl like her, where all she does is talk about manga and food? If she were him, she would definitely want to stay away.

“Hey,” Chieko said, placing a hand over her fidgeting one. A blue friendship bracelet identical in design to Komaru’s slid down her hand when she did, but instead of ‘Komaru’ it read ‘Chieko’ and had different shades of blue. “Makoto isn’t like that you know, he’s a kind guy, no way would he do that, so no self deprecating or being mean to yourself, alright? Plus, I bet he has equal amounts of fun as you do when you hang out, from what he tells me at least.” She smiled at her, intertwining one of their hands’s fingers and giving it a light squeeze, and Komaru couldn’t help but smile back.

“Thanks Checko, that was really kind of you,” Komaru said, sitting up cross legged to look at her.

“Ah, it’s no problem for the bestest friend in the world!” she beamed, waving her free hand around in the air. “You know that I’m staying here until Friday right, so I promise I’ll keep you company.” Komaru smiled at that, Chieko really was the best friend she could ever imagine.

“I’m glad I’m friends with you Chieko.”

“You too Komaru, you’re the best friend ever.” Komaru booped her nose with her free hand, grinning much wider now that she was cheered up.

“No, you are the best friend ever!” Chieko booped her back, and it turned into an all out war, with both friends giggling as they poked each other and competed in a battle to see who could show the other was a better friend. Before all too long, Komaru’s mum yelled at them from down stairs to go get some fresh air and entertain the dog, who had taken to trying to eat that night’s dinner off the counter.

Negative thoughts completely forgotten now, both of them raced down and out of the house, running around and playing with a very happy Hugo, the Naegi household's Bernese Mountain Dog. At one point, Chekio had been taken down by him after trying (and failing) to stealthily steal his toy ball, and was helpless and giggling on the grass under the big dog as Komaru yelled ‘DOG PILE!’ and promptly jumped on top of both of them.

Maybe boring days aren’t so bad, Komaru thought fondly as Chieko laughed and yelled that Hugo was drooling on her, the dog in question seemed only to drool more at that.
